Shoveled a little snow today!

Today, my wife and I -- fearing the collapse of the flat roof (pictured above) over our family room -- decided to shovel the snow off said roof.

The roof is approximately 630 square feet, and the snow was at least 2.5 feet deep, on average -- probably closer to 3 feet, on average. This picture was taken through a window in a door going out on to the roof. Against the door, the depth of the snow was five feet.

That means we shoveled 1,575-1,890 cubic feet of snow, which averages 20 pounds per cubic foot.

We shoveled 31,500-37,800 pounds of snow! That's 15.75 -18.9 tons!

Don't those of you who don't live in New England really wish you did live here? >:)

I fortunately live on this hill that got quite windy blowing most snow off my roof. Unfortunately, even with the winds, there is probably still close to 18" worth but no ice damn at all thanks to the energy program blowing 1000sqft of insulation into my attic this past year.

My neighbor has a widowmaker that stretches from his gutter all the way to the ground close to a foot thick at the top. 16' long...crazy.

Mowed the lawn (moss) again today. Before you judge, I don't live is So Cali or Florida. This is Washington. Drove over the mountains to get my daughter from college for the weekend. The ski lifts were still with dirt and grass underneath. Very weird, if we don't get some snow in the hills they will be putting water restrictions on this summer....

For better or worse my neighbors, like my wife and I, are all of an age at which their children are out on their own -- with one exception, where the kids are in the early grades of elementary school.

This year the "plow guys," who also do the shoveling for their clients, are so topped-out that they are having trouble even keeping up with plowing drive ways. Then they have to come back between storms and move the snow to make room for the next deluge.

I use a 60" snowblower on a John Deere 35hp tractor to clear my drive way. The advantage of this method -- v. plowing -- is that the snow gets blown 20' or so off to the sides, rather than piled up along the sides and at the ends. Even with that advantage, however, the snow is piling up, as you can see below.

The worst part, from my time in New England - will be the thaw - unfortunately probably lots of flooded basements and failed sump pumps. We had that happen the first year we lived there. I always try to elevate my basement equipment at least an inch for that reason - saves you from the "casual" flood!

You're right about the effects of the thaw.

In past years I've had to attach a pump to the rear PTO on my tractor and connect a "puddle sucker" to pump water out of the "pond" that appears in our side yard when the snow melts. The hydrological pressure from this water forces water up into our basement between the foundation and the slab -- while the sump stays dry!

We have perforated drains around the foundation, but these don't solve the problem when the soil is so saturated that the water has nowhere to go.

This spring, I'm expecting the worst! :(

We relocated to New Hampshire from Palo Alto, CA, because I wanted four seasons, and winter in particular.

This year we're getting a little too much winter, but it is a beauty, even if, as Yeats wrote, it is a "terrible beauty."

And, spring arrives in about a month!

Yeah, I'm in PA and between the snow (not nearly as much as New England) and the sub-zero temps, I've about had it with winter! It is pretty, but having lived in PA my whole life, I'm content with winter just for the holidays... then give me summer!

    Fresh snow is pretty though!

Here comes our biggest problem yet. This Sunday might hit temps above 30s, close to 40s that produce freezing rain, or straight rain. I will be clearing my roof between now and then.

Moose your weight assumption probably isn't far from the truth. We have moved some snow this year, that's for sure.

New Hampshire's state Fire Marshall published a "paper" on when to start worrying about the snow load on your roof, including some ways to estimate the weight of the snow per unit volume. The 20# per square foot number came from this source.

He said 20#/sq ft was for snow on the heavier side. Ours had been sitting compacting under its own weight for days -- some for weeks -- and as we got near the bottom, heat escaping through the room underneath had caused some melting, greater compacting, and even ice formation.

I could have cut it to use for bricks to build an igloo! At that point I was sure it was heavier than 20#/sq ft.

I have to agree with Ken. I live on the east side of the Cascade Mountains in WA. The spring weather this early is tempting me mow lawn soon. I'll take this weather anytime as I do get tired of the cold but I really havent experienced cold weather like the Midwest. My brother would tell me that he would have to count down 3,2,1, and then run to the house as it is frigid cold.

I just noticed in my post above that I talked about the weight per square foot.

Of course, I meant per cubic foot.

    Sorry for the mistake.

In any case, the stuff was heavy and cold!

We seem to have gotten off easy tonight -- so far only a couple of inches.

nikonik, we sure could use some early spring weather in New England, but who knows what the big meltdown will bring this year. I'm sure it will be more than the usual "mud time" -- probably more like "flood time."

    OK, I'll stop whining! :)

Hopefully we'll get a slow thaw, not a leapfrog from winter to summer like we've had a few times in the past decade. We're on high ground, but my buddy lives right next to the Connecticut River. If we get a fast thaw, the river will definitely reach flood stage very quickly, and a lot of homes will be under water.
