As I said earlier, I hope this pushes Sony, and all others, to release all forms of a movie on the same day. Theater. Check. Streaming. Check. Blueray. Check. DVD. Check.

Why ? Unless you want movie theaters to go out of business and the Sony's of the world to lose more money.

I doubt they will go out of business, or lose money. I suspect there are many people such as myself who do not go to the theater, and wait for the DVD. Going to the movies is a social experience, and I doubt if many people will stop doing that just because you can buy the DVD.

  • Still love the theaters for certain flicks! So no....theaters wont tank. and personally could care less what Sony does! They pretty much just showed the public what they are made of with the whole bluff and play/ I think if was a ploy to generate more business!!!

Well lets see if that would hold true. Releasing a movie on all media at the same time means I could order it on demand for 6 bucks. 6 bucks for a whole family to view as opposed to 10-15 bucks a person at the movie theatre plus eats. I think that savings alone would be enough for most families to avoid going to a movie theatre. Even if only half of the people decided to not go, that's more than enough to close the majority of movie houses. Loss of jobs, loss of revenue for your town from taxes. That gap in time between a movie release and when it's available on other media is there to protect profits.

I don't consider going to the movies a social experience. Being social is the last thing I want to do while watching a movie. You may not go to the movies for whatever reason, but millions do. Your premise is to sacrifice what millions are accustomed to for the satisfaction of a few who don't go to movies and are impatient for DVD releases.

Yet still even as is, today going to a movie for a family of 5 can get costly especially since other economics has tightened budgets. If that's the case, then wait for a dvd release, no movie is worth the "I have to see it now" mentality. Plenty of other ways to entertain yourself 'till then.

  • Tony makes a lot of sense in that last post, but still the thrill of the big screen, especially imax, is a treat well worth the 12-15 bucks a head. Not something I;d waste it on with The Inrerview. but there are the "just gotta see" flicks that deserve the imax experience. I just said to the wife, imax or stay home!!

Movie theaters, and cable companies for that matter, are a nearly dead business model, and they know it. That is why things like Atmos, D-motion, restaurants instead of snack counters and IMAX are gaining a foothold. The last theater we were in had recliners made of the finest Corinthian leather. Of course, it cost them about 1/3rd of the seats that were in the auditorium.

Cable companies became internet providers for a reason as well. As things shift to a streaming "on-demand" environment, cable and satellite become un-needed luxuries most can live without.

Theaters will still exist of course, for the big flicks like "Star Wars 21, Attack of the Ewoks", but they will be the large format IMAX type theaters with all the amenities. Everything else will first stream to the home, available for instant purchase or a one-time pay-per-view.

Discs of all types will also be gone soon enough. The streaming world gives content providers the ability to control their copyrighted material with far more protections than a physical medium can. It also costs them NOTHING to produce, package and distribute. The only things still available on disc will be pressed on vinyl.

That may be the way some wish it to work John, but I highly doubt it will happen like that. Everything will hash out their own niche in the industry and co-exist with each other. Much like audio does today.

If I learned one thing in all my years, it's that big companies will not simply accept lower profit margins. Part of that comes with marketing at every stage of a movie release to drive sales/viewing. A movie gets hyped up for it's initial theatre release, then again for the dvd release, and yet again for cable.

This is to hit all segments of the market, those that can't wait and will pay anything to see it asap, those that want to own physical media, and those who can only afford the 6 bucks to have the whole family watch it on cable.

Streaming first run movies offers other challenges too, such as security. Given Sony's recent problems, hacking is a real problem and could drive a whole underground movie business.....which equates to lost profits.

@nooshinjohn‌ where did you hear of this "Star Wars 21: Attack of the Ewoks" and where can I get the lowdown???
  • The underground movie business is alive and well. My son on deployment had access to movies well before they ever hit the theaters. It was a common thing for him to review a new release and tell me weeks prior to release what was hit or miss. I always chuckled a bit how they looked the other way about those type of things for those serving abroad.

I'm a little curious at the final box office numbers for The Interview. I'd bet the take will be low, not simply because of the limited release. I have a feeling that the per screen number will be less than lackluster as well.

It is only showing in 331 small theaters, but they are sold out. Interestingly, theaters have only generated about $2.8 million, of which Sony only gets a cut. On the other hand, online sales have generated $15 million so far, of which Sony gets the most.

331 theatres compared to millions of computers....eh, not really a fair comparison. If one was to look at the sole benefit of Sony, then your point is taken.

If however one was to look at the bigger picture if that trend continued, you'd find loss of jobs in theatres, loss of jobs in marketing, people who make the posters, concessions, lost tax revenue which means yours would then go up.

So we should make that sacrifice for the benefit of Sony and those who want it all now ?

LOL. Sacrifice? What sacrifice? The sacrifice that a movie isn't showing in 3000 theaters at the same time?

First time I have heard somebody arguing for socialism in movie theaters. LMAO.

Ok, just because this is on Netflix now and I have Netflix I started streaming it. Didn't think I would be able to watch the whole thing and my wife hates these kind of movies. Well she laughed pretty much through the whole movie but kept saying, "this is stupid". I think she was just trying to cover up that she was enjoying the movie.
