Is their anything special about the design of the speaker modules that sit on top of an existing speaker & fire up? I wonder if one could use an ordinary speaker laying down & firing in the up position?

I just went to a Atmos Demo and it's pretty cool. They used 4 in ceiling speakers to recreate the effect. In your room I'd do the same.
I'm sure you'll have to upgrade your Yamaha to a Atmos unit if your considering going this route.
I have yet to see the top mount firing up speakers , I'm not fond of that idea as I'm sure it looks goofy.Dan

You made me curious so I went to check some out and found that Def Tech has a A60 for the top of a BP-8060ST. It actually looks really good.
When that series came out, I was very tempted to switch to the BP-8080ST's which sound incredible especially for the asking price.
I also really dig the center channel as it's powered and even matches the Mythos series I currently have. I find no fault with my Mythos 10 center channel but always wanted to do a shootout between the 2 in my system. I may revisit that idea and if i decide to go Atmos , I may consider the BP line. Hopefully they release a A80 to go with the BP-8080ST's and then that might push me over the edge.
Pioneer has the SC-89 out and I've considered upgrading anyway.Dan

I recommend an article to anyone considering an Atmos upgrade. It's in the September 2015 issue of Sound & Vision magazine. You may be able to view on web. Article is called "Atmos vs Atmos" and it explains in detail ceiling Atmos speakers vs what they called "enabled Atmos" speakers which describe speakers that sit on top of an existing speaker. I thought of simply getting an old pair of Polk 10 and pointed them into the room "angled." Atmos enabled speakers must angle into the room, not simply aiming straight up. It also discusses using 1 or 2 Pair of Atmos speakers in a setup. There is a lot to absorb, I read the article 3 times. When planning the upgrade do a lot of research, but most of all be patient. I bet there is a lot of speaker makers including Polk that will have Atmos speakers come out soon. Also consider the upgrade needed for new AV receivers. Consider Denon or Marantz, I will also consider a 9.2 channel receiver. Giving me a traditional 5.1 system, with an additional 2 set of Atmos channels for front and back. Lot's to think about. For now i'm going to lay low in the weeds before I make my next move!

Make sure you pop by the Polk and Definitive booths at CEDIA. There will be ATMOS set ups in both. Definitive with the 8060s and A60 modules and Polk will be LSi's with in ceiling height channels, so you can hear both styles of ATMOS installs back to back.
Come by for a listen... be warned though, last year there was an ATMOS listening room for Definitive and it had a long line!
FYI, that is some exclusive forum info! -

The story goes back a few LSAF's ago when several of us TX polkies were riding the hotel elevator along with the pizza delivery guy bringing us late night pizza and Skip leaks one with no other warning than a s-hit eatin' grin. I thought the glass was going to melt.

C'mon Phil.... You dont already have Atmos installed?
Because 11 speakers isnt nearly enough. It MUST BE 11.4.4"....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -

Too Funny !!!!!! Not yet, there's other stuff coming out also. I like to let things settle down for a while to see what's gonna stick...if any of them. Besides my Yammy 3010 doesn't have Atmos capabilities. Not a bad idea though of adding 2 more Velo's!!!

For whatever it's worth, I've picked the brain of some designers of Atmos speakers, they claim that the difference is directivity, said that if you just get a normal speaker and fire it up, you'll have nothing but immediately localizable speakers. Part of how they achieve this is by cutting certain frequencies, based on research by Dolby to figure out how our brains interpret things. Other literature vaguely explains this same thing so I have no reason to doubt it. They also seem to act like the design of some of the recessed ones help with this effect and this is kind of hard to get right.
But, they won't say what exactly they're doing in the background. Apparently these Dolby specs are an industry secret and manufacturers don't want it to get out. Two engineers over at Klipsch say this is the most involved and complicated project they've been a part of in a long time. -

Mainly because Klipsch engineers get confused easily. :-)
Definitive was a launch partner and the A60 program was very smooth. It mainly has to do with the physics of bouncing the sound off the ceiling.
You can go with straight in ceilings and you won't need anything ATMOS specific. You can check out this set up at the Polk booth at CEDIA.
