Sending very large files

I have a 30GB file I need to send to someone, via email or a link. I've heard of DropBox but don't know if that will work, anyone have any suggestions?

Can you zip it? I don't think the free version of dropbox will let you store 30Gb.. you'd have to go to pro and commit to prob 15 bucks a month... try winzip but whoever you are sending it to will also have to be able to receive a big file... easy to put it on a thumb drive and ship to him

I have the option of mailing as a last resort, was hoping for something quicker. I don't think this will compress much with a zip but will look at it.

anything over 2gb chunks is hard to send without an FTP site. Best bet is to flash drive it and snail mail. If you have Cox or Road Runner you could split it into small 4gb files and use the cloud.

Create a dir, make it a private share, put the file there, and let the recipient map to it, and copy the file. Of course, that requires a lot of configuring, but it should work. Google should be able to help.

I"m not trying to share the file on my network, looking for a service that will allow me to SEND the file to someone else, kinda like a giant email attachment.

Thanks guys, I'm aware of the existence of a service called the mail that would allow me to physically send the file :-)

I was hoping there would be a service that would work for me.

I meant share it over the Internet, not share it on your home network. It's doable, but I don't know how to configure the router to allow your computer to be seen by the other person.

Also, I think you can use the Bit Torrant software and distribute it that way, or some other file sharing software like original Napster.

However, is there a file size attachment limitation with Yahoo mail, or Gmail. I know our work email is limited, but that is because IT set the upper limit. Technically, any size should work.

WinRAR and WinZip will allow you to compress and split the file into smaller parts, called a file set. The smaller files can be emailed. Once all the files are received, they can be extracted/decompressed using WinRAR or WinZip. WinRAR can handle Zip, but not sure if WinZip will handle RAR files.

Not a bad idea if the file was a lot smaller. They say 10MB is max size for e-mail, I never been able to send anything larger than 5 MB, also because e-mails are mine encoded they end up being about %33 larger. At 30 GB not very practical, that could be more than 300+ e-mails.

At 30 GB I think upload/download service could take hours, if it's not copyrighted stuff.

I think a 32GB USB Flash Drive would be you best bet there cheap and just mail it.

You could also split it with WinRAR into 4GB files, and burn them to DVD, then send the DVDs

it might have been mentioned already, but have you considered UPS/Fedex'ing your computer to the person? just a thought...

seriously though, the bittorrent idea is pretty good. and/or, also the regular file sharing over the internet, set your firewall to allow only this person's IP, though, and fwd the port to your host computer. then have the guy grab Free Download Manager and start pulling the file over. it supports resuming in case of dropped connections. you might also try incorporating the WinRAR option, but choose store/no compression, just to break it up in to more manageable pieces.

google drive is only 1.99 a month for 100 gb, and you can share with anyone. Cheapest option by far. This is what I use for the classes that I team teach. We share everything from video files to large powerpoints with embedded video etc. Should work fine. You can sign up and cancel if you do not want to keep it.

HA. just realized that this is over a month old. You could have rode a mule and gotten it there by now ;-)
