Must say I'm pleasantly surprised at how they sound. They've never been gone into, no mods or anything. Appear to be stock with the exception of the home made IC. I was expecting to be disappointed in the soundstage, bass etc., but those puppies really sing.

The soundstage is on par with my modded 2.3TL's, even with less than ideal placement 4' from the wall. I played several hours of music with them set up between the 2.3TL's, about 4-5' apart. Used the IC provided with them, but not my dreadnaught. The SL2000's are a bit gritty at times, and the mid range could be smoother. The bass was decent, even with this placement. They seemed to love power and had a real punch to them.

I pulled all the MW's to see what they are and they're period correct: 6510 and 6511 in each cabinet. Did notice that one of the 6511's has a 1/4" tear in the surround which may have happened during transport as one of them fell onto it's face. It didn't seem to affect the sound. Plan to repair it to use as a back up and order another from Polk.

Looking forward to the changes the mods will bring.

Get busy! You will be so amazed by what those things sound like once you get the mods going. Think they sound good now? You ain't heard nothing yet!
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

The mods are gonna cost more than the speakers!

Just ordered the RC-0198's and MW6511. And of course the tranny for the Dreadnaught. Still need to get Gimpod's boards, inductors, caps, resistors, etc.

Yep, yours and Larry's are my road maps. Won't do the veneering though as the finish on these is OK - real wood veneer even.

This is very encouraging. I am considering a possible purchase of a pair of CRS+'s for a smaller room in the house. I'm too late to add an additional 1KVA Dreadnaught to the current group buy. But if I do purchase these CRS+'s, I will consider the A-L 800VA solution, which in and of itself, is a descent way to go from what I've read.

The 800VA tranny is no slouch. I had that before I upgraded to the 1000VA and the biggest difference was going from an IC connected between the speakers to the 800. Going to the 1000 brought further improvement, but not quite as dramatic.

Although it's acceptable to use a lower grade Metalized Polypropylene in the Lo-Pass Section, best practice is to use the same grade/type in the Hi and Lo-Pass. Solen, Dayton, Clarity PX MP Caps are fine in the Lo-Pass, but those with trained or hyper-sensitive hearing, may notice the difference.

It's going to be a lot less than what I paid. The big ticket items for me were the Solen inductors, the Dueland resistors, and the Sonicaps for the shunts.

For a pair of CRS+'s, the Dynamat Extreme Wedge pack is more than plenty, think it was about $30 or so. The caps you can just price out on Soniccraft, pay attention to when they run their 20% sales. As far as I know Larry's rings aren't even available. The Neutrik stuff will be cheap. A sheet Blackhole 5 will be $80 at Soniccraft. As for what else.... Have a think about Tony's boards, a way to mount Tony's boards, and inductors. Rewiring with something like Cardas Litz helps too.

I buy the Dynamat Wedge Pack off eBay for $25.00 shipped. Check Soniccraft for sales on Sonicaps and Mills Resistors. You can buy smaller sections of BH5, Soniccraft only sells full sheets. Google is you friend. If Larry is going to do another run of his rings, then wait, otherwise Hurricane Nuts are an excellent alternative. H-Nuts and Neutrik SpeakOns you can get from Parts Express.

The real expense with the upgrading theses comes with the big Solen inductors in the SDA circuit and the A-L 1000VA tranny + parts.

The Erse SuperQ Laminated Steel Inductors are excellent for the sub-base drive circuit.

Yes, and considerably cheaper than the Solen air-core, and easier to get and easier to mount. The Solen definitely beats the Erse, but the Erse is a huge improvement over the stock inductor due to the lower DCR. The difference between the stock and the Erse will make you feel like you added a subwoofer to your hi-fi. I used the Erse in a pair of 2B's, which is the identical crossover to the CRS+, and the results were great. I used the Erse in my 1C's also, now owned by crispybrown.

I agree with you that they are not stocked items as they don't even have them listed anywhere on the parts express website, but they are "in stock". They currently have some on hand at their stateside warehouse/distribution center for immediate shipment. Those three inductors are usually special order, they just happen to have a supply of the 0.4mH 22GA ones available. The point of contact for this matter is:

    Beverly Ruggiero
Parts Express Team Leader/Special Order Rep
    800-338-0531 x179

She will be available again after 10am EST tomorrow to place an order.

Interesting. I know Parts Express used to carry the 22 gauge, so they must be leftover stock. The other two can be made using the next size up and unwinding them with an LCR Meter.
