The communication skills in our society are really, uh, Neanderthal? Okay, how about lazy?!
I'm in court about 10 years ago to fight a traffic ticket (won), and I hear a mid 20 kid talking to his lawyer in the corridor about missing his last court date due to a massive cold.......only after every other word, this kid keeps saying "gnome sane" and finally he says, "I had snot coming out of both my noses". I couldn't help myself, I turned and looked at him inquisitively, he asked me, "What are you looking at?" What's the teacher's union got to do with anything?
Private schools, pulic schools, what's the difference?
If the system and the parents don't demand higher standards,
this is what you get. From what I've seen, most kids work just hard
enough at school to get by. Parents that set higher standards
have better educated kids. Schools setting standards higher may or may not
have any effect."The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." --Thomas Jefferson -
I'm afraid that education is a FAR more complicated issue involving a LONG history of cuts, discrimination, social stratification, and good and bad teachers as well as parents, lack of employment and the ghettoization of certain groups. Unions can be a bad thing or a good thing, depends on how much you hate giving some job security to a low paying profession that often does not attract the best and brightest (those guys are off trying to crash the markets, or brainstorm on the next "derivative" scam).
It's "so easy" to put up a picture like this and rag on a few lazy teachers and "tenure" and oh, how evil that is, how bad our students are when the problems go so FAR beyond those teachers and reach into every area of our economy, business practices, and Gov't.
I'll leave it at that. Except to say that one need not abolish job security in order to institute some laws and provisions to eject bad teachers. Nor is the Private Sector for "profit only" option going to solve the problem of poverty and disenfanchisement in this country either. Serious discussions are not of the knee jerk variety.
I have a great sympathy for teachers in the public system, so maligned, so underpaid, so trashed, and disrespected and yet "trusted" to provide the educational foundation that undergirds society itself. Sure there are some morons and freeloaders, but those guys also exist at the level of CEOs and Wall Street. We will always have those who live to scam the system in Gov't and in BUSINESS! In fact there as as many in the corporate world as in other sectors of society but there is NO protest against them!
Now back to our regular programming.

That's interesting. The article begins by telling us "this is one of the worst and poorest areas of Chicago" (mostly black) and then magically JUMPS to a discussion about teacher salaries without telling us who the teachers who end up in that area are? And why they are THERE, with the poorest of the poor? We don't need to ask such questions because they might make us think.
The logic is that the teachers make too much and do nothing. In other words ONLY TEACHERS are responsible for the fact that these kids probably come from broken families that make nothing, have little hope for a good future, and are probably riddled with crime and drugs. So let's see, teachers are GODS who can circumvent all that in an hour or two a day in a classroom in a subpar school with far fewer facilities than what the kids in the AFFLUENT suburbs have? Right?
Oh well.

Points are well taken CNH, and just for the record I did not bash any teachers. Just a general "public education sucks" theme is all. You are right though, many reasons as to why that happens, but we can only control those things that we can, bad parenting you'll never overcome.
We've had this discussion before....many times. Throwing money at the problem doesn't work, nor does having a bureaucracy thousands of miles away dictating standards, procedures, tests, or quotas. School districts need to have the power to weed out bad teachers without a fight from unions, and good teachers need to have the handcuffs taken off.
Given the pic I posted, would you say these kids are ready for college ? If you answer yes to that question, then obviously your bar is set below ground. If you answer no....then you just admitted to roughly 60k per student for 4 years of H.S. was just thrown out the window.HT SYSTEM-

Maybe its an inside joke...just sayin'...or maybe a printing error?
naw...must be those public schools. -
There is actually a simple solution to this problem. But no one wants to talk about it? FORCE corporations and businesses to settle in such areas and transform the economic landscape into one of hope and opportunity. You don't even have to address education first. I say "force" because REGARDLESS of how business friendly you might be: you can throw all the rules and regulations and taxes out the window for an area and business will STILL NOT COME THERE! That's the reality.
And the rest will follow. Crime and drugs will fall off because business wants a safe, stable environment. Jobs will be available. Families will make more. Kids can get part time jobs. New facilities for recreation and consumption will rise up. Property values will rise. A greater tax base will be available for those SCHOOLS. The schools will be refurbished, better equipped, cleaner, safer and a BETTER environment for the POOR kids, like they are for the affluent boys and girls.
But you and I know that the Captains of industry don't really care about the "poor"! And would rather sell everything off like Detroit.
But society is about "people" and people are responsible to each other, need each other, need to provide an environment that benefits growth. You don't plant corn in sand and expect it to grow. But that's what most people who lament our situation argue. You have to cut some of YOUR PROFITS in order for society to prosper. And when society prospers your profits will return. Do a little for the future, or at least think PAST a QUARTER or TWO of GROWTH and margins!
It's about teachers, unions, Gov't, taxes! No it's NOT! It's about what we VALUE, and not simply what is MOST PROFITABLE to US personally!
Compassionate Conservatism! That used to be a phrase. What happened to it? Well, we know who prospered and who didn't.

Have to disagree with ya there pal. I'm not too ready to force anyone to do anything. Let me ask you this....why is it business's that must be forced to move into poor area's ? The poor can't move to where the jobs are ? What about personal responsibility ?
Seems to me, my immigrant relatives came here with less than 20 bucks in their pockets. I would classify that as poor, no ? Yet they went to cities where the jobs were, granted we had a lot of jobs available then. Business exists to make money, not be a social counselor. Business will go where markets and money dictate...where climates are friendly to them.
It is up to the individual to go where the jobs are, not wait for a job to come to them. Is anyone asking where the jobs are ? Nope....they only ask now what they can get for free. Ambition has been cleansed from the American culture.
Ever hear the phrase...." I can only show you the door, it's up to you to walk threw it." ? Conservatism is about creating opportunity, whether or not people capitalize on those opportunities is up to them. That requires some work though, hence the rejection of conservatism by many young folks.HT SYSTEM-

How about we raise some money for fares so we can send our "poor" to China and India where our job creators are working wonders? How would that be? Because I don't see any of those "wonderful" Corporations willfully moving into poor black areas in the U.S.
Poor black areas, what a "difficult" concept this is for business lovers! It's more complex than Particle Physics, I suppose. Class, Race, Poverty, Unemployment? None of that is "relevant" here is it? Even though we have a loooonnnnnggggg legacy of all that.
I wonder why? lol

Your fundamentally failing to ask the proper questions pal. If the jobs are moving to China and India, then ask why an address that issue....except nobody does. We have a reactionary policy making process instead of simply dealing with problems head on.
WE do btw have companies that move into rural area's to create jobs, you just never hear about them because that won't fit the narrative. Porsche being one who moved their company HQ from Chicago to the sticks of Atlanta. As a further example, Walmart wanted to open 4 stores in Chicago, but they were turned away because of the wage requirements placed on them by the city.
Plus you have to take into consideration the amount of freebies handed out can range between 30-40k a year worth, who wants to work for 9 bucks an hour when you don't have to ? Your also eluding to bigotry as a source of evils in this, and that maybe so to a certain extent, but what lies in the hearts and minds of men is up to them to overcome. Some will never overcome their prejudices, no law will change that.
It's easy to cast business as the Darth Vader of everything that's wrong in society, some rightfully so too, but that's too broad a brush for a complex problem that nobody has the will to address or solve. If I had 30 million to invest in a business, I'm going to where people can afford to buy my products....otherwise I will lose that investment. Makes sense ?
If your so set on investments into poor neighborhoods, how much of your money is invested there ? I'd be willing to bet zero, likely because you don't want to lose what you worked hard to acquire. Business is no different.
Since you are a teacher and I imagine a study of human history, you then know that our species is very transient. We get up and move to better ourselves...better climate, better farming grounds, better security, better schools, better jobs, etc. Since when has it been acceptable to park your butt in one spot and wait for everything to come to you ? Imagine if the first humans stayed in Africa, never ventured out for better, never migrated to the unknown. By making freebies so prevalent you create a mindset that you don't need to venture out, don't need to step outside your comfort zone, don't need to better yourself to survive. Just wait beside your mailbox, that check comes like clockwork and you'll vote for anyone who increases that check or benefits.
When you put government aside, pretend it isn't even there, and take responsibility for your own and visualize a lifestyle you want for yourself, then your motivated to make it happen. The society we are creating takes away that ambition, that need to do better. We will always have those that need to be taken care of, no doubt, but not able bodied people. You simply can't lay blame at the feet of corporations for all of societies ill's, as you yourself has proclaimed a much more complicated scenario.HT SYSTEM-

Nobody here has ever made a typo? Must be nice to be perfect.
On a semi-related note, teacher tenure was recently ruled unconstitutional in California. It appears the worst of the teachers were ending up in the poorer school districts since it was so difficult to fire them. Good or bad? I don't know, but it is time for a change in the school system. The curriculum is fine, but the delivery system and facilities need upgrading.
