I have too much bass!!!

Hello and Goodevening,

I am having a problem and am needing help. I have attached 2 photos of my apartment to use as discription of the problem. I have extreme amounts of reflected bass coming from my diningroom and have no idea how to control or handle the situation. I had one idea of putting up a curtain to divide the room but was unsure if the bass would pass through it. All the bass is coming from the 2 front speakers, there is no Sub. I thought about maybe corner bass traps but its such a long distance I didn't know if it would do any good.

If anyone has any suggestions I would be super greatfull.

Welcome to the world of bass modes, and standing waves, Nasanieru!! There is no one easy answer for this. The word is.... experiment. Change things. Move things around (furniture, speakers, etc.) Every change you make will have an effect to some degree. Sometimes adding a sub or two can smooth modes out. Getting the bass frequencies right is a challenge usually. When all else fails you could try something like a Dspeaker Anti-Mode.

Thank you for the advise, it is much appreciated. I guess what I was more curious about is if anyone thought that a curtain could work as a trap or if I am needing to stick with original methods of trapping bass.

Try moving the speakers away from the wall maybe? Even a few inches may have some effect in addition to other methods.

Not knowing much about your speakers I think your idea of a curtain is not a good one for bunch of reasons. If it was a frat house situation and needed a room than yes. you generally do not want to limit your sq footage, that's what your paying for and then like said before try to switch things up location wise. Maybe a poofy couch and carpet might help and doing any adjustments your gear allows. If your set up is fairly new than you should not have carpet indentations if you have them so shake up things up and try all different variations, your talking about only 2 speakers. If those speakers have ports I know of people who plug them to lessen their bass output.

First off thanks for all the suggestions...

I have 2 RTi8 speakers, and have moved them away from the wall. I have a Yamaha RX-V663 Receiver and want to used the Pure Direct button to play the music off of my computer. I have in the computer a Creative X-Fi sound card connected by Toslink cable to receiver. All the music I have on the computer is Lossless or Apple Lossless...I have tried putting one of the larger pillows I own in one of the corners by the door and noticed with just that a minimal stoppage of bass waves. I can't really move things around to fix it that way...

So I will probably invest or build my own tube traps. Was thinking of taking one of the concrete post tubes about 10" around and 8' tall, cutting some openings in it, my wife said she would sow sleeves to go all the way around them with ends on top and bottom, then fill them with polystyrene or mineral fiber or something that would stop the sound. Making the fabric tight enough that the insulation doesn't spill out. If it works I will post pictures...

Unless, anyone has any other ideas. I am open to suggestions!!

Shoot, forgot to say in the last post I have made my own twisted 8ga speaker wire, and the speakers are being Bi-amped.

If it was me, I would try to build my own corner bass traps, or buy them. ATS or GIK make them, and they can even make em look pretty. You get to pick your fabric, etc.
They also sell the fabric to cover ones you make yourself....

I am VERY certain there are some threads out there that show you how to build your own corner traps at a lower cost as well. The main thing is to find the "right" insulation/absorption material for the frequencies your trying to use.

Stupid question but is your equalizer/environment on your Creative X-Fi sound card off or set to a flat frequency response? Just throwing it out there :-)
