Who'd a thunk it....Bennie Goodman-"Swing into Spring" great vinyl comp of 40--50's Goodman. Interesting to note the title track recorded in '58 has Doc Severinson on it, kinda cool trivia.

It's been far too long since I visited the blues triangle at Lincoln and Halstead in Chicago. I hope James is still kickin' out the blues at one of the great clubs in the area.

The only time i was in chicago a coupla years back it was 19 below and not a single medium to big name was playing in town. I'd love to go back though catch some blues at Buddy's place and hit this great Italian Restaurant (can't remember the name at the moment) a few blocks from the motel I was staying in. Great place to visit.

When you're in Chicago, forget the big names. Take a cab to Lincoln and Halstead and catch the local talent at Kingston Mines, Lilly's, and Chicago B.L.U.E.S. (all within a block of each other - well, I hope they're still there.) Great players, like Hip Linkchain and Dion Payton, can be found there regularly.

    Luther Allison-Live In Chicago Alligator-4869 c1999

Perhaps one of the most overlooked Chicago blues players around. He played with & grew up around (teenage years) many of the great Chicago blues players like; Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Freddie King, Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy, and Otis Rush. What he did so successfully is take his base of Chicago blues and add touches of rock, soul, reggae, funk, and jazz.

Well into his mid-50s, Allison continued to delight club and festival audiences around the world with his lengthy, sweat-drenched, high-energy shows, complete with dazzling guitar playing and inspired, soulful vocals. He continued to tour and record until July of 1997, when he was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. Just over a month later, he died in a hospital in Madison, WI.

Live In Chicago is pulled from performances at the Chicago Blues Festival, Buddy Guy's Legends club with a couple of strays recorded in Lincoln, NE, that were too good not to include, this two-disc set captures Allison at the absolute peak of his powers. Disc one is the Chicago Blues Festival in its entirety with a bonus track of Luther jamming on the finale with Otis Rush and Eddie C. Campbell on a medley of two B.B. King tunes. Disc two is equally potent, a combination of performances pulled from Buddy Guy's Legends club and the Zoo Bar in Lincoln, NE. Luther simply played his heart and spirit out right to the end and these recordings spotlight it in a very fine manner. One of the label's best.

This is desert island cd for me. Simply a must have for blues fans.

    Jimi Hendrix-Live at Clark University
    Dagger records

This is a release from from Dagger records which is an official label of Experience Hendrix, LLC. They release official bootlegs which have been hand picked and approved by the Hendrix estate. This is one such recording.

Recorded 3-15-68, Atwood Hall in Worcester, Massachusetts. A great recording very alive and dynamic, and an equally impressive short performance. This is about the time the Experience is at their peak. Mitchell is amazing. This performance sounds so fresh, like they were actually enjoying themselves. Some of the later Hendrix shows can sound a bit uninspired. Hendrix is on fire here.

Van the man - "Poetic Champions Compose" on absolutely mint vinyl. This is definitely a toss up between formats as far as sound goes.

Last night I was listening to

Yello-Stella Electronica at it's quirky best. Great production

    c500340q5uv.jpg

Yello began a flirtation with a mutant form of Brazilian and Latin music, incorporating their trademark otherworldliness and staunch rhythms on STELLA, but the interstellar samba is in full force on ONE SECOND. "La Habanera" is five minutes of Sun Ra meets Jaoa Gilberto in the rainforest jamming to Kraftwerk, while "Moon in Ice" is an atmospheric ballad of sorts, that predates electronica's new millennial obsession with frenzied Latin American grooves, taking Esquivel to new galactic heights. "The Rhythm Divine" finds Mssrs. Meier and Blank in torch-song mode; think Shirley Bassey backed by Martians. ONE SECOND is easily Yello's most accessible record, a good entree into their particularly warped universe. And for an extra kick, they include their synth-funk staple "Oh Yeah," in case you missed it the first time around.

And one that i've always seemed to overlook Rickie Lee Jones- "S/T" listening to it on vinyl tonight (and paying attention).
Get past the overplayed (for those that remember) "Chuck E's in love" this chick is more than that. Think Dr. John mixed with early springsteen ( the good stuff) in a weird kinda way, extremely well polished production too boot.

    B.B. King-Blues on the Bayou

One of his later albums that has some killer playing, back to basics

B.B. King made his debut as producer with Blues on the Bayou, released in October 1998. He employs the most basic of ideas for this project: record an album of B.B. King tunes, with B.B. King's regular road band, under B.B. King's supervision. Keeping it loose, relaxed, and focused, King cut this album in four days down at a secluded studio in Louisiana and came up with one of his strongest, modern-day albums in many years. No duets, no special guests, just King and his road warrior band, playing his songs with him producing the results -- no overdubs, just simple, no-nonsense blues done like he would do them on-stage. The result is a no-frills, straight-ahead session that shows that King might be have been 73 at the time of this date, but he still had plenty of gas left in the tank. Tracks like "I'll Survive," and the jumping "Shake It Up and Go," "Darlin' What Happened," the minor keyed "Blues Boy Tune," the instrumental "Blues We Like," and the closing "If That's It I Quit" show him stretching out in a way he has seldom done in a studio environment, and the result is one of his best albums in recent memory.
