Cookin' Together - Red Holloway with the Brother Jack McDuff Quartet
    1964 (Prestige - 7325)

Super tenor sax and B3 vibe throughout, by Red and Jack respectively. George Benson showing his finesse as a sideman long before he became "known" in the jazz world.

I dug this out of the duffle bag of cassette media I've had for years (as in "decades") - very enjoyable!

    Dave,

How are you cleaning your vinyl finds? I have the DiscWasher brush (actually a couple of them), D3 fluid, and a Zerostat gun, but can't honestly say I'm pleased with the results.

Currently using an Allsop Orbitrac on the moderately grimy finds. Followed by a spin or two with the discwasher brush then carbon fibre brush.
I'm shooting for a vac based set up after checking Troy's out (Simple all manual but effective. He's cleaned several of my favorites and i'm impressed and believe that a vacuum based cleaner is well worth the investment.)

Next up (vinyl of course) "Let it bleed" - The Stones

Vac's are the only way to go...

I've had a Nitty Gritty for years and love it... Some say the VPI's are even better.

For "dust" Watt's Disc Preeners are great (I can get one to you, if you like) and the trusty Watt's "Dust Bug" is always on my TT's (also available)... :D

Yup, if you are serious about vinyl, a vacuum cleaner is a MUST have.

    Today's selections are:

Jamming With Edward (LP, Dave, I found a minty copy in Maine so I've got one for you)

Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony by the Cleveland Orchestra on a Telarc LP (picked up in Maine still sealed for a hefty sum of .50 cents)

Been listening to some vinyl today between some of the games.

The Doors - Morrison Hotel..I had forgotten how much I like this LP and how good it sounds. The Doors were one of my very favorite bands!

Led Zep - Self titled first LP. Sonically not as good as Morrison Hotel but a lot of fun to listen to with a lot of great tunes!

Someone posted a while back that they had played Johnny Rivers Realization LP so since I have that I put it on also, it's a very good LP. It's been raining all day here in So Cal and Summer Rain sounded so good!

I don't do a lot of listening to LP's anymore but every now and then I like to break out some vinyl and slip into the "way back machine."

And, I'm afraid, it will just be the tip of the jolly green iceberg.

Hmmm... serious? When I moved here in '97, I had a grand total of two (2) CDs which received very limited play, and about 1,000 LPs. It didn't take long to balance out that equation (and get lazy in the process.) :p

    Let's see:

    Vacuum record cleaner - $500
New TT, TA, and cartridge - $500-$1000
New phono stage (inevitable) - $500-$1000
Assorted goodies and tweaks - $300-$500

    OUCH! :D

Let's hope... first two items on the list will be headed East when Kevin & the Upscale Crew return from CES.

Now listening to Otis Taylor - Below the Fold. On "the best albums you never heard in 2005" list at NPR. If you like psychedlic banjo blues (and who doesn't?!), original songwriting (neocons beware), and solid vocals -- this may be for you.

Very original artist. He's been getting a lot of play on NPR and XM with "Government Lied". Do a Google on him. He walked away from music for two decades for artistic differences with producers.

More mountain than bluegrass with the banjo, no jazz leanings like Fleck. Also a respectable guitarist. Good stuff!

Are you sure it's not just U2...j/k :) . I like some of U2's older stuff was actually listening to Actung Baby earlier, and yes most of the 1/2 time show sonics leave a lot to be desired.

    B. B. King - Live In Cook County Jail
    4-Track Stereo Reel-to-Reel

Thanks to Dave James for this masterpiece! I've had this album on vinyl for decades. The SQ of this tape blows the vinyl release away and is the absolute best reel I've run through this deck.

When you listen to Riley B's vocals from this point in his carreer, it's easy to see what his legendary status was built on. As my wife said "It has real passion!" Many of his signature guitar licks here have a vitality, attack, and sense of immediacy that those who became fans later in his career might just be shocked by. The jam he builds from "The Thrill Is Gone" is a prime example. If you've not heard this version, you've really never "heard" this song, IMO.

    Way cool, Dave!

Absolutely! BB'S "second best" album (by only the slightest of margins to "Live at the Regal") and a must have masterpiece IMO.
