Perhaps inductance is playing a role here. Unlike Mills or MOX, the L-Pad contains a spiral wound, resistive wire, AKA an inductor.
There may be some minute frequency shaping going on.

thats the problem... its only good if its only the highs...if its for highs and mids you can't do it...

I've only seen conversations with 2 way speakers...i may be wrong but i think it messes with impedance if its a 3 way...

i have seen RS III(original 1981 version), RSb, and Studio Monitor threads where people felt they were successful by replacing the pots with resistors. To each their own.
Maybe I will experiment with just one or the other driver with a resistor. I only have about 30 of them laying here.

yeah give it a shot...are the high and mid circuit completely on their own...?

yup. there were at least two crossover circuits used in the RSb. I currently have this one wired up.

    http://www.infinity-classics.de/technik/manuals/RSb_technical_sheet.pdf

I tried the other one first and didn't care for it... this, I believe , was the original circuit. I have eliminated the fuse, and the pots are inside the speaker as I have a new backplate for the binding posts, and no good way to wire the pots into the circuit and have them through to the exterior.

that mid pot is 25W...? yeah, maybe I'd keep that one in... are overheating the resistor...?

I have the MResist which are 25W to play with for that.

Not sure why it would be so important to replace that variable resistor? i just leave my iiib's on flat and they sound great... i say deoxit and save some coin and headache. the cap replacement is really were its at.

my reason is they are in crappy shape + to me its a useless adjustment...cleaned them a bunch of times and they are still scratchy....i'm getting rid of them...

You can parallel two Mills MRA-12s for 24 watt

I tried when I rebuilt mine because, intuitively, it seemed like a better part would sound better. It just didn't work out that way.

Because generic L-Pads degrade sound quality. Replacing with high quality series and parallel resistors(or in this case, a single resistor) would make the speakers more transparent.

As for it's wattage, a 12w Mills should be more than enough for a high frequency unit. If it was in series with the midrange, then paralleling a pair of resistors for higher wattage capacity may be needed. As I noted above, Infinity may have used these specific l-pads just because they purchased them in bulk for range of models, etc...

I must be getting too old. i never hear these marked improvements in SQ. I have with caps... replaced several L pads in different low buck speakers That I've had years ago for this reason and could never hear the improvements when placed side by side with the same unconverted speaker model. But I don't spend 1k on IC cables either... maybe I need to improve other areas first

still have to solder in cap on bottom of pic still waiting on resistor that is taking place of pot...

Mills, Solen for lows, Jantzen z-caps on highs...

They sound great...quite detailed, very happy...can't wait until they burn in so I can really judge...I'll take a pic later tonight but they are each in a window so a little heavy in the bass, but that never hurt anyone...Low filter on, one click ahead on mids and highs...haven't listened to the Marantz in a while, what a great little amp...
