going to sand and stain black...

obviously recap and replace resistor...also want to take Ohm reading when pot is set at flat and replace with resistor....never understood this adjustment when we can adjust atthe preamp/integrated amp

what say you...?

Looks like a fun project. I would advise against removing the L-Pad. It's there for a reason. A good cleaning with DeoxIT should square it away.

should be fun...guys on the Infinity part of Audiokarma said its fine just as long as the resistor is above 10w...not going crazy with the caps...less of a budget for these...

The EMITs deserve a quality cap. You can go more cost effective on the Lo-Pass

This is what I've heard as well. Set the L-pad for flat, measure the resistance, then replace with an equal value high power resistor.

    Great project!

you painted the wood as well or is it dark stain. I see the MinWax can there.....

I tried many many many different resistors in place of the Lpads.... and the speaks never sounded quite right. I even went up to MResist Supremes.
Took apart the Lpads , DeOxit, and, well, it was just weird. Just sounded right.

black texture paint on front, black stain on sides...

its a pot that only using 2 legs...which is just a variable resistor...

    the bigger speakers use L-pads...

like I said long time Infinity guys said it was ok...I think the problem starts when there is one for mids and another for the highs

no. on mine only Two legs were used, but yours look to be the same as the high pass parts. The parts list here.... http://www.infinity-classics.de/technik/manuals/RSe_technical_sheet.pdf ... confirms it as the same part that is with my Rsb. AT least the earlier models.

A typical L-Pad consists of adjustable resistance in series and parallel, replacing it with a single resistor will most likely have a negative effect the speaker's response.

its not an L-pad, its a pot

sorry man, it is an L-pad. I am not sure why we are stuck on this.

It appears you're both correct. The component is a typical L-Pad, however only two legs are being used. The 3rd leg, which normally shunts to ground, is not being used, so it's essentially a variable resistor, or "Pot".

so then, these speakers suffer from an impedance shift when that knob is moved?

    coffee, nose, napkin

all joking aside, just based on what I have read, it seems like the crossover point would change with the impedance if left ungrounded. Would this be what they had in mind for changing the frequency response of the driver? I, of course, always assumed it was a matter of just variable resistance.

Is this too much thread derailment BK?

Since it wasn't one of their TOTL speakers, it could just be a shortcut taken.

As far as how much the changes in resistances affect response(besides level), it varies. Since ribbons generally have a very flat impedance curve compared to a typical non-ferrofluid dome, the changes may be minimal.

hahaha, I go away and all hell breaks loose...

I really think Infinity did this so they can say they have more options than other makers in the same price...anyone can change the settings by their preamp or whatever you are using...The Infinity speakers I personally have owned have never been off of the flat setting...its a pain to reach around the back of each speaker all the time....

it would just nice to understand exactly how the pots are operating. I have read some guys having success with a straight value change out with a resistor/ measured pot resistance.

I honestly tried so many values between 1 ohm-5 ohm both in Mills 12W, Mundorf MOX 10W, and Mundorf MResist Supremes, both in the high and mids circuits. Even with allowing some burn in time, nothing ever sounded right until I put the pots back in, set to flat.

On Trey's advice, I even tried a straight signal path with no pot and no resistor..... just a bit bright....
