I was the only one throwing 7 channels around...but hey if you think you want to go that route or 9 or 11 channels then.... back to plan A! get the Pioneer or Onkyo AVR, and a 3 ch or 5 ch amp for the front. The cost of both should be cheaper then going with a 7 channel amp...they are not cheap.

    here's a 3 ch:

    Thanks for all the help!

I went with an Onkyo 929 and the Parasound 1206. Speakers are LSiC, LSi-9, F/X 1000 (side surrounds) and PSW-650.

Even though the room is currently wired for 7.1, I'm holding off for now on the rear surrounds until we're done with the remodeling project & my wife's curtains are re-hung so I can find out how much room I have on the back wall. There's probably only about 12" of vertical space, so the options will be limited... unless y'all have some tricks to get the speakers out off the wall far enough to clear the curtains.

I'm also a bit worried about whether I'm going to have a heat problem in that cabinet. If so, I see some DIY cabinet hackery in my future.

I never did report back after all was done. It took many months to finish the remodel and get the speakers up. In fact, it's been less than a month since I finished up the H/T install:

Please pardon the mess. Picking up after myself is not my forte :-)

WLDock, thanks for the CL links. I ended up with one of those HCA-1206s you linked. Inspector24 came through with the sub and the center. I had to have custom brackets made for the F/X 1000s to get them to hang safely from the beams. I still need to find a better mounting option for the 9s, but so far I'm quite pleased with the system. I went with the 929 for the receiver and a Pro-Ject Debut carbon for the TT.

Now, it's time to move on to the next project: a 2 channel set up. I'll post a new thread for that...

  • I am a bit concerned with the lack of breathing room the onkyo has in your cabinet. Not letting it vent is going to greatly reduce its lifespan. Other wise nice looking room. Well done!
Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. What I am tryin to say is, is that the course of your life, well its changing, and you don't even see it- Forest Bondurant
  • Thanks, Jeremy. For now, I'm keeping the door of the cabinet always open until I can install a couple fans in the back, venting into the back wall.
