I don't think you will find a shop that carries Emotiva or Outlaw. Those are internet direct companies, which is apparently why they can present such a good value, there is not dealer in the chain taking a cut. They rely on price and reputation to promote their products.

Ok Wardo, not trying to be anything but helpful here. Despite the higher wattage rating of your current amps, that A51 will sound better and play louder. Carver amps seem to be more voltage based rather than current based amps. Even the Silver 7t's at 575wpc just run out of gas way to soon, IMO.

    Good to know - thanks.

Any opinion on Sunfire stuff? Same deal as the Carvers? Just curious, came across a 7201 with warranty left for $2k. While it's 7x200, looks like you can bi-amp the fronts. That would actually be a great setup - 400 wpc to the fronts, 200wpc to center and rears.

Just looking at options, and advice. Hadn't even heard of Emotiva and Oulaw 15 years ago, nor did I know they are internet only. Live and learn !

Yes, the ones I've heard sound better to my ears than any of the Carver SS amps, but I haven't heard the model you mentioned.

I have an older Sunfire 5 channel that puts out 405wpc if called for and only weighs 43lbs! They are well liked around here.

Thanks for the feedback, I have no problem sticking with Carver family. As a matter of fact, I like the thought. Just found two of the Cinema Grands on Ebay - looks like they are running between $1500-1600 each. Talked to a fellow by the name of Bill Flannery that used to work for Sunfire (Flannerys Vintage Audio), and he indicated that as long as they power up when I get one,he will "re-furb" (test, replace capacitors, etc....) for $300. So even if I needed to ship one off to him, I would be into it for $2k max.

    What do you guys think:

    Sunfire 5 x 400, (used, $1800-$2k including refurb/update)
    Emotiva XPR 5 x 400 ($2300 new)

The only Outlaw they gets close with that many channels and wpc is the 7700 which is out of my budget.

Cfrizz, really interested in your opinion, as you've been running one of these.

Also, does anyone know if there is a spec or quality difference between the Signature version of the Cinema Grand, vs. "non-signature?

    Thanks in advance!

Dude relax, I'm a fan of Carver and they sound great in my system. Not too mention they have some sentimental value, and many audiophiles actually think they represent some of Carvers better work. Ultimately, it doesn't matter what they think, or what you think (which matters even less to me). IMO they sound great!

If you don't like them so be it. Rich is actually well respected in the Carver community. He has retired recently and turned the business over to Greg.

Not going to get into it with you on the volume thing, I know when the amps headroom is exhausted and when it's close.

While I don't click with Rich on a personal level at all, I have owned a couple of the MKII modified units and I think it is a better sounding amp when modified than it is when stock. However, that being said, I sill opted for an amp with much better bass control than the Carver (Stock or Modified) offered.

Wardo, I got this Sunfire because I wanted a 5 channel amp that had to be at least 200wpc, and this is the only company making them at the time that I can physically lift, and was at a price (used) that I was willing to pay. I bought it from a member here. There are more choices now for lightweight powerful home amps to choose from now then there were when I was shopping for an amp. I then proceeded to stalk Audiogon for a year until I got my Sunfire prepro. I have no regrets and you can't really go wrong with Sunfire gear.

Have had the RTi12's paired with new Denon x4000 for about a week now ( driven by two external amps with 200wpc, so 400 per speaker is available). Have backed out the sub when playing two channel, using "pure direct" mode with avr. Sound really good, clean, well defined lows. If the power is there, there is plenty of base. Sub really isn't required. After a week of messing around with sub, various crossover settings, etc.....found pure direct mode with no sub is awesome for studio recorded stuff - however, some higher range, female vocals can be bright with the direct modes.

On lower volume settings or live music, have found changing to 2ch stereo mode helps balance things out - again, no sub. On low volume I adjust the bass a few db's higher and it sounds great. The clarity and definition at low listening levels is awesome. My wife loves it, we used to have to run some current to the RT2000's to get that level of clarity and accuracy - she's hearing things in music at moderate listening levels she never heard before. Pretty cool. 2ch. stereo mode helps with some of the brightness on certain studio stuff as well.

For $850/pair delivered from Polk Ebay store, I'm thrilled. Word of advice to anyone looking at these, or even the A9's for that matter - get an external amp that will push at least 200wpc.

Feeling pretty good about the music side, now it's time to dial in the HT thing - more settings to tinker around with, especially as I integrate the sub. Last few movies we've watched we're impressive, but I was running large fronts, messing around with crossovers, etc. ... A lot of what I have read has got me thinking the next movie we watch, I will set the fronts to small and play around with XO settings and see what happens.

Soon to be a polk audio member. My rti12 now sit in a warehouse only seventeen minutes away from me. It is killing me. I am currently upgrading my AR-9. I have no issues with my set up. I am hoping newer speakers will sound better just for the fact technology gets better. Will be running the rti12 with two carver M-4.0t. Have high hopes new rti12 will sound great with this much power used in a bi-amp configuration. Carver tfm-35t running two center channel ar speakers. Currentlly the AR-9's support 4-12" subs. Lots of bass. Rti12 should be able to match. I hope.

Keep the AR-9's, they are a much better speaker. Instead, upgrade the amp(s).

I am only pushing 120w to my 12's, sounds great to me, but I have tried using my 110w avr, for kicks, it was pretty bad. Do not get to hung up on how they sound at first, they will improve over time. I purchased mine in January from Polk, it took a couple of weeks before they sounded right. I have found they are very source dependent and they will bring out the worst of a poor quality cd player, but will sound fantastic with a quality source.
