    Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

    Several that I've not heard before that I like, and a few others that I've heard before but didn't know their title. Looking them up always leads to a chain of youtube links in the sidebar, which led me to a few others such as several Robin Trower instrumentals, and there also seems to be an instrumental version of most Hendrix songs.

    Does Dire Straits have any instrumentals?

    On a related note, I was fishing around on youtube and found this excellent documentary on Mark Knopfler and his 6 most influential guitars. Kinda long but worth watching: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27OT_FSWrIE

    That documentary is good -- if you can find the one called "Mark Knopfler - A Life In Songs" you'd probably enjoy that one even more. It's very good. It's been up on YouTube as well, just a matter of whether the posts stayed there or not...

    I can't think of any 'Dire Straits' instrumentals offhand, but Knopfler did quite a bit of movie soundtrack work. His 'Going Home' (Theme Of The Local Hero) was one of his favorites to play, but the rest of that soundtrack has a lot of string-type stuff that I wouldn't necessarily put in the 'rock' category. Most of the 'A Shot At Glory' soundtrack stuff is instrumental too, and I really like that one. Not sure I'd call it 'rock' either, but it's more upbeat with a Celtic/Scottish/Irish feel in a lot of it.

    As for his other soundtracks, I haven't heard them yet.

    Sigur Ros is wonderful but they sing in a TOTALLY different language

    Thanks for the additional suggestions. I didn't think of it before, but there's a Grammy award for best rock instrumental (the list in the following link includes the winners and nominees since 1980):

    So I can probably add quite a few to my list from these too.


    A related question (since I don't really want to buy all the CD's for all these songs, and it will be mostly used as background music at very low volume anyway): I'm not much of a music downloader, so I'd appreciate some suggestions on what download services would likely have most of the songs listed in this thread? I suppose MP3 will be the most common format (?) but I'd at least like to get 320kbps sample rate.

    I honestly recommend Spotify. There's an option to stream at an "extreme" level, which is 320kbs (though that may not be available for all songs.)

    You can play them for free there and put up with the occasional commercial, or you can pay something like 9-10 bucks a month and enjoy no commercials, as well as the ability to download up to 3,333 songs to your phone/ipad/whatever other device you like. I use the songs that are saved on my phone as an ipod when I'm on long road trips.

    But if you just want to get ears on a few of these bands, I'm sure the free version would work well enough for you.

    Nobody does instrumental space rock/jazz like Billy Cobham's early 70's offerings, "Spectrum" and "Total Eclipse." Weather Report, Return to Forever, Larry Coryell/Eleventh House, Hancock, and a couple other bands messed around with it, but Cobham just steamrolled it right over you.
