  • The builder of Essence Amps had become ill. I've owned his amp for 25 years. I have upgraded everything in all of my systems, except his amp. When I first heard the amp, I owned a MacIntosh. I bought the Essence. And, I have never tired of it. So, I was just wondering if there was any news about him or if he has any new products out. I also own his speaker cables. Oh, I haven't upgraded them either. So, I was looking for info when I ran across this forum, basically mocking a guy that I know, in person, to be a wonderful, thoughtful individual, who is well respected in the audio industry and a product that I also know to be an exceptional amp. From what I can tell, two people on here have heard the amps. The other person wrote, "Sweet amp...taken from experience." So, 100% of the people who have heard the amp respect it. Those who haven't mock. The reality of it is that Essence Amps have
been extremely respected for 25 years. Dale's other products, his cables and his speakers also get rave reviews. The guy has been innovating products in this industry for decades. So, I'm wondering how is it that no one on here knows him? Or, how is it that no one bothered to read reviews of his amps, cables, or speakers? No one said,
"I've never heard this amp, but they were praised at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest." Or anything that resembles enough curiosity to do some research on a product. For example, in 15 minutes, I found 2 posts from the person who wrote the ad that started this, apologizing for the ad. It was thoughtful, well written and heartfelt. That is the person I know.

So, I was simply trying to say that I know this product and I know this man and both do not deserve the ridicule that was being leveled on here. There was no curiosity and no one seems interested in learning anything.

But, what I really dislike is that the reason I began buying gear 40 years ago was because I love music. I love music, not gear, music. And, the amp that I attempted to defend, (unsuccessfully), got me closer to the music than any amp I have ever heard. That's why I have kept it 25 years and I am still not tired of it. I have other amps in other systems, but I treasure my Essence Amp. And, trust me, if I wanted to, I could switch it out today.

So, I think I'll stop writing now and go listen to some music. And, I
regret my attempt to share some first hand experience with the product in question.

And, I apologize if my passionate attempt to defend crossed the line.

Don't be discouraged Hambone and no need to apologize. Some in this forum have mocked the great Roger Russell formerly Director of Acoustic Research at McIntosh Laboratory, Inc. Unfortunately, that's the way it is sometimes. Many here seem to have their favorites and not so favorites.

Using Roger Russell to support your argument is like saying meth makes you a better astrophysicist. Absolutely ridiculous. But then we have come to expect nothing less from the troll king himself. (patiently waits for the butte hurt troll to report this post for a personal attack because the troll can't take it like a man)

@Hambone1958 the amp itself was not the target of mischief. The ad claiming mystical and magical properties was.
One would argue that Nelson Pass' designs are some of the best even but rarely do you see such an over the top ad claiming such things for his products.
I have experience with Essence equipment and I like it but I found the ad to be very amusing and way over the top. I don't discount obscure names in the industry because a lot of them have great designs or products. Gary Dodd, Alan Yun, James Zhang...just a few obscure names who have brought fantastic products to the market but never made mystical magical claims like the ad did.

Long story short, the mockery was about the ad itself and not necessarily the product being sold.

    @Hambone1958,

    Apology accepted.

I neither praised nor mocked your amp, and I was among those who have never heard it.

I criticized your "broadside" about the ignorance of folks on this Forum, which was implicit in the cliché you chose to use, although you were apparently not aware of the complete quotation from Gray's poem from which your cliché was excerpted. Or, should I ask, were you ignorant of the full quotation?

With that said, to claim that any amp is the "best monoblock ever," while using your criterion that the person making or disputing this claim must have heard the amp -- is consummately absurd.

This claim is absurd on its face for at least two reasons:

First, as has been noted by others above, this is a matter of individual opinion in the highly subjective field of audio gear. In such a field, there is no "best ever" anything in a universal sense. De gustibus non est disputandum.

Second, this claim cannot be made, again using your own criterion that you cannot judge an amp unless you have listened to it, unless the individual who makes it has in fact listened to every other amp that has ever been produced. That is impossible.

So, I appreciate your passion. Like you, I have a passion for a particular brand of vintage gear. In my case the brand is Perreaux, and I am still using some Perreaux gear after 25+ years.

Nevertheless, I would not use my passion as an excuse to validate a claim that my Perreaux amps are the "best ever," much less implicitly or explicitly to denigrate others who might deign to dispute my [absurd] claim.

    Again, just my humble opinion.

Dude, Granted you may know stereo but your comebacks are as juvenile as your pubescent putdowns!
Kick back.. light a spliff and enjoy the music bud! You may actually be surprised by your new found appreciation and will in all likelihood feel less inclined to look for the opportunities to insult others
[as for your comment-"most of them grew up"- knowing what a difference it can make] I can site Willy N. as Just one of many examples of those in the know!]
