Check out this road test.
How many cars can you punch the accelerator in top gear and break the tires loose? -
Any car like this one is going to require FULL ATTENTION at all times.
If you push it too hard at any point, when it lets go, you are in for
trouble. Watching the guys at top gear on the closed track gives you a
pretty good idea of what happens. There, they just slide off into the dirt.
In the real world of streets, not good. These things are way over the top.
There are more and more super fast cars being made.
And more and more of them are going to end up like this one."The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." --Thomas Jefferson -

Maybe...maybe not. Any car is a tool, a machine. It's the operator of that tool or machine that does the killing, not the car. Much the same way a hammer is used to drive nails, unless the operator chooses to use it for something else, or abuse that tool.

Let me add, I'm indeed sorry for the mans death. Seemed like a decent dude, not your typical Hollywood dipsh$t. What I don't know is if he as a passenger condoned the driver's speed or asked him to slow down. We will never know that. If he condoned it, then I have a hard time feeling sympathy for the dude. If he didn't....well, what can you say. A victim of circumstances ?HT SYSTEM-

Then that's a faulty tool, but then given the apparent consequences wouldn't it make sense to be in a car with more dependability ? A better safety record ?HT SYSTEM-

Don't really think you can get a solid idea of how reliable a vehicle is when it has a production run of less then 1500 units, especially when the majority of them are probably never really driven.Wristwatch--->Crisco -

That's the same argument I've made for years regarding guns. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. But this isn't the appropriate forum for that. -

It's a race machine. It's intended use is racing.
They were on a city street. Kind of like doing
target practice shooting cans in downtown LA.
Any mistake is likely to hurt somebody.
They liked to drive fast. They drove fast.
At least they didn't kill anyone not involved.
Yes, guns don't kill people. Idiots do.
I stopped hanging around the gun crowd years ago.
At least 1 out of every 5 made me uncomfortable.
I mean that in a very scary way."The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." --Thomas Jefferson -

It's amazing how easy your life becomes when you stop hanging around with idiots (relatives don't count as you don't have a choice most of the time)“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” ~ Mark Twain -

We're not all bad. That's the thing I HATE about the anti-gun media. When they want to interview someone on the subject of guns, they purposely get one of the "gun idiots" that you speak of, to represent the pro-gun portion of the public. -
Here's a review of the car from Car and Driver magazine if anyone's interested:
http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/porsche-carrera-gt-road-test
If you read the C&D review, you'll see they mention how tricky the car is to get moving from a stop. You're either roasting the tires or stalling it, unless your a damn good driver. From what I've read, one of the shop's employees was having difficulty getting the car back into the garage as he kept on stalling it. The owner of the shop jumped in the car, Walker riding shotgun, to see if there was really a problem with the car. Whether he tore off like a bat out of hell or not, the preliminary assessment of the LA Sheriff's office is that they were doing about 45 mph at the time of impact, which was the posted speed limit on that road. Granted, they were about to enter a 15mph zone, but (so far, at least) they seem to have been operating within the law when the car crashed. They've also backed off the idea that there was drag racing involved.
Other reports have mentioned that there was a puddle of fluid under where the car had sat before they took it out. Based on the fluid under the car, and the fact that the skid marks from the crash are in a straight line, the most plausible theory with the information currently available is that the steering failed in some catastrophic manner causing the driver to lose control and it crashing. Most power steering fluid is flammable; lord knows what the hell kind of fluid a $500,000 supercar uses, but let's assume it's earthly enough to be flammable also. Leaking PS fluid, heat, other materials like magnesium and the binding agents used in the manufacture of carbon fiber structures all add up to one volatile recipe for a fire.
IMO, it doesn't sound like anyone did anything "wrong", or reckless. Maybe my opinion will change as the investigation evolves. When you live the life of someone who drives cars of that type, your more apt to die in that manner, just like the people who work with big cats are more likely to get mauled to death, and just like the people who ride trains on their daily commute are more likely to die in a train crash then someone who doesn't. That's how odds work. We're all going to go somehow or another.Wristwatch--->Crisco -
I seriously doubt they were doing 45 mph. These "supercars" have "super" brakes. And even if the driver forgot where the brake pedal was, I don't think that a crash at 45 mph would destroy the car as it did. No....these guys were waaaaaay over the speed limit. Also, what's with the power steering leak on a $500,000 car? (if there even was a leak).

If a car runs out of power steering fluid, doesn't that just turn the power steering into a manual rack steering? Or will it somehow lock up the steering wheel completely?
-
I'll bet a steel pole could do a ton of damage to that car at 45mph. And what we are looking at is after it burned, which looks reasonable even if it wasn't wrecked first.Vinyl, the final frontier...

I was just going on what the accident investigators on the scene had reported.
Ever seen an F1 car in a wreck? What do they do, stay intact or disintegrate to diffuse the force of impact?
WRT to the price tag, there's no guarantee that price equals free of problems. Especially in a car that in it's 4k mile life, has had 5 owners, and been poked and prodded by everybody from a race car stable level tech to a multi millionaire who only knows how to sign a check.Wristwatch--->Crisco -

On most cars, yes. Who knows on that thing, though. My train of thought was that if you were going straight and then had to make a sudden correction those wide **** sticky tires would be damn hard to turn without power assist.Wristwatch--->Crisco -

Yeah, but EVERYTHING in these guy's lives is a little different than in the lives of "normal" folk. Afterall, at 40, he was dating a 23-year old woman and had been dating her for the past SEVEN years. How many 33-year olds do you know who are dating 16-year olds? Or, put another way, how many of you would allow your 16-year old daughter to date a 33-year old man? Just sayin'.... -

Not as embarrassing as a part time racer and a Hollywood "racing actor" crashing into a pole on a city street."The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. Actually, people with guns kill people, but your right, there are forums out there for listening to music while you fire a gun....or something like that. -
People with cars kill people. I heard the government is going to try and pass a bill to make it illegal to own fast cars.
-

I agree with John...
The guy driving was the part time racer. And owned a racing shop.
So the statement is more than true. Two guys. Hence the "and"."The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others.
