I was in 6th grade in Middletown, Ohio and there was a knock on our classroom door. Our teacher went to the door and came back in crying with a television and turned it on for us to watch. We watched the news coverage for a few minutes, and then school was dismissed. I remember going outside and seeing adults standing on the sidewalks crying. I had never seen so many adults cry like that before. Not too long before that day, President Kennedy had ridden up the street in front of our school in a white convertible. I remember the whole school got out to stand along the street and wave to him as he went by. He smiled and waved back at us.

It really doesn't matter the man is dead let's stop and let him rest in peace.!

I mean what dose it say about us as a people or country that we have to turn every major accident or national tragedy into some kind of a perverted yearly anniversary or celebration complete with days or weeks of 1 or 2 hour long B.S. conspiracy theory movies or documentary's on it. i.e Pearl Harbor, J.F.K, R.F.K, MLK, The Challenger and Columbia, Flight 800, 9/11 to name a few. I think should stop now before I get too pissed off!.

I'm so sick of it all I could just scream.

Not even close to being born yet but all this talk about how people were crying. I can't in my lifetime think of any politicians assassination that would have had that kind of impact on a population. Society is very different today.

Thanks I have been lurking lots lately just not saying much. With kids under two, my wife having back issues and work, well no time to be doing much else. I have not watched a movie or played a video game in about a year.

I was far from being born, and I can't speak about that specific situation since I wasn't around yet.

I do, however, know the feeling when people ask me where I was on 9-11-01. Maybe not a fair comparison, but that would probably be the closest thing I could relate to.

What would you guys consider JFK's greatest achievement ?

I want to say off the top of my head that the way he handled the Cuban missile conflict and nuclear relations with Russia has to be near the top. Also creating the Peace corps. After that, everything else seems trivial.

I was in 6th grade and stayed home sick that day. Around 1240 I got a call from my mom who was at work. She said, "turn on the TV, something happened to President Kennedy. I think he has been shot."

Don't remember much else that day - very sad.

Watched "Parkland" the other night, the new movie about the three days surrounding the assassination. Powerful performances by Paul Giamatti (as Abraham Zapruder) and Billy Bob Thornton. It portrayed the tragedy on a smaller scale: how it affected individuals like the secret service detail guarding him, the FBI group that had Oswald in their office 10 days before, and of course Jackie. She showed incredible courage under the worst circumstances.

In the Zapruder film you see her apparently trying to escape by climbing out of the back of the convertible after the kill shot exploded his head. I read that according to the FBI agent who jumped on the back of the car as it sped away that she was only retrieving a piece of his skull, which she put in her pocket and later handed to the charge nurse in the trauma OR.

I was not yet a glint in my father's eye, but I think we have been living with the fallout for decades. I don't thing a singular event in the history of this nation messed up the minds of so many as watching the events of those three days in November unfold live on TV.

The only events I do remember from the '60's would be Neil Armstrong on the Moon, and vaguely the assassination of RFK..

He had several achievements that were swept aside in the wake of his death, including setting the date for complete withdrawal of troops from Viet Nam, and the cancellation of the Federal Reserve's ability to print money. Had he lived to see through a second term, we would certainly be living in a vastly different country.

Going slightly off-topic, I was just watching the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, and he had Tom Brokaw on the program talking about JFK. I have noticed that Tom is looking pretty old as of late. In fact, both he and Dan Rather were on the Today Show this morning, and at 73 Tom looks older than Dan does at 82 (IMO). Didn't Tom have a major health issue recently though?

I believe he survived lung cancer

Yes it was a really bad day, I remember watching it and understanding there were going to be consequences, not old enough to fully understand but old enough.

Camelot had just died along with all your hopes and wishes for the future that might have been and you got to watch it unfold live on TV.

You really had to be alive to understand what J.F.K meant too most of the young people of this country. I would say the country (especially the young) took it almost as hard as when F.D.R died Based on what my dad told me about the people and the country when F.D.R. died.

I have a brief memory, at age 4, of not wanting to watch the funeral on TV and my father making me sit and watch, telling me "this is history". I only remember the flame on the round black ball torches that we're framing the burial site.
