Congrats on a rare find in great condition.

There are so many wonderful things to do to a set of SRS SDAs:

    1. Custom woodwork.
    2. Lighter, thinner grille cloth.
    3. RD tweeters.
    4. Dynamat the drivers and passives.
    5. Armacell gaskets for drivers, tweeters and passives.
    6. Replace internal wiring.
    7. Replace crossover board.
    8. Replace crossover resistors, capacitors, and inductors.
    9. Custom binding post plate.
    10. Custom interconnect cable.
    11. Steel rings for drivers, tweeters and passives.
    12. Upgrade binding posts.
    13. Upgrade binding post jumpers.

Have fun and post lots of pics as you progress.

I have done mod packages with three pairs of SDA's. Each time, I simply could not believe the results. That's why with each pair of speakers I did, I did a higher level of mods than the pair before. I started with 2B's, then 1C's, now I am using CRS+'s upgraded to 4.1TL specification. With my 4.1TL's, I have done every mod mentioned above by DarqueKnight with the exception of the grill cloth and the internal wiring, and I intend to do these mods at some point as well. I also haven't done the last mod he listed because the 4.1TL's don't have jumpers. You will not regret doing any of these mods, I can assure you of that. Good luck!
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

It is really hard to tell from the pics but how close are they from not only the side walls and the walls behind the speakers?

You want if possible 3' from the side walls and I would start at 6" from the wall behind the speakers.

300 hours? My upgraded 1Bs sounded improved from the moment the turn-on protection relay of the amp clicked and the music started.

Some people have the mindset that, "if these mods were so great, the manufacturer would have done them" and "doing all these mods means you end up with something that is totally different from what the manufacturer intended". They are wrong on both counts. They don't realize that most of the mods we do were/are recommended by Polk's engineering department and/or Matthew Polk himself!.

The vast majority of mass produced goods represent a compromise between what was designed and what could be profitably and efficiently manufactured. Corners have to be cut to meet price points. As long as you do modifications that work within the original design specifications, you are actually moving closer to the original engineering design and performance rather than away from it.

    Well said Ray.

You must be in my neck of the woods. I've seen these listed locally and been tempted, but don't need another large pair of SDA's. Yes, you may have an opportunity some day to get them cheaper. Maybe. Maybe not. These look to be in great shape and if your looking for the 3.1TL's I wouldn't hesistate. In fact, I'd secure them IMMEDIATLY before someone else scoops them up. Just my .02, and no, I'm not the owner....

Agreed. Most of the good stuff seem to be in the North. Most of the time I don't bother since it is too far too drive. I saw the 3.1TL listing for a few days but did not bother to call until I saw Grizwall's post. I was thinking why he wants the 2C when he already has the SRS. He inspires me to go out and get the 3.1TL even though I don't need a new pair of speaker. Now it spreads like a disease, I know that I am gonna snatch the 2.3 or 1.2 if they ever show up.

There is no 2C model, perhaps you meant 1C. Also, be aware that there are 2.3, 1.2, 2.3TL and 1.2TL models.

My bad, butter fingers. Yes, I am aware that there are the TL and non TL version. Probally don't know that since the vintage section does not show all the models. The SDA Handbook helps a lot.

Not to thread jack - but this thread inspired me to pickup a pair of 3.1TL's on local CL this a.m. The owner had some Carver gear too, but I passed on that.

I have them setup very briefly here at the house (the restored/mod'd 1.2TL's are at my office) and using just a simple Rotel amp and my iPhone as the soundsource I am already impressed. I have to get the two sets together and do a genuine A/B comparison, but to be honest, I think I'm going to like the 3.1's over the 1.2's in the end. The latter have the Gimpod boards and VR3 selection of caps/resistors - original inductors - new tweeters and a mix of old/new MW's.

Fortunately, I don't have to get rid of either right now.

Thanks for the nice thread - forced me to get out of the house and snag a deal ($300).

Depending on the price and condition of that Carver gear, you may be able to sell it for a profit. Some of his gear goes for decent prices if you can get it for the right price yourself.

I considered that, and even thought about making it a setup for the home shop with the 3.1TL's. I have a pair of Rotels here. I have more gear from my little summer fetish sprawling purchase than I can use - and am gradually sorting that as time permits (fleabay mostly). Nice guy though. Once he found I was a Polk fan price dropped dramatically. Have to love that.

Excellent, my 3.1's won't be going anywhere soon. They are a good fit for our room and great match for my gear. $300. is a steal of a deal, have Trey rebuild those x-overs also and you already know you will be in for a treat.

How many times have we seen this happen to our speakers.
When I bought the 1C's the guy sent me pictures with cowboy boots on top.
I started to stay home, needless to say the tops had to be sanded and restained.
