Having issues with a RTA 11T

I just noticed one of my RTA 11Ts seems to have lost power. Both drivers sound like they are drowning and lack any clarity and the tweeter doesn't seem to have any output at all. It's brother is not having any issues, so I switched the channels to make sure the amp isn't the problem, and it is definitely the speaker.

Any ideas as to what the problem is?

I am using a Yamaha HTR-5860 as a pre-amp and an Adcom GFA-5500 to power them.

Thanks for any help,
Ian

    Hello Ian,
In all likelihood the 6.5" drivers and the tweeter are defective and would have to be replaced. You can confirm this by exchanging these components from one speaker cabinet to the other. If the bad sound follows the components then you've tracked the problem down. Replacements can be purchased from Polk's CS department at: 1-800-377-7655 or via email at: polkcs@polkaudio.com. Be sure to mention your CP membership for reduced parts prices.
    Best regards, Ken

Either the polyswitch has gone bad and/or you've cooked the tweeter. When the tweeter isn't playing the drivers will sound as you described. Just swap the tweeters, leave the mid-drivers alone and report back.

Thanks for the input guys. Looks like I'm going to tear the speakers down and see what it is for sure.

Confirmed that the tweeter is gone. I think I'm going to pick up a pair of SL2000s on eBay(for a spare). I have been reading mixed thoughts on the new replacements Polk offers.

    Thanks for the help,
    Ian

Call Polk and order the RDO-194's instead. As a Club member you will get them for 48 bucks each and free shipping. You will thank me later.

I would then upgrade the crossovers. Buy the time the updates have been completed, you will think you bought new (and much better) speakers.

    what John said....

their good... the replacements I mean. at least in mt RTA11T's... I just pulled out a pair of 5JR's with the 2000 today that I haven't listened to in a coon's age, and after so long with the RDO-194's, the shortfalls of the SL2000 are much more obvious. But that is your decision.
If you really want the Sl2000 , I will sell you the pair out of my 5JR to help fund some RDO-194 for me..... And I also have the ones out of my 11T's, but they are not as good of shape. The ones in the 5JR are pretty sweet.

But the upgrade, in my opinion, is really the best choice.

question ? Does the RDO-194 fit the same way? Or do you have to modify where their different ? Thanks. Id like to do some to mine as well

The RDO-194-1 is a drop-in replacement. No modifications required if you're replacing the SL2000

Thank you kindly for info. That makes it easy if you have never done modification-such as upgrade crossovers/tweets. Ive replaced drivers. Tweets. Crossovers. But never done any upgrades on original stock speakers. But im sure its fun and can be a little costly. But from what i read the outcome outweighs the cost in the long run :) thanks again
