I have a pair of Monitor 50's as well. Is my amp so underpowered that I should consider switching my mains to those?

Probably not a bad idea. How do I find out what the minimum power requirements are for my A9's, to get them out of harms way?

Certainly you need a dedicated amp. I have parasound halo driving rti a9s and they sound great. Why not save up some more money (if budget is an issue at present), and buy pio sc series avr? I used to have marantz Sr 6006 (110 w per channel), and it was pretty nice. Warm sound. But recently i hooked up pio elite sc-65 and a huge difference. It also has preouts as well. Emotiva is a good economical option. Look for a good avr. Or a good preamp, but then you will need multi channel amp.

I am looking at the Pioneer Elite SC-67. It was benched by some hi-fi publication at over 110W per channel with 7 channels driven at 8 ohms if I remember correctly. That should make up a sizeable audio quality difference in my Denon as well as provide more power to the A9's.

Your best bet is to buy a Denon 4520 CI Receiver. You will be able to run your system 7.2 without an issue.
It has the power to run 7.2, all the new hdmi connections and other whistles. They can be had for a respectable price refurbished. Thats how I bought mine. I am currently running a 9.2 system off it. I'm looking to add two more for a 11.2 system which will then require me to add a amp.

Wow! That XPA-7 looks killer! That would solve all my issues no doubt, and inevitably lead to divorce as well! Anyway, I did what I thought was the right thing to do and addressed all my wants and needs in one go. I ordered a Pioneer Elite SC-67.

I think the Pioneer Elite will suit your needs. It's definitely better than the average budget AVR. If I'm looking at the manual right, it can push about 85w per channel simultaneously. Seeing as how things don't typically push all speakers simultaneously, you will likely get a little more out of it than that. The only downside is what was mentioned earlier, if you want comparable quality a few years from now, you will have to shell out for another beefy AVR rather than just a processor. Still an excellent choice though. The fever may hit down the road and drive you to get a more powerful amp anyway

Hey all .. just joined CP .. i ordered an entire set of polk monitors for my 7.1 setup .. 65s for L and R, 35s for surrounds and front highs and a 25 for C .. after reading through this thread I'm afraid I'm going to damage my speakers by using my existing Onkyo ht-s5400 receiver .. I bought the HTiB about a year and a half ago and finally became unsatisfied with the sound quality .. now that i switched to the Polk's it sounds great .. just worried I'm doing something wrong..
