So my 6 year old came home from school today upset because the lunch lady said she could not eat her chips that
we sent along with a ham and cheese sandwich. I mean who the " F " does this woman think she is telling my kid
she can't eat her chips that I as a parent seen no problem with! It wasn't a big bag just a hand full in a zip lock
bag.

It's bad enough she comes home with a lunchbox that is full ( she didn't eat her lunch ) because she said she didn't
have time. Her class is the last to go to lunch and she says that they only get a certain amout of time to eat and
go out to play, if they are running behind it cuts into her time I guess.

I just don't get it!!

My kid had a hell of a time adjusting to middle school. Having little time to eat was just part of it. He has been doing school online and loves it. As and Bs and a much happier kid. He still socializes with his friends and plays soccer. Some schools are just terrible and there are.better options.

    Jon,
Welcome to the nanny state where you as the parent are less and less of any importance. Sure would be nice if you could take your kid.....and your money out of the public school system and use it for private schools, tutors, home schooling. A loss of coinage is the only thing these boneheads understand.

Yeah, that was my immediate reaction as well, hard to believe that...

The bag of chips was still in lunch box and I believe her for what she has said.

Ther has been several times that she has came home with a full lunch box or only a bite taken out of sandwich
    or thimgs not ate.

I went to her school one time for her birhday and sat with her during class and lunch. The time they have is
for all classes in her grade level so if the time was an hour that was for the whole grade level, not for each class.
So being that she (her) class is the last to get to lunch room, go through the lunch line, sit down and eat then go
outside or to the gym she really doesn't have a lot of time beleave me.

So the say the kids must eat healthy but the have to jam the food in their mouth and take a swig of water to
wash it down and move on.

HEY WAIT!!!! I'VE DONE THAT BEFORE....... IT WAS THE ARMY!!!

Seems like they have a "no junk food" policy and chips qualify as junk food. I agree that chips are junk food. There are better options for snacks. I wouldn't call a ham and cheese sandwich healthy either. Think long term.

    Agree with BlueFox and Assimilated.

Possible she couldn't eat the chips because it was time to go, not because she wasn't allowed to have chips. If you sent lunch, she should have plenty of time to eat. The lack of time should only effect those who have to go through the lunch line.

Have a civil talk with administration and get the facts. This could be a teachable moment for you regardless.

I doubt very seriously that "junk food" is not allowed. Probably not allowed to be sold at school or served in the cafeteria, but not prohibited from being brought from home.

My mother was a teacher for thirty two years, and this sounds like a normal complaint from a parent. Wish parents would let the schools take care of it or take care of his or her education.

I'll also add that I've felt this same way when my kids come home and tell me something that happened. Once I talk to the teacher, I'm usually not confused anymore.

No offense, but you're putting a lot of stock in what a 6 year old is telling you.

As my son's kindergarten said on Meet the Teacher night: If you don't believe everything they tell you happens at school, we won't believe everything they tell us that happens at home.

We'd all probably be embarrassed to know the stories that have been told on us by our kids:redface:

Caving in and taking the kids side with out even hearing the other side is just going to contribute to "The Generation of Whiners". Knowing kids, I would suspect less talking and more eating will greatly help empty a lunch box. If I could have drove a wedge between my parents and teachers school would have been a lot easier for me.

I have no doubt your kid was told they couldn't eat their chips. My nephew was told his little Debbie zingers were off limits too. The school sent home a letter asking them to please refrain from sending these types of things again because they don't promote the " healthy values" they are trying to instill in the children.

I'd be willing to bet this wasn't for lunch, but rather at snack time. Many schools ask that you send a "healthy" snack. In addition to teaching healthy values that will save us all lots of money in health care costs, it also prevents parents from sending candy bars, etc. which get the kids hyped up resulting in more problems.

Unfortunately, the "It's my job to teach my kids..." doesn't work because many parents shirk the responsibility. Good for you, unfortunately not many can do this, and they know it. With 40% of kids being born out of wedlock, or 2 parents working to make ends meet who's home to do it ?

I often wonder if 50% of people pulled their kids to homeschool, would any teachers get laid off ? Would your taxes go down ? Nah, wishfull thinking. The only way to change the public school system is to regain control of the coinage and put the power back into the hands of the parent.

I know a few who have home schooled and for the most part their kids were high achievers. The one thing I have noticed about home schooled kids is their lack of social graces. They seem to be more so kept in a bubble. If your going to home school, the kid needs to socialize with other kids too. Getting them involved in sports or other clubs with kids their own age is very important.

Hey now....thats were I was, at the center.

High school was a hoot for me, the first 2 years anyway. The worst being my softmore year. Suspended from school, 26 days. Detetions, about 150. Pulled the fire alarm, hit the Dean in the head with a snowball, broke the cameras on the roof watching us. Knocked over lockers so they fell like dominos. Yeah, good times......but I was an A-B student who never took a book home and that pissed off the Dean. He accused me of cheating once, couldn't understand how someone of my caliber could pull off grades like that. We actually became good friends my third year of high school of which I graduated a year early. There are educators, and there are teachers. I was fortunate enough to have had many good educators in my youth to show me the right path. Public schools aren't all bad, as I pounce on them every chance I get. But it's painfully obvious that they have morfed into something else from 40 years ago.

Maybe this would bring classrooms back to a manageable size. I've got a good friend who teaches kindergarden and I'm stunned by the ammount that she has to spend out of pocket for classroom supplies. I know high school teachers who have to do the same thing. Maybe what we need to do is cut 300 BILLION out of defense spending and put it directly into schools, building better ones, shrinking classrooms, and giving the teachers the tools and help they need to operate a classroom properly. Have you ever been in a room with 32 teenagers, good luck trying to keep all of them on task! Our schools are becoming a daycare rather than a learning institution. This should be the number one issue, but we seem to be ignoring it and just patching it as we go. I guess thats kind of our MO here lately, patch it to keep it working and never really address the issue at hand.

Lets see what our man Jefferson has to say on this issue...

"I think by far the most important bill in our whole code is that for the diffusion of knowledge among the people. No other sure foundation can be devised, for the preservation of freedom and happiness...Preach, my dear Sir, a crusade against ignorance; establish & improve the law for educating the common people. Let our countrymen know that the people alone can protect us against these evils [tyranny, oppression, etc.] and that the tax which will be paid for this purpose is not more than the thousandth part of what will be paid to kings, priests and nobles who will rise up among us if we leave the people in ignorance."

Successful schooling is a 2-way street; parents need to ensure their kids know the basics, have MANNERS, and good discipline; Teachers need to ensure they TEACH---not politicize, step in as surrogate parent, or disrespect the parent by going against their established norms. I spent most of my elementary school life taking a sandwich, chips and an orange for lunch, along with 10 cents for 2 milks. I'm not damaged in any way. This is just more of the same "programming" that goes on (and for some reason we ALLOW it to go on) in our public school system. This whole concept of "we know better than you, whats best for your child" pulls the rug of respect, right out from under parents, and should not be tolerated. It's none of anyones goddam business, what I send my child to school with, for lunch.

TAXPAYERS, take CHARGE of these schools. You pay for them, so ensure that material is being presented in a factual, unbiased manner. INSIST that school staff remain out of your personal business, life, choices, and decisions. Get involved, and get other like-minded parents to rally around the cause as well.

    Which part?

The fact that I think that he needs to get an adult account of what happened and not a 6 year olds account?
If his daughter was truly just not allowed to eat chips, I'd definitely have a problem with that as a parent. I wouldn't just accept it and tell my kid, "Sorry, no more chips."

The fact that I send my kid a somewhat healthy snack to school because the school asked me to do so? What kind of person wouldn't want their child to be healthier???

Tha fact that I try to work with my childs school instead of against it?

I have a good working relationship with my kids teachers which goes a long way when there is an issue.
