Jeff, when you're at Krell can you find out if they'd have a box and foam packaging that would fit my amp? It's a KAV-2250. My box was ruined in a flood a few years ago. If they have a box that would work, I'd take a ride up there to get it. I live in CT. Planning on moving next year, so I want the box if possible. Thanks man....
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

Really?? Come on Dan, you can't be for real...
I thought with non common ground amps you just had to lift the ground in the SDA cable or get one of those non common ground cables from Polk. This Deadnought seems like a waste of effort to put a huge transformer in line.
Maybe I'm not fully understanding this design.

    Sure I'll check for you.
By the way, I asked them for a box for the 600 when we were trying to ship it up here and they quoted me $400.00.

    More bad advice.

    About the Krell....

That means he has to use the AI-1/Dreadnought.
Can't you just lift the ground in the SDA cable or use a non common ground cable from polk ? Can't one build one of these non common ground interface cables instead of using a transformer? How are you wiring in the dreadnought?

You do realize that this is a Matthew Polk recommendation, right?

Well I think it was more of a reusable crate that was shipping worthy....
I'm sure it was wood and well packed with foam.
Here is what we/he came up with.
It took me an hour to unpack this thing!

The dreadnought is a non common ground cable just like the original Polk AI-1 it's just an upgraded one that Matt Polk recommends...

As much as I'd like to take the credit, it was the original owner that came up with the design.
The thing was rock solid and bound down with the yellow ratcheting strap that you see.
He left the whole assembly right with the crate!
Everything was shrink wrapped with layers of bubble wrap and cardboard.
A mighty packing job for a mighty amp!

The stock AI-1 or the Dreadnought (Avel 800V or 1000V transformer) is part of the non common ground interface cable. The transformer (1:1) is used to isolate the ground in order that dual mono, mono block or non-common ground amps can be used with all pin/blade SDA's and some blade/blade models.

Only thing I would add to that is that a lot of us have started using the Dreadnought even with common ground amps, and are finding the results to be quite beneficial compared to a straight connection between the two speakers, even when using high quality cable.

Used with common ground amps I would think the reduction in DC resistance should improve the bass slam and definition?

Gotcha , How does it wire up? You remove the stock SDA cable and use this in it's place? It looks to have Binding posts on the back so you use speaker wire like spades or banana on the amp Transformer side and what on the speaker side? Pins?

This makes me think that there are other gremlins involved in my setup.
My bass is far more solid with better extension without any cable hooked up to the SDA side of the speakers.
Also the mids are somewhat grainy as well.
Although DK did mention that as a problem when the dreadnought was not fully burned in.

Most Dreadnought users construct the "SDA Cable" out of high quality speaker wire. I made mine with spades on both ends. One end connects to the Pin (or in my case Cardas BP that takes the place of the pin) and the negative speaker BP, and the other end to the DN BP's. Both speakers are connected this way. The DN isolates any grunge that would normally be shunted to ground and passes only the audio signal between the SDA speakers in each cabinet.

I've used both the 800VA A-L and the 1000VA A-L, both with a common ground amp and a dual mono. The results are very beneficial and easy to hear. There is improvement after burn in (around 30 80 hours), but I would not characterize the sound as harsh or grating on initial start up.
