Using programing (C) precedence rules, we have:
6-(1x0)+(2/2)
(6 - 0) + 1
7
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_operationsAccording to order of operations: P E M D O S...the multiplication and division must be done first. 1 x 0 is zero. 2 divided by 2 = 1.
That leaves 6 - 0 + 1. Which equals 7.
+1, There are "conventions" concerning the order in which one can perform certain operations in mathematics. If you choose to violate them, as a couple of you have done in other posts by "pretending" this is a sequential series that should be done with a calculator (not allowed) you get 1. But that is NOT correct!
7 is right. Go get out your SAT prep books and look it up. Or ask any middle school Math teacher.
And...42 is the correct answer for "everything" else!
Of course, Rick has an acceptable "alternative" above that wins hands "all around"!

7 is it. There are no other answers. Math is Math is Math! With artificially placing the parenthesis, that are not in the originally presented problem you can get the number one. When I used to do that I also got one answer from my teachers ...."WRONG".integrated w/DAC module Gryphon Diablo 300

There's a reason I posted this other than to just mess with your brains (well maybe a little) and that is to illustrate one of my pet peeves about mathematics. That being the ability of not having to use Parentheses or Brackets and even operators to expressly set the order of operations and what those operations are. A kind of shorthand for writing equations I guess.
For those of you who answered 7 using the PEMDAS order of operation your are correct.
But there are just a couple little problems with using acronyms like PEMDAS, BEDMAS, BODMAS, BIDMAS, BOMDAS and PEMA (Note: They all means the same thing! It doesn't really matter how you remember it, just so long as you get it right.) that being the ability to not use Parentheses/Brackets and even operators because they may be implied or assumed and it's also assumed that the user is aware of or can remember that multiplication and division are of equal precedence and that addition and subtraction also have the same precedence. Let me illustrate using the same equation 6-1*0+2/2, sticking to the strict interpretation of PEMDAS which is
"Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction"
Using Parentheses for clarity the equation looks like this 6 - (1 * 0) + (2 / 2) and works out like this
Multiplication, 6 - (1 * 0) + (2 / 2) = 6 - (0) + (2 / 2)
Division, 6 - (0) + (2 / 2) = 6 - (0 + 1)
Addition, 6 - (0 + 1) = 6 - 1
Subtraction, 6 - 1 = 5
Well we know that 5 is wrong because we forgot that multiplication and division are of equal precedence and that addition and subtraction have the same precedence. And the fact that it is assumed but rarely stated that multiplication and division also addition and subtraction are computed left to right. For clarity and to remove any ambiguity in the order of operations the equation should have been written like this:
(6 - (1 * 0)) + (2 / 2) and works out like this
Multiplication, (6 - (1 * 0)) + (2 / 2) = (6 - 0) + (2 / 2)
Division, (6 - 0) + (2 / 2) = (6 - 0) + 1
Subtraction, (6 - 0) + 1 = 6 + 1, (Note: The Parentheses force Subtraction before Addition)
Addition, 6 + 1 = 7
Here's a couple examples that shows how thing's can go wrong if you forget the left to right rule. Using any of the above rules in the order "multiplication first, division second" and "addition first, subtraction second" would also give the wrong answers to the problems
10 - 3 + 2 = 5
10 / 3 * 2 = 1.666666666666667
The correct answers are 9 and 6.666666666666667 (and not 5 and 1.666666666666667, which we get when we do addition first and then subtraction, and multiplication first and then division second).
Again for clarity and to remove any ambiguity in the order of operations the equations should have been written like this:
(10 - 3) + 2 = 9
(10 / 3) * 3 = 6.666666666666667
Oh and don't even get me started on Mathematical notation, That also allows for a fair amount of assumptions. Ok one example:
5 + 3 . 5 + 2 = 22 Wrong
Note: The dot between the 3 and 5 should be a heavy dot indicating multiplication and that the operations to the left and right of the dot should be carried out first, It can also be written as (5 + 3)(5 + 2), with the multiplication operator being dropped because it is implied or assumed by the equation it's self.
Again for clarity and to remove any ambiguity in the order of operations the equation should have been written like this:
(5 + 3) * (5 + 2) = 56 Correct
We should all know by now that assumptions are the mother of all screw-ups.
The problem with using acronyms and different symbols for the same operator is that unless you know all the rules and exceptions off the top of your head most complex equations can be confusing and or ambiguous at best. No wonder why so many people have problems with math.
I know I'm nick picking but as the equations become more complex this kind of crap drives me nuts sometimes. This may be fine for mathematicians who do this stuff day in and day out but for those of us who like to dabble in it from time to time it can be a pain in the butt when it's been awhile and you have to spend a day or two going over algebra books to refresh your memory on how this all works.
