The Expedit family is dandy for records - there are a variety of sizes; mine are 4 x 4; they go up to 5 x 5 and down to 1 x 4 (if memory serves...?).

I use the 2x4. Don't know if it's completely necessary, but I put small metal L-shaped supporting brackets on the shelves where they connect to the outside vertical 'board'. The center one is supported on each level, but the outside of each shelf just attaches to the exterior board. Lp's can get heavy real quick in a small space when stacked vertically, and I have seen a few disaster photo's from Expidit units. So I just added a little support as precaution.

I looked at the IKEA link - the $40 version is 2 x 2 and would be, I'd opine, ideal for a small record collection!

    The 1 x 4 is actually a 1 x 5. D'oh.

Adding additional support is probably cheap insurance. Mine are both 'as is' and no disasters -- to date :-O

I too just went to using Ikea Expedit units. Just couldn't ignore the convenience/cost ratio. I would agree that just a little reinforcement of the corners and/or wall tethering is probably a good idea, especially on the larger units. I'm using a 4x2 on it's side, and a 1x5 on end. I also added the stainless steel legs just to make the bottom shelf a little easier to get to.

Now all you need to do is check out a fine old REVOX reel to reel and see how that sounds!

    cmy330go,

    Wow, nice room!

You obviously havn't had problems, but I think on it's side, those middle shelves aren't as reinforced, due to the way the boards fit during setup...am I correct? But, like you said, probably more of an issue on larger units.

    Thanks.

Actually the 2x4 and 1x5 units use 8 pegs in each shelf. Unlike the 4x4 and 5x5 units that use 4 in vertical sections and 8 in the horizontal sections. Plus the thick outer walls on this whole series are pretty stinking solid. I would imagine if I had only put 4 legs on that unit it would probably eventually bow in the center, but doubt I'll have any trouble with the extra set of legs in the center.

You just gotta make your own :-)

Mine's a half-track, high-speed conversion by Charles "Stellavox" King of NY...
Not all that much of a looker, but performance is excellent. Actually there are very high quality (e.g., first gen copy) tapes out there; just a little hard to find...

    there's always 8-track :-)

    I agree.

I would look at the spin clean again... I have one now and it's great.

Otherwise the mofi brush and fluid is very good for lite duty maintenance.

Got my spin clean from eBay for just about $60. Seller was; "blowitoutahere". Showed up quick and at a great price.

Travis here is how it is looking in the office (excuse the mess, lots of stuff going into the nursery is in here while we finish things off in there). The Yamaha works with no issues so far. The headphone jack musta just been having issues as the speakers are working great with the setup.

I do hear a HUGE difference in quality between these two setups and I am not sure what it is (Yamaha, speaker cables, speakers) but man it doesnt sound as good as the LSi's. Makes me realize how nice my setup is downstairs

Yes I am aware the speaker setup is far from ideal but I dont care enough to really mess with it at this point. I might kick the speakers in bit but since I am mostly doing nearfield listening the sound will be less than ideal regardless. The only possible option would be to flip everything around and put the setup directly behind me with the speakers flanking the entertainment center, but that puts the speakers on the shared wall with the nursery and I dont see that working out too well for me....

Glad you're enjoying it. Now for the printer- get it off the Yamaha or at least put a couple paperback books under it so it can breath... giving you a hard time. I'm sure there is a big differance between the two systems. All links in the chain matter. I put the Adcom GTP 450 pre in my system and stopped using the onkyo as a pre while demoing these 703's wow....big differance. Getting ready to call the guy about the NAD.

Dan, that ikea 2x2 wont fit your gear. I've looked at it several times and actually have several ikea pieces of similar finish in my theater room. I wish it worked, but it wont. They should have some entertainment centers in a similar finish if you end up wanting to go that route though.

That looks a lot like my Technics spinner. What model is that? I've got the original SL-1300.

Is it not deep enough? I was going to use the inside for storage and put the system on top of it.

    It's a technics SL-B3 turntable

Lol I know. I will put some spacers in there but I am not sure of that setup is final. I might move the printer elsewhere. This was just a get it hooked up and enjoy setup.

I got the volume knob up to all of 4 and it's only got 20 wpc max so it can't run that hot.

I am convinced the issues I am having are totally due to the Yamaha's amp section. Its cut the left channel out a couple times on me, just like it was doing with the headphones I was using. I think this integrateds time on this earth is quickly coming to a close.

Travis, I put some spacers up for you

I'm assuming you've done the DeOx thing, etc.? It is possible that your phono pre-amp is on its way out, but I have units a lot older than that that do not have that problem. In fact the only phono section I know to be problematic (in the collection) is in the "vaunted" Sansui AU-517 which is built like a tank? Go figure?

It's also possible the repair might be a simple one.

chn: it did the same thing to me in a different input using my iPhone as a source which is why I stopped using it at work.

I will deoxit it again and won't just chuck it since it was my dads but it will go into storage for a bit.
