Whinning noise damage speakers?

I need some help. Does anyone know if the whinning noise caused by my amps capacitors discharging after being turned off damage my speakers? Thanks in advance.

Shut the pre amp off first, amp last, so no sound hits the speakers. Might be time to do some refurbishing on that amp.

Absolutely! Sounds like a equipment power supply! Whining during operation or just at shutoff with no input signal?

Thats exactly how I turn off my system. The pre first, then the amp goes off. It just came back from the shop. Had to replace the biases to fix a heat issue. It may have to go back.

So, will the whinning cause damage to my speakers?

yes this noise can cause a BIG problems with the tweeters and the crossovers, :eek: and the rest, may be not,:rolleyes: BUT.... actually fix this amplifier, it is not a good idea to use this device,

Sounds like someting maybe out of phase. Is the whinning very loud?

I get that to but mine is when the sub amp gets turned on LOL sure its not from a significant other ?
Someone will have a awnser just make sure you turn it off as tonyB suggests or look into a panamax a/c switch box .
regardless if its louder than talking volume you will damage your tweeters ( fix asap )

The amp was recently repaired. Had all the 3 bias and 3 diodes replaced to fix a heating issue. I took it back to the shop and was told that there was nothing wrong with it. Turns out this only happens with my B&W speakers, no noise when my Polks, Energy or Paradigm speakers are hook up. Very weird. Anyone have any similar issues?

That sounds like power supply caps discharging, maybe that amp has not output relays to "mask" thumps at turn off/on. this is normal for many amps (design), you will hear it louder with speakers with high SPL.
I had a few amps with this thumps noise too, I remember one of them was an Adcom. Check amp if it has output relays/soft start and if it does not...probably it is normal. if thumps are not too loud, I would not worry too much. Just get a digital meter and check voltages at the speaker terminals to know how much voltage are those thumps. also check for dc offset!!!

PS:Turn off source first. other way you will hear the music fading out with "static" sound

I agree, it might be the caps discharging. I also turn off the pre/receiver first, then the amp.

The odd thing is that I only hear the whine from the B&W's, not the other brands of speakers I have tried. Why is it just the B&W's that whine?

The standard pro-audio turn-on / turn-off procedures are:

Turn-on: First mic pre-amps then processors and console and finally power amps.

Turn-off: First power amps then processors and console and finally mic pre-amps.
