There is little you can do about these problems. Everything starts with the recording and it's quality. Shame but true. Many recordings where mastered for car stereo's , portable players and small radio's. Why? Beats the hell out of me. I think all recordngs should be released as they are , not modified in any way to please the peoples choices in replay systems. better replay system yield better sounding music period.

With that being said , using a eq is a good idea but can be an endless tweaking nightmare. As you change disc's , you have to change eq settings , write down the setting for each disc etc.
As said in this thread , finding the original cd would be the best thing to do. Or see if these old recordings you love are released on Vinyl and get into a nice quality player. You might be much better off going this route as most Vinyl original recording transfers are damn good. When CD came out , the Industry did a pretty poor job transferring music . Years later it was pretty much perfected.
Another idea would be to figure out how these recordings where originally released. If they where released on 8 track , not a bad idea to pick up a 8 track player. Then you can avoid the crappy CD remix transfer and actually enjoy the music you love.

Finding High Rez downloads is another great idea. Hopefully if you find what you are looking for , it was ripped from the master recordings .

My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time.
