What do you mean different versions?

There's all sorts of docks available, bit perfect, some with built in dacs some without, at any price level you can think of too.
A hundred buck dock, may be some improvement but I wouldn't expect miracles. Convert your files to lossless, even apple lossless, only takes a click of the mouse. Play into a decent dac then into your pre. You'll see a stark improvement. Some cheap dacs to look at, Audio-gd, Cambridge, Grant Fidelity tube dac, Musical fidelity, Keces, PS Audio, and the list can go on. Used they range from under 200 to around 400 and would be a big step up over a dock.
    HT SYSTEM-
    Sony 850c 4k
    Pioneer elite vhx 21
    Sony 4k BRP
    SVS SB-2000
    Polk Sig. 20's
    Polk FX500 surrounds

    Cables-
    Acoustic zen Satori speaker cables
    Acoustic zen Matrix 2 IC's
    Wireworld eclipse 7 ic's
    Audio metallurgy ga-o digital cable

    Kitchen

    Sonos zp90
    Grant Fidelity tube dac
    B&k 1420
    lsi 9's

This may be the best way to attempt better quality sound from an ipod.

Well people I got the Pure i-20 on friday. Simple to hook up and the results were great. I can now hear the vocals more clearly than ever before. The whole overall image has also improved. I have the ipad 3 and the amps maxed out on the gains and am controlling the volume via the preamp which also lets me tweak the highs and lows.
    Now comes the best part all (10 months later);
