A must try Belgian is St. Bernardus Abt 12. How does everyone drink their Belgian style beers? Do you stir the bottom portion of the bottle and pour the dregs in your glass or pour the dregs in a smaller glass and drink separately? Or not drink them at all?

    St. Bernardus Abt 12
Quite good...a little on the "bitey" side but still good.
When it comes to sediment, pour that right into the same glass. Preferably on the head for me... no pun intended.

    Lambics!!!!!!! Wth??........why?!?

I should have probably mentioned unflavored lambics. Lambics are frequently used as a base for flavored beers that taste almost like sodas, but an unflavored lambic is an entirely different animal. Even non-beer drinkers can down a Lindeman's Framboise like it was Cherry Coke, but not so with say a Girardin Oude Lambik.

The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is very good. NABC (my local haunt) has it on tap right now. The bitier the better!

I'm a huge ST. Bernardus fan. I drink mine out of a ST. Bernardus Beer Glass.

Well I'm not usually into porters and stouts (or as I call them, motor oil) but that Left Hand one was pretty good. Still not something I would drink on a regular basis, however. I've not met a chocolate stout I could stomach. I've had the Young's and the Rogue. Absolute worst however is a coffee stout, IMO. Dear lord. Like sucking on a used coffee filter.

Every now and then I'll try something I know I probably won't like if it sounds interesting enough--that's how I tried the Left Hand stuff. I suspect that a milk stout is the only kind I would like. Most days I prefer to stick to my Belgians, pale ales and lambics. I'm a hophead.
I got some beers for you to try. I think they will be right up your alley. Saranac will come out with a Winter 12 pack mix. It has a Vanilla Stout and and a Chocolate Lager which both are on the lighter side and super very tasty.
Coffee Stouts I'm thinking you have not had a good one. Are you a coffee lover? Or at least a drinker? If so then check out Troegs Javahead , it's an amazingly well balanced well made coffee stout. It's my very favorite of the kind. I chuckle everytime I get it , it's that good.
For Belgians I have one I found thats not as expensive as ST. Bernardus. It's Riverhorse Belgian Freeze. Man is this a well balanced brew. It's got the perfect blend of Belgian Ale taste with a nice soft clean finish. I'm so impressed with this brew and it's easier on the wallet. Give it a try.

I generally know what I like already, and stouts/porters just ain't it. The Left Hand Milk Stout was a bit of an anomaly that has yet to have been reproduced with any other stout or porter. I figured if I liked it, then it must be pretty good, since I don't like stouts. Then again that may just mean it's horrible as a stout. ;) But really I think what it was is that I was enjoying it as a drink, but not as a beer. It's not something I would drink when I wanted a beer, but it's something I could enjoy as say an after-dinner dessert. Probably would be the same with the vanilla/chocolate stuff if I liked them. The coffee stout is probably a lost cause since I don't drink coffee.

But when/if NABC puts any of these on tap, I'll give them a sample out of curiosity. If I just haven't had a decent flavored stout yet, then I need to try a good one. But I have to say, I've tried many, so I think the case is probably still that I just don't like stouts.

I don't think I've seen any Riverhorse stuff before, so I'm not sure if my pub gets that brand. I'll keep an eye out for it though.

Closed the book on pumpkin ales this weekend. Finished with a Wolaver's, a little too much spice and not enough pumpkin flavor for my taste. Their oatmeal stout is very good. Time to hit the stouts and porters till November when Anchor Christmas Ale is available.

Finishing the night with a Sammy Adams Cinder Bock and Chelsea Lately. Nice thick malty mouth feel and a bit of heat from the 9.4
ABV. No need for an aggressive pour to get a nice head from this brew unlike the oktoberfests and pumpkin beers.

I posted about this beer about 2 years ago now but I will recommend it again. It a Belgian Saison by Dupont. It's a farmhouse ale and is absolutely phenominal. I recommend the "organic" version of this ale even more. It's called Foret and is by the Dupont brewery and is equivalent to the Saison, but is brewed using organic ingrediants. the flavor is slightly better than the normal Saison. Either one is a must have however. Also, the Rogue Portlans State IPA is very nice and I thought I would throw it in.

You are right about that. So many beers so little time.
I'll keep sampling the Octoberfests, the Pumpkins are starting to dry up. Dogfishhead Punk was gone after three weeks around here. I helped my son in law start a spiced pumpkin at the beginning of September which he sampled last weekend. Said it could sit for another week. He better save me a few bottles or that kegging system might not be under the Christmas tree this year.
This week I'll ramp up my squirreling habit and put a few 'fests away for later in winter.

    Cheers

That pic makes my mouth water! I always buy at least two cases of the Christmas Ale as soon as it hits the distributor.
Who has tried the Tommyknocker Small Patch Pumpkin Harvest Ale? I didn't sample that one.

I've been resisting staying out of this thread long enough as I am a micro/craft beer junky as well. I have been working in the New Orleans area for the last 10 months and there is a surprisingly vibrant microbrew seen here. I've known about Abita for a long time (the brewhouse is 20 minutes from where I'm working) but there is a surprising number of other microbreweries like NOLA, Lazy Magnolia, Covington, Heinerbrau, Tin Roof, etc. all producing quality brews. They produce some good brews around here, but I miss some of the bars at home with the huge variety of brews on tap. See the attached photo for one of my favorites.

Headrott I absolutely love those Dupont Saisons. I'm a big fan of just about any of the Belgian or French Farmhouse ales (and Belgian brews in general, especially trappist ales). Ummm, I wish I was sipping on a cold brew right now.....Is that a problem at 10:00 AM?
