Interesting that the OP would be abandoning vinyl just as I'm getting back into it. And having fun doing so.

I heart that system of yours with the Quads. I know you said it wasn't 100% when we were down, but damn, that was nice.

I love listening to the vinyls, but time being as tight as it is for me, I'm trying to narrow my focus.

I hear you man....to be honest, to do it all over again, I probably would just pursue hi-rez digital. Press on and don't look back!

Yeah, I had a gremlin in one of the amps and two panels in one of the Quads were failing. MUCH better now.

I am listening to Analog Man by Joe Walsh. I am listening to a high rez flac file. Analog Man sounds damn good in digital!

Well, to me..i think vinyl probably sounds better. But that's just me. but even at that i have spent a good 1K on a tube CD player and rolled tubes in it. A good recorded NEW CD..well EQ'd sounds great and is hard to beat. I have put my TT in the closet, along with well over 600 albums. At this point i play nothing but CD's..yes it's easy, you don't have to do anything, and most of them play pretty well.

Where this all falls short is OLD bands, OLD music. That you can't find, or if you do, dose not come close.

These old band, "remastered" cd's..for the most part are horrible. They are the worst things i have heard. They sound nothing like the original vinyl pressing..at all. I have the old vinyl..dose not sound the same at all.

So you either deal with the crap sound of the "remastered" cd's....or you bite the bullet...pull out the TT..throw $500 at a new cartridge, cleaning stuff an what not, go back to the "cleaning" thing, but then enjoy the original recording.

There is no right or wrong on this, and again it's all in the person's ear that is listening to it. Nothing more.

To the OP (on his original statement)...on this, i have 2 young kids and i should not use my TT, because "little fingers" are going to mess stuff up.

Now really dude, your kidding me right? I had 3 kids since 1975, with nothing but TT's and vinyl. Now really, your TT sits at the top of your rack..no place close to were they could get there hands on. When they get big enough to reach that..they should have been told and know better.

If you just don't want to bother cleaning stuff off, would rather throw in a CD...because it easy and you don't want to be bothered...thats another story.

Your speakers on the other hand.....if there floor standers..those you better have the good grills on and hope they don't push toys thru them...LOL

Been there done that. Your TT is the least of your problems..your speakers are..ground zero..If there floor standers. Just to let you know...LOL

About 35 years ago is when my two oldest daughters were at that age, when daddy was playing records, they learned what the word "no" was all about.

I understand with little ones the desire to move away from vinyl. But they won't be little forever. I don't know how much vinyl you have but I will tell you that down the line you will regret selling it off. Find a way, any way to store the vinyl and TT. To this day I regret selling off my vinyl in 1985 (virtually all the albums were played less than 5 times) and had the "Last" treatment all to jump into the cd world.

I think I've figured out what I'm going to do. Gonna hold on to the software and liquidate the hardware. So hard to track down all those records again and, like Rich put it, it's like getting rid of old friends. May thin the heard a bit, but nothing drastic.

The hardware I can replace when the time comes, although the gear is solid and produces some great sound, none of it is irreplaceable. It'll free up some space in the rack as well as add some money to the audio fund.

I have a fun compromise on vinyl - and old KLH model 20. I like the look of it, and my wife, very importantly, likes the look of it along with the fun clockwork of it all. My dad bought it new, so it also has sentimental value. I had it all refurbished and upgraded all the caps. It's fun to listen to old records that were recorded in analog on analog. For ease of use, practicality, a lack of pops and cracks, lack of record flipping, longer playing time, multichannel audio and so many more digital is the way to go.

I see it like this, I pursue audiophile quality via digital means because the last part of any recording that is analog anymore is the instruments, and even there most are digital or processed or filtered. Almost all master copies of music are now digital. Heck, they are mostly recorded, mixed, and edited all on Apple computers, super hipster scarf-wearing digital. If you are a new music guy like myself, then a lot of stuff isn't even put out in any hard copy, it's just a download. I get lossless whenever it's available, but I don't refuse to listen to music that isn't lossless. If I did, then I'd not be listening to a lot of new stuff by new acts because they are just trying to get their stuff out to the market in any fashion. It would be silly to convert a digital recording studio process back to an analog format that is played by grooves on vinyl.

Also, I have hair. Some of these hairs end up on my records. To really have great fidelity with records one should own no pets, and either have no family or insist that everyone remain completely hairless. And stop shedding skin cells. Oh, and live in the desert in a room with positive pressure ventilation. Did you know that 90% of dust is dead skin? Whoa that's gross.

The turntable is sold. It's headed to a good home, but still kinda melancholy about it. The cleaning equipment has also found homes
    with some solid Polkies.

Funny thing, though. Just about as soon as the TT was sold, the network with my music went down. Still haven't figured it out. Karma?

Thinking about getting out of the analog realm altogether to concentrate on digital. It doesn't suit my lifestyle as much anymore. Love the sound, but with two kids under 3 years I dont find as much time to listen. The equipment also tends to attract little curious fingers more then anything else in our house.

Anyone else given it up? Regrets, thoughts?

Not going to waste anyone's time with my thoughts about the analogue / digital war, but I do want to applaud your efforts to sacrifice things that keep you from giving your attention to your most important responsibility, your family. I had to make this same call many years ago. Found myself a bit testy when one of my toddlers interrupted my listening session & knew right then & there that I had to make a change. From that point on, listening sessions were almost non-existant, but rich time with family was so much more important, valuable & rewarding. Painful? Yes. Worth it? You betcha.
