I currently have a Denon AVR 1513 with 2 TSI400s and a CSI5. Is the receiver DoIng my speakers justice? I paid 280 for the receiver @ Frys and im within the window to return it and possibly get something a little better. Except I dunno what receiver to get. I know they have Harmon Kardons, Yamaha , Sony, Pioneers, and so on but for 100 dollars more can I actually get something better? Thanks!

well your speakers are not that special. A car radio will 'do them justice'.
That said, they will sound better on mid and high volumes with a better receiver.

    check www.accessories4less.com

look for receivers that are 60% off and grab one with no fear. I have bought several things from them already and the stuff is always brand new and i have been satisfied with their customer service too.

Denon is a good brand. I'd say you'll be happy with this receiver. See if you can't get a nice powered subwoofer to go along with this. When set right, it will take some of the strain off your receiver and you'll have a nice, inexpensive, home theatre set up.

Good advice......but in the long run, save your pennies, that receiver won't do you any good down the road when you want to upgrade speakers.

Ok ok...im not quite up to par with some of you guys yet but I understand. I'm just trying get a decent setup going. I have a pioneer vsx-921 K getting fixed. Would I be better off using that one or the Denon? If the TSI400s aren't special what is something that is ? Or the beginning of it at least.

Some guys here are, how can we say it, "not" well-versed in the social graces! There is nothing wrong with starting with an entry level Denon and some TSI-400s, in that price range you won't do much better and they'll sound just fine!

What you need to think about, at this point is (as PFB suggests above), a nice sub so you can take some low frequency duty away from the Denon and free it up to better power the towers. Set your crossovers to 80 hz and work from there.

Although the CSi-5 is not a perfect match for TSI series speakers, it is one bad A$$ center which will serve you well!

Do you have a budget in mind?

Denon and almost any Polk sound good together!

    Enjoy!

Are the speakers (in the link) better than the TSI400s I have? There's a pair someone locally is selling for 250 for the pair. Sounds like a steal. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also, would it compliment by CSI 5 center channel or well things be out of whack?

A psw505 would be a good sub if your going with Polk. I've also heard great reviews on the BIC F12. Both would fit in your 300 budget range easily.

You could always get a pair of RTi's that way your Left, Center, and Right speaker would all match.

The Polk DSWPRO 550wi (wireless-ready) 10" sub is leagues ahead of either the PSW505 or the BIC F12, IMHO, for both music and HT.

It goes on sale at Newegg often (just go to the website and request a Price Alert on it) for right around the $300 price point - MSRP of $500 and usual Newegg price of $446. I got one of mine shipped for $280 and the other for $300 (with FREE Polk UltraFit 3000 In-Ear Canal Headphones - $100 at Best Buy or from Polk)!!

In fact, I got rid of my Polk DSW MicroPRO 2000 and 3000 subs 'cuz I was more impressed with the 550wi.

The 505 is a powered subwoofer, which means that it has its own amplifier and relies on the receiver for the signal only. So, yes, the receiver should handle the subwoofer no problem.

Just a quick word of advice.....you're gonna want to set the speakers to "small" after you hook up your sub. It's up to you if you want the main speakers still set to "large," but especially when considering that the TSi400s have 5.25" speakers, I'd cross them over at 80hz or somewhere thereabouts.

So, when you have the mains set to "small," the receiver should automatically set the subwoofer crossover point at wherever you set the mains' crossover point. Then you want to turn the crossover dial on the subwoofer all the way up -- to like 250 hz or something like that I guess. From my experiences, using both the receiver and the subwoofer amp crossovers at the same time makes the bass sound kind of peaky. Maxing the xover dial on the sub amp makes it so that the receiver's crossover is taking over.

You paid way too much for that receiver, IMO. Any Denon receiver above the 1513 has the Audyssey auto-calibration, which is hands-down worth a few extra bucks. The 1613 is not much more expensive than the 1513 and it has the Audyssey calibration system.

Someone already mentioned A4L in this thread. $380 goes a long way on that website.

Thanks for the help and tips. I'll makes sure to change those settings.

@Sponger...I only paid 270 for the reciver which maybe wasn't the best deal ever but a fair price. I might go back and return it since I am in the 30 day window for the next best thing but I just spent money on the sub. We'll see...thanks though. I learn more and more as I read several of the post you guys make. Thanks.

This week there weren't any deals at Fry's on Denon receivers. But, I know that just about every other week the 1913 goes on sale for $349 if I'm not mistaken. Earlier this year I bought a 1612 from Fry's for $220. The 16XX and up (i.e., 17XX, 19XX, etc.) all have the auto-calibration. I could not imagine setting up my HT without it. I would be surprised if next Friday's Fry's ad didn't have either the 1713 or the 1913 within your budget. Even the 1613 would be worth it because it at least has the Audyssey auto-calibration.
