Buying a new TV, 55 inch im looking at, just looking for opinions, pros or cons between plasma and LCD.

    Plasma has better blacks but also isnt as bright as LCD (which tend to do well in VERY BRIGHT rooms). Plasma has better off axis viewing angles than LCD. Plasmas normally are cheaper per inch from 55" over.

    LCDs work great in a bright room where your planning on keeping windows open 24/7, but IMHO Plasma is just overall better if you can deal with a bit of glare.

    Check out my setup in the system showcase of my 60" Plasma. I have a window right next to it we normally have open and get some glare from the window behind the couch, but at night its normally not an issue.

    LCD Blacks are better I think... both are good but when they go bad time for a new one.. unlike DLP'S just change the bulb
    and it like buying a new TV.

    I have a 60" DLP HD and Love it.. not many people like changing bulbs every 3 years. DLP's Prices are better. I only paid $1500 brand New. I think LCD or LED 60" would cost close to $4,000 if not more. sure you could always buy used. but come to think of it Prices are coming down.

    My last purchase was a plasma. I went to a couple of electronics stores, and just started looking at the sets. Different stores use different lighting levels, but they all seem to use factory pre sets, so it's a fairly even comparison. We all have different tastes, and if you're worried about glare from a window, shine a flashlight at an angle towards a screen to simulate it a little. Did that also.

    In general dollar for dollar Plasma's do better blacks. With a LCD or LED( LED is still a LCD) the liquid crystals have to block the back lighting. The crystals in the LCD still allow a little light through. This causes lighter colord blacks, or even a real dark blue / purple black color. The high end LED's probably do just as good as a plasma because they have local diming. So when the TV needs to produce black in a certian area it can shut the LED's off behind that area. That way the crystals dont have to try to block a bright white light.

    Your going to pay a lot more for a LED with local dimming vs. a plasma.

    Yup, my dad has one of those TV's with a AWESOME 120hz refresh rate. I tried to play Halo online 2 times couldnt do it. Went through the entire manual and couldnt figure out how to make it actually look right. Even my wife said with movies they look too cartoonish to be worth the money.

    I have a really nice Samsung LED LCD and it is a really good set

    But my TV room is very bright and a plasma would not work well in there

    The one thing that you need to consider is how much light the room gets

    If it gets alot of natural light during the day a plasma will suck with all the bright light

    A plasma in the right room definitely offers the best picture by far over a LED LCD, it is a much warmer life like picture from what I have experienced with flat panels

    Plasma by far has the better picture, more natural looking. They do look better in a darker room but not bad in a lighter room. The newer ones are getting better in lighter rooms. You have a wider angle of view then an LCD. I'd go with a VT50 Panasonic.

    I would be totally cool with the ST series from this year. The ST from this year has the panel as good as the GT from last year. The GT from this year has a panel as good as the VT from last year.

    I am rocking the ST60 from last year and have no regrets besides I couldnt find the extra 200 for the ST65 :biggrin:.

    Just asking here.I was once told that Plasma does not have same playing life time of a lcd.If one was an avid tv watcher this could
    be problematic if this is true. Again this is not an opinion and could be just plane misinformed.

    Costco had a stupidly cheap 1080p Panasonic plasma on display last weekend. Looked like it was in the 50"-60" size range (not sure), for less than $700.00 That's about one half of what I had to pay approximately three years ago. Costco also provides an additional year of warr. coverage. Edit: Looks like it's a 50", on sale thru 9/29 for $599.00 + $100 if shipped. That's cheap 1080p viewing !:eek:

    So if you watched your tv 24 hrs a day it would hit its half life in 11 years, or if you just watched it 12hrs it would be 22 years. I imagine I would get a new tv due to technology upgrades before I hit the half life.

    Plasma for a dark room and lcd for a lit up room. Some of the higher end plasma TV's have a pretty decent anti glare on them compared to some of the cheaper counterparts they are still prone to showing light cracks in the room. My personal preference is my plasma in the media room compared to the LCD in the main part of the house.

    I don't know if anyone else has this problem when viewing movies on an LCD, but when I see a movie special fx/CGI, it just looks weird to me. I remember over a year ago, I was at Best Buy just looking around. They had Night At the Museum playing on a bunch of sets. It was so distracting seeing Ben Stiller supposedly looking at some computer generated character. Like the angle was off. He wasn't looking in the spot where the character was supposed to be. The plasma sets don't have that problem when I view them.

    I'm still a huge plasma guy. Love my VT and only thing I would change is going bigger. The Panny ST's are very nice and so are the GT's.

    LCD/LED still don't have the right look to me.

    OLED that will be different, however street price on the 55" is stated to be around 7-8K so not really what most people will be getting right away

    Have a new Panny 65" Plasma, and love it. There is a large picture window 90 degrees from it with no problem. This set replaced a SONY 55". Night and day diff. Love the new set.

    I've had a 50in Toshiba for well over 5 yrs now and have never had a problem with it. I think the picture is more true to life than LCD. The only negative is the glare in a sunny room

    My led-lcd puts off a lot less heat than the plasmas do, that's one of my favorite things about it. In a small room, it's good to take that into consideration as well.

    Gotta go with the plasma here. Having had LCD's before, the plasma is heads & shoulders better in my opinion.

    Yep that is the cartoon affect.
