home theater speakers for my bed room.

Ok i ordered this home theater system,
Yamaha YHT-695BL $490

it comes on monday, however my friend is telling me to return it and buy a receiver separate and order polk speakers instead.

he also says a 2.1 or 3.1 would suit me better for the way my bedroom is vs's a 5.1.

and just going 3.0 instead of 3.1? heard the 70's had good bass without a sub but im not sure if the recievers im looking at can even power them properly, ONKYO TX-NR616 & YAMAHA RX-V473BL




system will only be used for movies, tv shows no music, just seeing what you think would be best considering my room layout with 3.0, 3.1 and 5.1 choices. thanks

For your room size, I would go for a good bookshelfs and a subwoofer. Maybe instead of monitor series, go with RTiA1, they are currently on sale at newegg with free headphones - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882290152
For the subwoofer, go with the PSW505, if you want to stick with polkaudio or I recommend getting BIC F12 for little less.

You can pull anything off if you want to. I had a 7.1 and 7.2 set up in a bedroom. Of course it wasn't ideal, but it can be done and still sound decent.

That said, the 70's are a good choice, but to get the bass you're talking about, they need power. I demoed mine for sale using an XPA-2, 300w power amp. The buyer said he didn't feel bad not having a sub right away because of the bass they were putting out. I told him be aware, if they didn't sound the same in his set up, that the power had a lot to do with it.

It all depends on what you're after, some are happy with HTIB's, others only through separates.

I tried both, the HTIB in my opinion is worthless for the true "Home Theater" feel.

With separates, you're not limited to what you can implement, providing your AVR is equipped with pre-outs. That's important when you want to start adding extra power.

Your choice for a 3.0 is a good place to start, I'd just look at something bigger for the AVR for down the road, like the 709.

I think max i would spend on a receiver is $400, only reason i was looking at $500 yamaha one is because it comes with $100 giftcard i could use towards my center.

I dont ever plan on adding a amp so if thats going to be a problem then let me know, im not sure what im going for, ive never had a home theater and dont want to start off with a crappy one then need to upgrade later.

I'd at least go with 3.1. Since you're doing mostly movies, most of your dialogue comes through the center channel.

Keep it small, get your 616 and if you can get the RTiA1's (or 3's) and a CSiA4, you'll have a killer little bedroom set up.

BTW, welcome to the forum, we'll get your money spent faster than a speeding bullet :biggrin:

this must be the best speaker deal in all of audio world right now ( ). I drove to frikkin Ohio to buy mine, because i was told from Klipsch alone that those are discontinued! Sound more powerful and more pleasant than the A7s even just fed from a receiver. And the looks! - i wish i could take them to the club with me.

I actually think that you will be fine with 2.1 in your bedroom. I just went from 2.1 (NHT sb1s and an AV123 x-sub) to 3.1 adding back in an old def tech center and it maybe helps with some movies. I would say, however, that it is more important to get solid bookies and a solid sub than a center in your application. If you have the extra coin, sure get a center. But you don't really need it.

I think that those rti6's and the psw505 would be an excellent bedroom setup.

And no, you will not be satisfied with the bass the m70s put out without a pretty powerful external amp. I talked my buddy into getting them without a sub until he can save up for one and I think he's been a little disappointed (he's just powering them with a pioneer vsx 1021). The bass is pretty weak...

@skuzzzzy - yes, if I were you I would invest in less speakers but higher quality. Specially if you don't want to buy extra amplification and just power everything through A/V receiver. For me high quality 2.1 is much better then underpowered lower quality 5.1 for anything including movies and music.
If you are on budget, try looking for used gear. For $500 you can get good used A/V receiver, but nothing worth looking at new.

I think the most pressing issue is the furniture arrangement in your room. The way it's set up right now is so that you and your g/f have to sort of tilt/turn your heads while watching season 3 of sex and the city on blu ray. You've probably already seen seasons 1 and 2 so many times that you didn't bother to buy them.

I would move the bed over about 5 more feet away from the curtains so that it's centered in the room. Then center the entertainment center to align withe bed. Make a couple of DIY stands for the L/R Rear speakers and find a new place for the workdesk and you have yourself a home theater.

I just want to add one more point, but this time about the Monitor 70s. It's true that they're underpowered without major external amplification. But even when connected to my 75W/chann receiver they project very well, IMO. The bass would be nonexistent were it not for the Audyssey dynamic volume and dynamic EQ. Mine is currently set to dynamic volume "Day," and the bass is definitely there and then some. Of course the sub goes deeper, but I turn it on just to feel like it was worth it to buy it. Mostly I'm watching rock concerts and the Monitor 70s playing at full range more than adequately suffice for that purpose.

Like others have said, a pair of nice bookshelf speakers with a sub pulling low-end duty would probably sound better. But I think the problem with that is that a sub could piss off whoever is next door or in the next room in a bedroom type of situation. I don't know if that's something you would have to deal with or not. You could end up having to switch off the sub and wishing that you had gotten a beefy pair of towers instead. Again, that would be with the Audyssey calibration. From what I've read on other forums, Audyssey does a better job of improving the low-end region in comparison to, say, Yamaha's YPAO. That's of course someone's subjective opinion which I read on an internet forum. It is not empirical data.

Have you considered a wall mount for the tv?

Actually even though everyone suggested regular monitor speakers, i was just too in love with towers to not get them. so i went ahead and ordered the m70's =\.

Would had ordered the m60's but wanted them to match the center for look wise, thought it would look weird to have a center bigger then my fronts and i deffiently wanted the cs2 from reading online how much better it is then the cs1.

went with the yamaha over the onkyo since all the bad reviews (read they fixed the issues with latest firmware update) but didnt want to play the rma game incase they didnt.

comes with $100 giftcard so ill either be buying m30's for the rear or selling the giftcard to get like $80 back, will see if i want 5.1 after i get them if not ill stay 3.1.

And yes i do plan to wallmount a tv but not this one, after i pay off my newegg card for this system i plan to upgrade to a 60" plasma.

Why go with plasma when there is LED? Sure the plasma is more attainable from a financial standpoint, but unless you plan on outfitting a guerilla unit for the apocalypse, a man only needs one AK-47 assault rifle. You could put the other one on gunbroker and then put that money towards a tv that is not only considerably more efficient, but also less likely to suffer screen burn, if at all.

Personally, I would move the dresser to the other side of the bed and then angle it against the corner to give you more space between it and the bed. There would be that unused space behind it as a result of its being angled, but a negligible amount of space at that.

plasma has better PQ then led and no backlight issues.
plasmas dont "burn-in" unless you leave it on the same image for like days.

My ak's are going up in value every year, plasmas go down.

Also....forgot to congratulate you for pulling the trigger on those items. I'm no audiophile, but I think that's money well spent. Being as that you went with a Yammy, I think a YPAO vs Audyssey discussion would be in order. The small room acoustics confronting your home theater might present obstacles in the calibration process. That is, it might call for additional tweaking / fine-tuning.

thanks, i just hope too much money wasnt wasted since i decided to go by how something looked vs's best setup for my room.

I haven't had an issue like that with my LED, but I'll be on the lookout for it. I guess there's always the chance it will happen at some point if not already.

you could play the rma game but it might be a bunch of rmas.
almost any of the newer leds are going to have it unless you have like a 2.5-3k led then chances are better.

issue is mostly because of new edgelit leds models, cheaper to make then local dimming.

In the first place go clean up your room,what are you a child.Your thinking of plunking hundreds of $s w/a room looking like that.Now I know this the Polk side of things but the Klipsch h/d 500 smalls w/ 8 in powered sub would be perfect for a bedroom(comes w/ mounting kit for all).Right now for my h/t I use them w/ a Yamaha rx-v665 which continually clipped until I changed out into fresh air to let the thing breathe and it's been fine ever since at any volume.I also had a piece of cr-p Sharp htib and will never do that again for any room.Sorry for the rant just noticed that your name is Skuzzzzy...

not sure how my room being messy is any concern of yours.

but just for your info,

i cleaned my room and moved tv to infront of my bed so hopefully you'll beable to sleep good tonight and not have to worry about my mess.

cords are still a mess, fixing all cords when i setup home theater.

I'm just curious how you're going to position the mains.

Can you bring your bed away from the window, put your dresser along that wall in front of the window?

Then you'd have room to put the Rt main in the corner by sliding the TV stand over a bit.
