Cracked DVDs from Netflix

Hello
I have occasionally received disks from Netflix that were cracked almost all the way across and obviously unplayable. But I have also received disks with very small cracks radiating from the center hole. These can vary from less than 1/16" to more than 1/4". I usually return them unplayed and request a replacement which Netflix sends promptly. Am I being too cautious? I wonder how much of a crack a DVD or Blu-ray player can tolerate? Will the centrifugal forces at high RPMs (as much as 1530 RPMs) cause these small cracks to propagate and blow apart the DVD inside my Blu-ray player? Has anyone had this happen to them? I assume a disintegrating DVD would destroy the device.
Any thoughts?
Jim

I never pondered those points. It's not like a steel flywheel cutting off your legs at least !

I can't speak for DVDs, but I had a CD crack from the center hole all the way to the edge and somehow still be playable. We're talking clear through- think split washer. Was in a dorm at the time and had to show this to everyone... it was amazing.Gallo Ref 3.1 : Bryston 4b SST : Musical fidelity CD Pre : VPI HW-19
Gallo Ref AV, Frankengallo Ref 3, LC60i : Bryston 9b SST : Meridian 565

To the OP I would NEVER put a cracked disk (no matter how small the crack) in a drive you'd just be asking for trouble.“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” ~ Mark Twain -
Maybe not but have you ever seen one disintegrate at high speed! A whole bunch of little bits of sharp plastic going everywhere very fast, it could take out an eye or two plus cut you up pretty bad, like ER bad.

You have seen this? The drive tray didn't contain the shrapnel?

Yes but not in a drive also I wouldn't count on that plastic door on the drive to contain jack, you can pop those off pretty easy. !! WARNING !! do not try this at home, but if you do DON'T be in the same room. Years ago just for **** and giggles I chucked up a new blank CD in a high speed dremal cranked it up to 20,000 rpm, left the room and plugged it in the CD exploded immediately. I think I was picking bits of plastic out the walls for weeks.“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” ~ Mark Twain
