Brgman's gaskets or Mortite?

Anyone have experience with both? Impressions? I am currently upgrading my 1Cs and would welcome any first-hand knowledge or opinions. For some reason Mortite seems a little messy (if you know what I mean).

Thanks!

I have had great success with Mortite and have found it easy to work with. BUT, if I had both sitting in front of me, I'd go with the gaskets for sure.

Good to hear. Mike was kind enough to sell me gaskets for the SWs, MWs, and tweeters. I was a little concerned that they might degrade over time.

Something thats pretty easy to work with as well is called Armaflex. You can pick it up at home depot and its MUCH easier to use than Mortite and quite cheap as well.

DK did a nice write up on it v. Mortite and the stock gaskets here

I used the Armaflex for my db840 mod on my LSi 15's and it worked great!

I used 1/2" closed-cell foam weather strip from Lowes on my Advents and it was very easy to use and seals very good. One side has adhesive and helps stick on the back of speaker frame.

The best and cheapest gasket material is the rubberised cork gasket material you can get at any automotive parts store. Depending on how thick it is you purchase it in rolls or sheets. this stuff is used for things such as enigne valve cover gaskets where is lasts for year after year. In the enviroment of a speaker gasket you will never have to address this issue again.

Thanks transmaster! Great idea. I just saw your sig. My grandfather used to work at Collins Radio long ago. Unfortunatly, that's all I know. I just wish I knew how to get rid of all of his NOS radios and tubes. OK, he did work for Collins Radio. I made up the part about the NOS gear. Sorry, I can be a bit of a ............ sometimes.

This stuff doesn't have adhesive on one side though, does it? If not, I think it would be more difficult to work with for speaker gaskets. Also, does this come in rolls that are of a useable (eg. 3/8"-1/2") width, or do you need to cut it lengthwise too?

For any of these gasket/sealer products what is the ideal width we should use for 6-1/2" drivers, PRs and tweeters for say, Monitor 10Bs and SDA-2Bs?

Lastly, can someone explain what "brgman gaskets" are?

Are they still available? Any pics out there of these things? It'd be nice to have something that's pre-cut and easy to work with for our specific drivers/PRs/tweets!

I used brgman's gaskets and they worked really well. I have placed two different orders for them. The last order I received were a little thicker than the first. (I knew that when I ordered.) All did a good job of sealing but I found the thicker ones easier to work with.

Actually what you do is cut the gasket ring out of the cork material in one piece, use a hole punch to punch out the holes for the screws. I made my hole punch out of an old 1/4 drive deep well socket, pick one that has the correct diameter and sharpen the edge. When you are finished you have a gasket that is like the original except it is made out of cork. If you want an adhesive surface you can apply that yourself. You can get rubberized cork sheets as thin as a 1/16 of an inch which is just about the thickness of the originals.

You mark out the gasket either by using the driver in question to trace it out, or use a compass scribe to mark it out on the neoprene/cork sheet. You can cut it out with a heavy set of scissors, or you can cut is out with a sharp wood chisel. If you make a template for the gasket them you can cut it out with a very sharp dry wall knife.

THICKNESSES / WIDTHS AVAILABLE FOR CORK & NEOPRENE MEDIUM

    Thickness / Width

    1/32" x 36" sq.
    1/16" x 36" sq.
    1/8" x 36" sq.
    3/16" x 36" sq.
    1/4" x 36" sq,
    5/16" x 36" sq.

Don't forget the other mod's like dynamatting the drivers

I am in the process of refurbishing a pair or Polk Monitor 10B's the XO's have been re-cap'ed and the resistors replaced.
I am now waiting for a pair of MW-6503's to replace the bad set in one of the them. I noted the dynamat on the spiders
    what does that do?
