ok....hooked up the new touch...playing 'the meters'...is it possible for the touch to have more low-end punch than the classic??? that's my immediate impression..highs seem more lively and active, if you will...bass is like my sub is on..my sub is only for the avr, but still:)

It has been stated the Touch has a better dac section and some report a slightly better power supply section than previous versions, even though it's still a switching power supply. I am assuming you are not using a seperate stand alone dac?

It's a really nice product, enjoy!

I have a Pioneer DVD player that will rip songs from a CD and store them on a USB stick plugged into the front of the DVD player. You can also connect an external hard drive to it if you wish. No PC is needed.

It will rip the entire CD and put the songs in a folder on the USB stick or you can just select certain songs on a CD and store them in a folder. Once you have your songs ripped to the USB stick you can use the DVD remote to bring a list of the folders up on the TV screen. Then you select a folder (album) or individual song for playback. Besides not needing a TV turned on, [I usually turn it off after the music starts playing], would there be other advantages to the Squeezebox?

Usually those songs are in MP3 format, so yes, a SB will outperform that scenario. Providing you use a lossless format, nothing makes MP3's sound good. Maybe better....but not good.

As far as I know you need to rescan when you add new music. Now that might have changed as I am not running the current software release yet, but I doubt it. It doesn't take long at all.

You are correct. It does save the songs as MP3s. You can select the compression but, like you say, they are still MP3s. Obviously I know very little about the SB. I assumed the songs played by the SB were MP3s. What format is used for the SB?

A good trick to needing to avoid rescanning is navigate to the new music within SqueezeCenter directly by browsing from Music Folder. As soon as you navigate to the new tunes they get added to the database without scanning.

is the first scan though supposed to take awhile? i'm trying to run the qpkg for my qnap NAS but it seems to be taking forever. i'd like for it to work there if possible so i don't always have to have logitech media server always running in the background.

First scan takes a long time, it's building the database from scratch.

    x2......

It should work on the Qnap then the processing will be there and not on your computer. You can then shut down your computer when not in use and still fully run your SQB from the Qnap.

Did you have the error correction on ? Usually with it off it rips faster, with it on takes a tad longer.

Well it's been decided. I told the girlfriend that I am selling the HTPC for purchase of a Squeezebox and Universal player. She has given the green light. Now I just need this to sell locally so I can place my orders.

Too bad you couldn't have been there. Rob and even your brother was pretty excited about the upgraded sound, I thought he was going to explode. Not use to see him get so excited about gear. It was a huge upgrade, it even surprised me with his modest phono stage.

Just curious, when you rescan for added music with Logitech Media Server, does your latest additions show up under New Music? I have to clear and rescan for the new stuff to show up. I may have done something with soundcheck's Touch Toolbox changes, can't recall.

Navigating manually to the new music you want to add is much, much faster than a scan. If you know where the files are (presumably you do because you just put them somewhere) then it's going to take you no time to add the cd to the database.

As for the question about new music - Another scan does not clear out your new music. You'll see a list of everything that's been added going backwards in time. It's not just new music as in music from the most recent scan.

Not to argue...I'm sure that's a perfectly fine way to do it....but 'much, much faster'?
Click on the media server tray icon, click open control panel and on that same page select 'look for new and changed media files' (already there as default if you've used it before) and click 'Scan. So basically 3 mouse clicks. Can't get much faster than that.

Yes, but then you need to wait for the scan to finish, which can take a while with a large library. If you just navigate to the new music via the music folder, it gets added to the database instantly.

But you're just scanning for new music. I just did it and it took around 15 seconds. My library is over 300 CD's. I guess if you had thousands it might take 60-90 secs, but then again if you had that many it might take that long to open the interface and browse for the new music....especially if there was more than one new CD.

Depends on the size of your music collection. Also, my music is on a nas and the server is on a pc, so scans across the network take longer.
