FYI the same exact amp but in PPI's casing was just $203 shipped form Sonix not too long ago.

And that's another thing - Polk charges $100 more for the same item as PPI sells lol. I know PPI went to crap after DEI bought it but realisticly nowadays Polk isn't "high end" either. In this case paying msrp of over $100 more goes for nothing more then a name. Just saying....

That makes me want to puke. PPI used to be car audio royalty and mow theyre a budget brand.

Thats evolution I suppose. The small companies like PPI, Polk, Orion and the like are around at first and dedicated to audiophile quality. Then a big company gobbles them up and is only interested in mainstream audio. Its just sad that you have to turn to raw home audio drivers like Scanspeak or Seas to get high end speakers these days. Morel and Focal are probably the last elite car audio brands left.

Well not necessarily. There's still plenty of good gear out there. The $300 price point is the sweet spot and there are tons of really good speakers around. Amps and subs are still at a high level because while most people aren't willing to shell out a grand for speakers, there are still a lot that'll shell out that much for amps and subs are what everybody that doesn't care about audio wants so there's plenty of demand there.

I don't mean to paint Polk as a "budget" brand cause theyre not. Their first run of PA amps (500.4, 250.2, 1200.1, etc) are very strong amp. I don't have any experience with the new D series but I don't see why they would be any worse.

I'm still running my PA's in my competition system so they're more than capable.

So while it is a dark time for high end speakers, there is still plenty of very good car audio gear out there.

While I agree with on on PA500.4, 200.4... I really believe 660,880,330s to be cheaply built budget amps (Hello DEI??)

I've played around with a few in Best Buy and while they are somewhat similar to older PAs they just feel cheap.

Then specs really aren't clear either. One model doesn't list Ohms, other doesn't list if wattage is rms or max... while most of these things are easy to "catch up to" by many people that have experience with amps and specs I expect them to be clearly listed for me and anyone else thinking of buying it. It's like they didn't have any quality control over what specs are to be listed. Or was it maybe done on purpose to get away with real specs and go "Sony way" of posting only MAX wattage numbers pretending this amp to be more powerful then it really is??

Look up pricing on PA660, 330 and 880 - don't they alone tell you how cheap those amps are?? I know Ebay isn't "official retail" but you can easily get new 660 for under $100 there. EASY, no auctions or waiting for the right moment.

I'm also curious why Crutchfield stopped selling Polk's amps. They sold momos and older PAs but not 660,880,330s and not new class Ds either. This might not have anything to do with quality of amps as Crutchfileld also sells their "cheap house brands" but I would still like to know why they stopped.

Hmmm, I was actually going to go to Best Buy today and pick up a 330 to replace my dead 250.2. I haven't heard anything much about them but figured they'd work for a tweeter amp.

I think Ill still pick one up. Its for my tweeters and it's $150 and I want to stay team Polk as much as I can. Ill have a little faith that it'll be good. Polk hasn't let me down yet.......except for that piece of crap refurbished 250.2. But that doesn't count cause it wasn't BNIB.

I wouldnt. Thats where I got my PA250.2 and it was junk right out of the box. As a general rule I dont buy anything thats refurbished but I tried this one time because the prices were so good. Never again.

You're the only one I've ever heard of complain about the quality or condition of a product from Polk's eBay store. Sorry you had a problem, but you are clearly the exception and not the rule. Ipartywhenuhurt, I would recommend buying from their eBay store if the price is good.

It was DOA and I bought it off the Polk Direct site. I'm not saying Polk was trying to rip me off, I'm saying I don't like buying ANYTHING refurbished from ANY manufacturer. Especially when they don't accept returns or exchanges like Polk Direct. If your amp is DOA, instead of swapping it out for another one, you have to go thru the repair process which can be quite lenghty.

Again, I'm not accusing anybody of anything shady, especially Polk. I trust them completely and have been buying from them for years with nothing but great satisfaction. These terms are clearly spelled out on their page so I knew what I was in for. Odds are you'll get a good one. I just don't like to take a chance on refurbs and these are the problems you can run into when buying refurbs from any manufacturer. If you know that if you get a DOA amp that you'll have to send it off for repairs for a few weeks and are cool with that, then by all means go for it.

All the wires are run - I had my car apart at 1am and the neighbors probably think I'm crazy, but now everything is hidden nicely. I have to modify the bracket, but it's actually going to fit perfectly in the little hidden compartment where the factory amp was.

Tomorrow I'm getting the harness for the HU, and then all I have to do is wire that up, slide it in, and hook up the battery cable.

Only thing is, like an idiot I only ran a single RCA cable. Running another at this point is kinda gonna be a nightmare, and I'm debating whether I want to bother or not. I wouldn't have subwoofer control I guess, but other than that...

This. Do it right. Itll suck big time for the next few hours while you slave away running that extra set but tomorrow when youre done, youll be glad you did.

yeah I know. It's just so predictable. I always forget one thing. Usually the remote wire, but it was attached to the RCA so I guess I went to the next best thing. Plus I can't find my old one so I have to go out and get one.

Side note - I wired up the harness for the JVC head and went to test it - nothing. I was planning on running the brake bypass at some point so I didn't hook that cable up. Does anyone know if that's simply to play video or if the unit needs it to power on, period?

    Thanks.

    Back to the grind.

I already posted a little about it, but just to reiterate: The amp is up and running, and it is a thing of beauty. Small enough to fit into the little pocket where my tiny 40wx4 amp was tucked away. But everything sounds very very good and very clean. JVC DVD head (which I had my doubts but sounds great and has a great interface), 4V front and sub outputs to 4000.4, MM6501s set around half for now and a Rockford 10" sub up around 3/4.

I still have to put the car back together, but everything sounds amazing. Lots and lots of clean power, lots of headroom. The head goes up to 50 but anything above 35 is painful. My only point of reference is an 800W 2 channel Audiobahn amp that previously drove this sub and the 400W going to it now are better in every way. Cleaner, louder, fuller. I always felt like the sub wasn't performing up to its potential, and I guess I was right. Now it actually sounds like a high end sub.

Build quality is great and it's a solid little amp, even with the plasic face. I imagine they did that to save weight, because it's pretty damn light.

Bottom line, I regret nothing. This is a great amp.
