Sony STR 6060. Worth fixing?

I picked up a Sony str-6060 today. It is in really nice cosmetic shape, and has the wood case. I had great hopes, but it is not working. It powers on, lights up, the signal meter works as I move the tuning knob. But no sound out of main or remote speakers. I am not very familiar with this unit and curious if its worth repairing? The wood case is pretty much perfect. I havent ever heard this unit, but I really like its looks.

Short of a bad fuse in it, I think I would pass.

Do you own it or something you thinking about picking up?

Could it be as simple as a fuse? There isnt anything on the outside, but I havent opened it up yet.

no... if a fuse blows, the unit would not power up at all. make sure the tape monitor switches are off. otherwise it has to go in to repair. getting a 30+ year old unit will be difficult without any manuals.

No I think there could be another fuse in the receiver also, which is powering the amp.

Does anyone here know more about this receiver and what fuses it may have that could be replaced?

Thanks Disneyjoe. Anyone have any helpful info? Other than just "Go figure it out yourself".

You really need to be asking these questions and/or doing a thread search over at Audio Karma. This kind of vintage gear is talked about pretty exclusively over there. Not a whole lot of vintage heads here that work on their own gear. We have a few, but Audio Karma is almost completely devoted to vintage type receivers and other mass produced vintage gear.

Thanks for the recommendation, but im not ready to give up on the folks here at the polk forum. I usually post my questions in multiple forums, and I did post this same question on audiokarma earlier. I dont think you are giving your fellow "polkies" much credit there Heiney. Sometimes I get better answers from one forum or the other. Its really just a crapshoot.

I don't recall that piece (STR-6060F is what I had) having an outboard accessible line fuse. It MIGHT have had under the hood speaker fuses, but mine never acted up, so I didn't go poking around. It is a pretty nice sounding 60wpc receiver but not giant-killing, made cool with all the controls behind the little actuator-controlled flip down/up door.

    Aloutah,

Look at the receiver. Usually 4 to 10 small screws hold the metal cover on. These take about five minutes to remove. The metal cover may slide from front to rear to remove. Locate the fuse inside. This should be fairly easy to locate, hold it up to the light to see if the wire inside the fuse is visible and see if it is blown. Buy a similiar fuse for about $1.00, and put it in place. The advice given to you is the best advice you will get anywhere!! It's the logical first step that any electronics repair technician would perform.

I'm not sure what kind of an answer that you were expecting???

I was looking for info from people who have owned them and have experience and knowledge about them. I appreciate you taking the time to write back, but im guessing you dont have either knowledge or experience with them. Basically another "go figure it out yourself" answer. If you dont have experience with or knowledge about this unit, then you cant be of help.

I opened it up last night, the only fuse I could locate was on the underside, but its soldered on. It doesnt look blown though. Its one of those white ones, so even with light its difficult to see the wire inside.

    Brock and F1nut, +1,

I own several vintage receivers, and as a result, I HAD to become a member of AK. Lots of great info over there on all this! The usual advice is to check all fuses first, use DeoxIt on all controls, then check DC offset and move on to tuner "alignment". If any more is needed, get the service manual or find a repair guy!

Good luck. Those early Sonys are nice units and are probably worth a repair as long as you don't sink too much money into them because you'll never recover it!

Apparently he is wanting someone to push a magic button and fix it for him. He's been pretty rude to the folks that are attempting to give him some ideas to fix it!

Open it up and figure it out yourself, from someone with no experience on the unit, is really not giving any help now is it?

I have a soldering iron, thats about it. I would be having a friend do the work for me, so thats really why im trying to see if it is worth fixing before I go down that path. Ive gotten a lot of great responses and PMs from some people at AK actually.

So, you can't even test the fuse and yet you're still asking for help on how to fix it. Hello!

That's great, I suggest you sell it.

lol....So people tell you the first thing to check for is a blown fuse. But you don't like that answer. Then they tell you where to look to get help....and again you don't like that answer either. You act like you don't know about this receiver at first. Now you say it has a "strong following" and folks at AK are asking to buy it from you. Hummmm.....

Well you got a few choices. Open it up and check for a blown fuse. Take it to a tech. Or sell it. But I think what you are really wanting here, is for someone to ask to buy it from you. There is one on ebay now with a BIN of $100. I didn't check for completed listings though.

Whether there is a popped fuse or not... most likely (and this is a SWAG, but not an uninformed SWAG) either a driver or power transistor is shorted.

    BUT...

Chances are the tuner works... and those Sonys had pretty good tuners in 'em. If it's not emitting smoke :-P or getting hot anywhere internally (or, jeepers, externally) take the tuner outputs from the "tape out" jacks and use it as a very good analog stereo FM tuner.

PS (and FWIW) I hate working on soiled state stuff; too complicated, problems can be too subtle, and the components are just too danged touchy.

Im not "acting" like anything. I asked if there were any fuses that could cause the issues im seeing. I was not at home, and could not open it at that moment. So yes, I "didnt like" the answer that disneyjoe gave me, "open it up and look around". It did not address my question and was kind of rude in my opinion. If you dont know the answer, why even post? Especially something that really just says why dont you go find out for yourself. The first time I ever heard of or looked at this receiver was 2 days ago. I posted here and on AK. Before i take it to a friends house who has the equipment and ask a favor for him to check a few things, I wanted to know if it was a potentially easy fix. Last night I opened it up, I assumed the fuse would not be soldered and I could pop it out. This was not the case, and I didnt have a way to test it last night. Since I posted on AK, I have had a few offers to buy the unit. Also quite a few PM's about the unit in general, so that is where I determined it has a strong following. Is that enough explanation to put your curious little mind to rest? Now you HALO, have offered nothing to this thread but your opinions on how rude I am and what my motives may be. If you dont have anything constructive to add, please go crap up someone elses thread. Good Day!
