New Forum Reception and Age

Just curious to see if there is a correlation between the reception of the new forum and age.

BTW, I picked 30 as the cutoff because the internet did not become widespread in people's homes until the late 90's, so people who started to use the internet before adulthood are likely to be 30 or younger. Of course there are exceptions. This isn't effing scientific.

I'm 25 and dont like the new layout. I think if there was just less white space on either side of the page, I'd like it better.

How do I hit post without a mouse? I'm used to tabbing then enter, which no longer works

I read in at least nine different threads from the mods that there is a widescreen layout coming soon.

Alt-S posts without using the mouse. (hold down "ALT", tap "S").
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

    I don't care

On the contrary; the "I don't care" option is inherent to every poll:

Total views - number of responses = number of don't cares

Well I guess that doesn't account for people who voted but have viewed multiple times... damn variables!

    ROTFLMAO!!!! Too funny Mark!

For the record, I'm 50 & like the new forum just fine. There isn't that big of a difference between this one and the old one. Even if there were, I don't have any problem with adapting to the changes.

You yahoos need to remember and be grateful that we HAVE forum. Instead of changing it, they could have shut it down instead.

Don't like it, leave and don't let the door hit you on the way out. The rest of us who have adapted will get along just fine without you.

I can relate to this and the main reason is it is getting harder for me to adapt, I'm dangerously getting close to 56! :(

That too as I care about the forum, not the actual format! Thanks Polk for the freebee opportunity! YOU ROCK!

I'm not voting, my choice isn't there. If this place went back to the archaic format like AA or pilotone or naktalk, I probably wouldn't visit much, but this new one isn't bad. And yeah we're lucky to have a nice FREE forum with lot's of great folks. I even like the 'entertaining' members *wink* (the smileys suck). All in all, I'm staying so whatever happens happens.

Apparently all this poll has proved is...

You can't teach an old dog new tricks.
Generalising Mr. WebMaster? ;) Ah, maybe we deserve it (generally speaking)! Being an old dog my self, I've been patient, positive and eager to learn through the change process (even refrained from commenting during the earliest post as their was no need to put extra stress on your team working extra hard for us Polkies).

I've been trying to familiarize with the new revision at hand and learned a lot in the process. Yesterday, I was curious and decided to use the mobile format and this evening, I did not know how to revert to the default format. I manghe to do so but it gave me a big scare! I'd say old dogs with an attitude will not learn new tricks. You just have to forgive them, their time's done and their ability to learn has suffered greatly, all they are useful to is to keep your feet warm as all they can now do is sleep at your footh. ;) On the other hand, some of the old dogs are still more than willing to please their (web)Master but the ability is simply no longer there or they are simply slower! ;)

I guess i will have to agree to disagree with some of the old timers. I really like the new look and navigation. Yes some UI attributes need to be tweaked (and they will give us time sheesh!) but this forums not functions much more like it should for 2011 rather than being stuck at the beginning of the century. While this may be hard for some people to handle in the end it makes the system a whole lot easier to manage and one that is with the times.

To put things in perspective, I'm using a modest HP w2207h widescreen monitor (16:10 aspect ratio) and I measured 4 inches of whitespace on the left side and 4 1/8 inches of whitespace on the right side. The forum content is being centered within the whitespace.

Others with larger monitors likely have even more whitespace.

Great attitude. Sarcasm here. Am I happy that the forum is up and running yes. Do I have to like it? No Should I be invited to leave if I dont like it? No. Am I willing to wait for things to get tweaked? yes. The point that you and a few others are obviously missing here Cathy is that constructive criticsm is a very useful tool new people coming here will also be turned off by the same things that we older members dislike about the changes too, which means less participation in the forum as a whole. If you cant see a big difference in what this new layout entails you need new glasses.

Several things stand out to me.

    1. Different god awful funky smilies.

    2. Very slow navigation between boards, try using the backspace bar when your typing a message slower than hell.

    3. Some little popup asks me most of the time when I attempt to leave a thread and go to a new one am I sure I want to navigate away? PITA

    4. Hard to distinguish Karma's News etc from regular threads.

    5. Feedback still isnt working even after new layout change.

6.The horrible Red border and pink background quotes are in now.

    7. Many other things I havent mentioned but others have all lead to less enjoyment and less time spent here which means less new threads etc. If it becomes a big enough pain in the butt people will actually leave and new ones wont stay, hopefully Patrick and others will realize that the criticism is actually meant to be helpful not just whining. If I had a business and one of my employees told a customer they can either accept something or leave I would fire them in a heartbeat, I realize this forum is free and not a business per se but that is a real bad attitude to have.

    REGARDS SNOW
Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

I think it partially comes down to color scheme. It's a fact that in some fast food restaurants they use colors such as orange and red because it made people act different by scarfing food down faster, thereby they eat and run and that makes more room for more customers.

I really had to go a long way for that.

Red cars get stopped more by police.

Blues and more contrast in boxes and different contrasts between areas might be better, but I'm not complaining.

Just take it this way, you are in charge of refreshing the house, you've started by warning the family that they had to be patient and yo promise to make the home available again once the ground work was done which promise you kept. Kids and elders got back in and everyone was confused, lost and uneasy since you let us in during construction and simply on the primer coat. Some started to complain without listening when you were telling us wait, don't panic this just the first coat. Then some still complained about no longer having face plates on the AC outlets and switches. Again you try to reassure by pointing out they'll go back on once the final coat of paint is done. Despite the whining and complaining you still carried on patching, painting and refreshing the home and you even asked for feed back in order to do the maximum to please as many as possible. You are still hard at work and delivery promises day by day.

Fact is, refreshing the home becomes a must at some point and you realised that and acting accordingly and this for the welfare of the family. Fact is, in every family there are spoiled kids-braths that will never be pleased and will complain. Fact is, there are also some elders that choose to grow old with anger which typically brings them to claim that the olders days were much better, that they used to do better and that the generation following them can't do it right.

Fact is, complaining and the treath of changes is disturbing and even scary at times for many despite that it is for the greater good. You simply have to realize this, accept people as they are be constructive or else. You just keep doing a great job and you will eventually notice that positive comments will surpass the negative ones. even some of the crusty old timers will eventually accept the new norm and will again be afraid and reluctant of moving away from it. The kids will or may eventually stop the spoiled brath complaining attitude as they grow. Fact is, there will always be complainers and realize this is not related to your work but rather to a behavior they chose to adopt.

Yet you delivered promptly and we all know there is still some tweaking to do. As you have the opportunity to improve things will simply get better and soon the whining will simply be behind as people (kids or elders) will adjust and accept the new norm. So, thanks for what you've done so far and keep up the good work! You've managed to tweak the looks to give it a look close enough to the older one so we wouldn't get lost too much and still feel home. You've also provided for crucial updates to match today's reality. Don't let anyone discourage you and keep up the good work as we all benefit from it including the complainers.

How about a question regarding the icons? The old icons were easy to see, and it was easy to tell the difference between icons. The new ones are hard to see, and they all look the same, except for the afro icon. Of course, at some point, someone will complain about the cultural insensitivity of that icon, but that is another issue.

And nobody has yet explained what the envelopes are for on the thread titles.

We are in the same boat with the eye issue! ;) As far as the envelopes I wish they weren't there but I guess it is part of the upgrade. I asked the question the other day and never got any answers. However, if you look at the bottom of the page search you will notice it provides some answers as each color description is provided.
