Blew my lsi15 tweeter & crossover-how????

I was listening to music at about -28dbs ( Pioneer Elite VSX-23 & Emotiva XPA5) for about 20 minutes, one of my lsi15's sounded differently. Upon inspection found tweeter toasted & crossover torched. Other 3 drivers seem fine. I know I will be calling Polk C.S in the morning, but I am baffled that this happened. I have listened to music this loud before for longer periods of time.....please feel free to chime in so I won't have this issue again in the future. I plan to listen at lower levels, but I thought LSI's could take it.

Had a similar experience with mine. I hit mine with way more power than they were designed for and had smoke pouring out of the port on the front. Polk CS was all over it and replaced the crossovers in record time. I am willing to bet the tweets are fine, as the circuit that melted in mine controlled the tweets and they were just fine after replacing the XO's

It's not always about power. If your amp can't handle it this can happen just as easy if not more so. Be sure your amp is not clipping.

Don't have an answer as to how it happened, but this might be a good time to do the XO upgrade. If you're going to be spending money on new XO's anyway, may as well upgrade. It's a really nice improvement. Just a thought.

This is true. Plus with the upgrade they tend to hold a little more power as well.

There's a 5 watt resistor in the tweeter circuit that is prone to over heating. You most likely hit a transient peak that was just too much for it. It should be replaced with a 10 watt resistor of the same ohm value.

Thanks guys. Emotiva amp never even blinked...AND actually both speakers kept playing, just one sounded muffled suddenly. I tested the tweeter using an old pioneer receiver I have in the garage, but no sound , and it smells fried. The xover was pulled and its fried crispies too. I thought the lsi's were a little tougher than this. Oh well, wonder what this is gonna set me back $$$$$$$

I don't think it will cost much, Lou. By the way I agree with others, you should go for the XO mod, this is quite an opportunity to do so

Not yet, but that will be my next move, soon. I've been doing some research, and it seems to be one of the easier mods.

Can you solder? If it appears you burnt out the resistors in series with your tweeters, pick up a pair of Mills 2.0ohm resistors from Sonic Craft or Parts Express and you should be good to go. If you destroyed a tweeter, you need to replacement from Polk as their made specially for the LSi series.

-28 is not even that loud. If you where at -2 or 0 then I could say yeah you where over driving your speakers but not really.
When I had the LSI15's I had my B&K at reference levels many times and they sounded sweet. No clipping or distortion of any kind. I was very proud of the clarity I got at high volumes. Yes they love to be pushed.
I'm wondering if their is a fault in that resistor? If more then one person had the same problem , maybe a bad run?

Did you have the treble turned up? I have rebuilt over 100 crossovers for Polkies if you want it upgraded. If you are good at soldering fallow face's advice and replace the 5w resistor with a 12 watter.
    Ben

Edit: If you have a multi meter check the ohms of just the tweeter out of the cabinet.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

I've almost always played my LSi15's at my Denon AVR-4810ci's reference level, so I don't think the issue was playing them loud at all.

Yeah man, I would never get anyone near -2 dbs. I dont even dip into the low -20's. The 15's get too loud for me at those levels. F1 & Ben, I will heed the warning and replace those to 12watts. Ben I will pm you as I have never soldered, but Im not afraid to try either.....

So LSi15th crossover attached to the binding post plate? Interesting. Who does the XO Mods for the Polks? Anyway, I play my LSi15 at -25 to - 20db all the time - and they never have a problem, nor do they become obnoxiously loud at that volume. Maybe my hearing is shot.

Personally bro, if you are unsure of your soldering capabilities, just send the crossover out to someone willing to rebuild it for you. You can do more damage to the board if your not carefull.

I hope it was just a bad batch of resistors, and that my Emo amp was not responsible for the damage. (Clipping) When I do fix everything, part of me wants to play music at those same db's to see if it was the amp. Whats wrong with me!

Do you have a DMM? I would check your amp's DC offset: http://www.rock-grotto.co.uk/dcoffset.htm The diagrams show a headphone jack, adjust for your speaker terminals.
