don't forget.. the user is outputing the -28dB from the receiver pre-amp outputs.... The-28dB is relative to the receiver amps, not the external amplifier... If the Emotiva has a high input sensitivity, the amp might be providing more power than he expects.... In that case, he probably is outputting a LOT more power, even to the point of clipping which also can destroy the crossover/tweeters....

True! :eek: Look at it this way, think of connecting a 100 watt amp and a 1,000 watt amp to the same line level signal. The 1,000 watt amp is going to amplify that signal 10 times more than the 100 watt amp. The setting on the receiver/line level signal is the same, but much different loads being presented to the speakers. There are a lot more variables based on the voltage output of the pre amp, sensitivity of the inputs on the amplifier that determine the output level, but this is the basic explanation.

The amp in your Pioneer is capable of 110 watts per channel into 8 ohms in the best case scenario. I am not sure of its 4 ohm capability...
The Emotiva XPA-5 can drive 200 watts per channel into 8 ohms, and 300 watts per channel into 4 ohms. The LSi15 is a 4 ohm speaker. BIG difference in power. Depending on the Voltage output of the Pioneer, you could have been driving the Emotiva into clipping and past the capabilities of the LSi15. I doubt it, but it is certainly possible depending on the cirumstances.
Again, there are many variables, and I don't know the voltage output of the pioneer or the sensitivity of the Emotiva, but it is entirely possible the amp was clipping, or you were overdriving your LSi15...

embrace the horror, you clipped the amp. it happens to the best of us
gotta check your set up and see why that is happening, if your tone controls for bass and treble are jacked up, thats a great place to start. The XPA Emo amps seem to be pretty stout, so I have a sneaky suspicion the problem is somewhere in the receiver.
I pound all of my LSi's with 500 watts per channel, I assure you, overpowering is not a problem is the power and signal is clean.
On that note, do the crossover upgrade. I had Trey do my LSi9's and oh my sweet jesus did it make a difference. In the interests of disclosure, I did go balls to the wall on components though.
did you test the tweeter straight to the amp to see if it works? (do this at VERY low volume)Living Room 2 Channel -

Hi,I have the Elite 74TXVI-S and -28 db is not that loud.I have Monitor 70's and I've played music as loud as -16db,with no problem.
Were you playing cd's and the high-gain light was blinking on the Elite?.....The high-gain can definately fry your speakers.Peter -
The receiver was set-up using the mcacc feature. Using the mic to manually set-up the speakers. BUT when listening to 2 channel audio I have my PIO VSX23thx set on stereo. From there I can choose: Reg. Stereo, FFS Focus, or FFS wide. the Pio also has a stream direct mode and pure direct mode. These last 2 don't sound too good using my ipod.
