Funny and factual thread! I don't drink but did and I find that Pyramid comment great! How else could they have built them...

6 servings a day is probably the national standard for sure!
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

I thought that mead (fermented honey) might have predated beer - you have to make beer (i.e, boil malted barley to make the wort) - cider, mead, and wine can just sort of happen if you leave honey or pressed juice or pressed juice sit around and the little Saccharomyces cerevisiae Yeasty Boys to do their stuff (convert sugar to ethanol plus carbon dioxide).

An aside: 200 years ago in Massachusetts, everyone (men, women, children) drank... hard cider. Water was not necessarily safe to drink - fermented cider was (as long as it tasted OK, it probably was OK). Hard cider is enjoying a resurgence of interest at least in northern New England... our daughter and son-in-law made a batch last fall (partially fueled by apples from our own trees at our property up in NH); it was tasty.

Beer made from honey is called Mead and it's the oldest know alcoholic drink. Pre-dates everything, including wine. Mainly because a very basic form can occur in nature without intervention by people.

Mead is beer. Or at least a type of beer.

    beer
    ?noun
    1. an alcoholic beverage made by brewing and fermentation from cereals, usually malted barley, and flavored with hops and the like for a slightly bitter taste.
    2. any of various beverages, whether alcoholic or not, made from roots, molasses or sugar, yeast, etc.: root beer; ginger beer.
    3. an individual serving of beer; a glass, can, or bottle of beer: We'll have three beers.

The modern traditionally known sense of beer is #1. The original idea behind beer is #2. Also, mead can have additional flavoring ingredients added to the wort to enhance flavor and preservation. Everything from various herbs and spices to hops.

Hops was not originally intended as a flavoring additive. Hops helps preserve and stabilize the brew. The fact that it adds extra flavor is just icing on the cake. Hops is also a member of the same biological family as marijuana.

Knock you on your butt too.

The PA Ren Faire has a honey mead that is about 15% alcohol. Whooo doggy! That'll get you loopy right quick! Especially since it goes down like candy!

Another interesting tidbit - text 315-679-4711 with the name of any beer. It will respond with everything you'd want to know about said beer. It's a site (not sure if that's the proper name for a text destination?) setup by some college kids.

No spamming or anything like that, its a legit deal.

That phone number to text beer names to is associated with

    http://www.brewerydb.com/

Texted "905 Lite" to the phone number and was directed to go to the brewerydb site.
Don't know how extensive their database is if they don't have "905 Lite".

Been on a hard cider kick myself lately. So much more thirst-quenching than beer when you're hot and parched. Favorites are Strongbow and Original Sin. Woodchuck tastes too much like stomach acid so I call it Upchuck...

BTW it's not alcoholic, but if you're adventurous, try some of Fentimans brews. They have a ginger beer that is the real damn thing, a ginger beer. Has a hell of a bite to it, like ginger should. So tasty. http://www.fentimans.com/soft_drinks

Right now it's all about pumpkin beers.
Here is a short list for those who would like a quality brew.
They are in order from best to good.

    1) RiverHorse Imperial Pumpkin Ale - By far the best Pumpkin ale on the planet
    2) Wyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale - very close 2nd as this was my last year favorite , I didn't have the Riverhorse at this time.
3)Saranac Pumpkin ale - sweet spicy and clean. Easy to drink many. Very nice top rated.
    4) America's oldest Pumpkin Ale - this was a shocker as I really enjoyed the organic taste. Some could say this should be number one if your a sissy.
    5) Wolavers Pumpkin ale - slighty carbonated , sweet and holiday spiced , this is a nice all day long brew.
    6) Dogfish Head Pumpkin ale - on the thicker side with a full body , nice combo of sweet and spice.
    7) Smuttynose pumpkin ale - not one of my favorites buy very drinkable. It's #7 for a reason , it's better then Samuel Adams and Blue Moon.

So theres a short list , get out there and pick some up.

Leave your man card at the door! Beer is ALWAYS quenching!

Mantis, Shipyards Pumpkin Ale and Dogfish are excellent selections. There are a couple more in the area but for the life of me i can't remember their names. The problem with them is they are so addictive!
Octoberfest are also really starting to hit the shelves so i will be dabbling in those are well.

If you ever get a spare moment, Dogfish Head's 120 IPA is possibly my favorite beer right now but watch out, it's a bit "bitey":twisted:
