I think his point is, how did we ever get to a point where we needed to help anyone (in Governmental way). Why should the Government be assisting at all? Before Government assistance, your family and friends assisted (usually, unless you were an ****); but some people tend to take advantage of any situation, and will willingly grab up a handout rather than work for it. So how long do we pay for their children? The legacy continues, because the hand outs continue, and then that becomes the new "crutch" or reason why we can't simply stop assisting.

IOW, when do we draw the line? Until people are MADE to feel the consequences of their own poor judgement, things will never change--and we'll remain a welfare state. Hand outs are a cancer on this society; they go against everything this Country was founded on. They make you a "subject" rather than a "citizen", because they own your ****.

4th year of assistance or immediate and final forfeit upon positive drug test while receiving benefits. Works for me.

Wanna know the difference between a guy out there working, and a similar guy sittin on his **** collecting welfare? The working guy accepted the fact that he was going to have to do things he didn't really want to do to reach his goals. The welfare guy "ain't gonna do nothin he don't wanna do."

    That simple.

When was the last time you bought $500 worth of food at the supermarket?

My nephew told me he saw someone do that the other day and paid with food stamps.

Abuse, abuse, abuse. People who really depend on welfare are the ones who should be policing those who abuse it. They should be mad at those who abuse the system, not angry with the government, if by some miracle welfare does get major reforms.

To "aviator"...ugh...never mind. If you can not accept that some folks legitimately need help, I'm not going to try to change your mind. Maybe American soldiers can decide for themselves whether or not Americans no longer need help enjoying their freedom. Maybe they should just all pack it up and come on home because in your eyes, no body needs or deserves help.

You're correct, I'm not changing my mind that someone else's need, thru bad luck, stupidty or what ever obligates me to support them for one split second. Should I choose to engage in some charitable act that is my choice, not yours and not the almighty government's. If you want to help someone I'll not stop you; but, its not your place to force my help to your causes.

As to your comment on American soldiers, if it was to shame or give me pause then that dog doesn't hunt with me. I was Regular Army, 3Bn/21st Inf, 196th LIB, Americal, RVN, 1968/69.

Unfortunately the truly deserving of such help, go down with a-holes that use and abuse the priviledge. I don't know why these programs cannot be better administered, or locked down to where abuse is nearly impossible.

Any program that I might develop would involve a tier system, depending upon the ability of the individual to work---disabilities/handicaps don't cut it, there's a lot of PROUD handicapped people out there pounding the pavement everyday. I'm talking "of working age." If you are of working age and have no children, 18 month maximum. There would be maximum "hands-on" management of every interview you went on, communication with the interviewer to verify that you were "interview ready." Constant requirements to always be actively looking for, and taking the first job offered--no matter what it is--or your benefits end effective immediately.

Fair enough. Let's just agree that we disagree on this and call it a day, shall we? After all, we are free to have different views right? Might as well exercise that right.

First off, thank you for your service. No shame, quite the opposite. I come from a military family with 9 family members that have graduated from West Point Academy. I was just using them to illustrate that soldiers help out folks that can not help themselves, and that we [as taxpayers] pay for that help too. I guess that wasn't a very well put out example. My apologies for that. I hold nothing but the highest honor for those who serve this country.

When someone is needy it is not a given that the government should be liable. I think any government should help the completely down and out in some minimal ways, and I'm willing to pay my part for them to do so. The $$ going out the door today are probably a few percent for the minimal type stuff but the rest is treated as income, not a specific pick me up. So what if you have to sell your 500K house and move to the bad part of town because you can't afford that life style any longer because of an illness or disability. Its not the governments job to make sure you can continue your lifestyle, only to help keep people from dying on the sidewalks.

I say good for the thinkers in Michigan, nothing pisses me off more than standing in front of an overweight couple at the grocery store with 2 carts full of some good eats, stuff I splurge on once in a while, the whole clan is borderline obesse, and once it comes time to pay the bill out comes the food stamp credit card, woosh, paid for as I finally have room to put my little bit of stuff on the conveyor I think to my self thanks to us taxpayers that they can overfeed themselfs and then be a burden on the medical system because of them being over weight, then you run into them in the parking lot and mom puts the half dozen overweight kids into her boyfriends Escalade.

I lived in Germany 14 years after I got out of the military I got a European out and traveled most of Europe for 1 year decided to stay in Deutschland I learned the Language and found work on the economy paid the taxes that were quite stiff, but for good reason health care was universal not as complicated as it is here as only the goverment ran that, it was decent healthcare and the best, was no bougus lawsuits against the system, If you became unemployed over there they gave you unemployment benefits and you had no fear of losing your healthcare, after a couple of months if you had not found employment they sent you to a trade school to learn another profession, after a year or two, or however long you needed to complete your courses successfully they found you a job in that line of business, they have a social system over there that takes care of the unfortunate ones, just not the free loaders. The money this goverment wastes shoud be put to something such as this no free loaders. I served my country and I'am glad I did but look at us as a country and what our soldiers have to go through now to keep this country going down the path it has been going down for quite sometime. Sorry about rambling on.

Been trying to stay out of this but I can't help myself.

For all of you that are saying "wait a minute we need to help those who truly need it because it's the right thing to do" I hear ya but your wasting your breath. This is the same crowd that would do away with ALL entitlements and are of the "sink or swim" mentality who don't really care if you drown just so long as you don't it in there backyard.

Hey I've got an idea let's just kill everyone who gets or will get any kind of entitlement/welfare after all there ALL useless human beings who are a drain on our society and who obviously don't deserve to live anyway. Just think of all the tax money we'll save that can be use for even more tax breaks for the multinational corporations and maybe even have some left over to buy some more $600 billion stealth bombers.

The welfare received by poor people pales in comparison to that received by corporations.

    And the banking system.

If I'm going to have some of my tax dollars "stolen" by a welfare cheat, I'd prefer the single mom with 4 kids over the chauffered suit in a corporate jet.

The welfare mom may be a "drag" on the country, but at least she isn't selling it out for profit.

And if we're going to test welfare recepients for drug use, should there be exemptions by those who lived in areas where drugs were dumped by the CIA for profit ?
    Just a thought.

This discussion wouldn't even be necessary if those who milk the welfare system had some pride and didn't make a career out of abusing it.

I wish there was a way to determine true need versus simply setting criteria like time limits, but I do vomit every time I look at what we pay in taxes, and this is a step in the right direction.

Someone mentioned bombers . . . I'd rather buy bombers and pay salaries to those involved in building them than to give money to shiftless low-lifes who could work but choose to milk the system.
