Seems fair to me:
(for those who may not be able to link, Michigan is capping welfare limits after 4 years)

I see as a way to force people to make a choice in their career path. If your looking for a job in a certain field and comming up empty after a few years, time to change coarse.

Yet they continue to have children too. I dunno, beyond me if you can't support yourself your still going to bear children ?

Jobs that you may be proficient at but have left the state or gone away, are not going to magically reappear. You may not be able to secure a job at anywhere near your last salary, but you'll at least be working if you looked outside your comfort zone. Job creation has to be the number one priority in this nation. Instead it's job killing policies are taking a toll on every state. Kudo's for Michigan, but I'd feel better if I knew they were cutting out some government waste to coinside with this.

Bravo. It's gonna be tough for some, because getting off the **** is hard to do. As I've said before, it's going to get a lot worse for those who "depend" on the country. We're going to hear thousands of sad stories as more and more welfare programs dry-up, but in all honesty--who do these people have to blame? I think you know the answer.

Take note. The money simply isn't going to be there, period. Actions have consequences, and that's nobody's fault but your own.

    Responsibility, natures birth control pill.

I seriously hope the other 49 states are taking notes.
As a side note, 4 years is WAY to long. Cry me a river...

I love the "individuals" who are on welfare but keep reproducing. Get a clue!
If your looking for a job in a certain field and comming up empty after a few years, time to change coarse.
It doesn't get any more educational than this....

Hey - it's about time. One of the few things that Mr Clinton did in eighties was the "welfare to work" program. As I recall, while you drew welfare, you cleaned the parks, operated sweeper machines, collected trash etc. Funny how suddenly those that had to do this type of work magically found better jobs. I'm a firm believer in helping those who need help, however when it goes on for a prolonged periods of time it is no longer help, it becomes detrimental to the person drawing this aid. On top of that, the children grow up thinking this is a normal lifestyle and develop the "no work attitude" it then becomes a culture.

It is touchy--I don't think anyone wants to come off sounding insensitive, but THIS MUST BE DONE. People will never learn to be self-sufficient until they are made to be. When you're born with this "hand-out" mindset, it's especially hard. We need to break the chain.

Quote me on this: In the long run, this recession will be one of the BEST things to happen to this Country.

I'm a huge fan of cutting off welfare...

People need an incentive to get the hell to work. I just don't understand the concept of "free" money. I know it will never happen, but I feel welfare/unemployment should be a work based system. You want a check? Go clean a park/highway, maintain federal buildings, work on urban blight.

As soon as people have to earn a check from the feds, you will see a lot less people lining up with their hands out.

I am with Steve, it must be done for the good of the state. I just hope they all follow. And honestly 4 yrs is a long time.

Is it the right thing for the state? Yes

Is it right for the taxpayer? Yes

Does it suck for those on it? Yes

Is it time for them to try on there own? Yes

Looks like a win, win, win, win to me.

I know a lot of people but I know of no one who is on welfare, personally? And as far as Minnesota leading anything at this point. Well, that's just a matter of what political side of the spectrum you're on. Progressive for one side, and regressive for the other. America the Great Divide? I guess we're just stuck between Scylla and Charybdis. (I wonder if Ms. Bachmann knows that 'reference'?).

I don't want to see the elderly or children suffer, but we have the technology to ensure they wouldn't. Charge cards issued that would only be able to purchase certain food products, items---implemented by way of UPC codes. Then back it up with HUGE fines and/or criminal charges for any establishment allowing people to charge anything not allowed.

I'm not sure I agree totally on this with ya'll, MI is in a real bind and so are the folks living there, There Are No Jobs There, it's easy to play armchair quarterback and say... "Well move somewhere else", it's seldom that easy. I think hard hit states should toughen up the job search verification updates from welfare recipiants. And work on a case by case from that, you no lookie...you no gettie money!!! And don't tell me they don't have time, or are under staffed to do that, they have plenty, I've been in the system and have seen how they work it (government employees at DES).

That'll change soon. After every war there is a big exodus of military--and add to that, once the troops come home, weight standards will start being strictly enforced again. From what I've seen (I'm former Army) there's a lot of soldiers that don't meet weight standards. For civilians: The military "looks the other way" when they need soldiers desperately for wartime missions--as soon as the conflict ends, they start bootin people out.... cold huh?

It's still tough for people looking to get in...

My younger brother (now 21) has been trying to get into the Marines for 2 years... he was nearly in and then they spotted something on his medical record and turned him away...

He had the issue with his record fixed and now it's a huge waiting game for him. It's been his dream to be a Marine since he was 16... He did all the "camps" and volunteer work for them for years and now they have him sitting around waiting for a call because of a bogus issue on a single piece of paper.

He has been keeping busy doing security work and bouncing at night for a club, but I hate to see his dream dry up in front of him...

Not to be contentious, but how about a drug test and morality test for our CEO's? How many are addicted to various substances? How many cheat on their wives? How many deal with inside trader information, etc.?

I've met some of these boys. I often dine with them at our Board of Trustees dinners and 'some' make my flesh crawl! But not all of them.

Yep, you're better off applying to a military subcontractor such as Blackwater, Dyncorp, etc...

I think you should have to pass a Drug Hair test before you recieve a dime of aid, no matter what kind of aid your applying for. Anywhere from Welfare to Student Aid. You want to do drugs and be trash, then be a big boy and live your life on your own dime.

The difference is, they are paying for cheating and drugs with money they earned working, not federal money...
