I think I am trading in my truck...

I am at a crossroads with my truck... the miles are racking up and my overall "need" if you will for a truck is diminishing and at this point I can buy a fuel efficient car, have a car payment and spend the same!

I am thinking the FIESTA in silver or gray... hatchback so if I do need to haul something I can accommodate most things I need to haul - thoughts?

i could never give up having a truck... i need a trunk.
though my truck isn't my only vehicle... the need is always there.

if you think you can live without a truck. go for it.

    I think I need a truck too...

I would be better off at this point trading my truck in and acquiring another truck at some point down the road...

Most people I know always regret getting rid of their trucks and end up buying another down the road.

Cadillac EXT truck is the way to go. If not that, the new Chevrolet Avalanche might be fun.

I always thought I needed my truck too. There are definitely times I say "man I wish I had my truck" but for the most part, the THOUSANDS of dollars in gas (and maintenance, since Dodges are POS's) has been well worth the marginal inconvenience.

    Those Fiestas are nice cars.

I've got a little 93' king cab Nissan that I use to beat around in, but we also have an 07' Pontiac Vibe, great for hauling, and if we can't fit it in the hatch area, we've got the GM crossbars for the rack, strap it down! Nothing can beat a truck though, you'll miss being higher up, and if you DO have 4WD, I think you'll miss that too, although it's really not neccessary in our area.

I'm kind of the same way. I have my car but use my SUV for everything that requires something to be hauled around. Also seeing winter is not always car friendly I would never trade my SUV during those times as otherwise I can't even get to work.

I dunno man, that truck should go 200K without blinking.....and I don't see how you can own a house without having a truck.

If you DO get rid of it...sell it outright. NEVER trade.

If it's a gas thing, you should have half expected that when you first bought it.
I vote you keep the truck or get new one with more efficient engine. You'll be kicking yourself in the **** down the road when it's not around.

The 04-08 line of F150 is not a 200,000 mile truck.

    My 91 F150 was a 200,000 mile truck...

I have seriously regretted trading in my 91... to this day. Absolutely regretted every bit of it.

Outside of your control your 3rd brake light will leak, does not matter what light you use - it will leak. I mean flood gate leak. My back seat is all but ruined because of the flood waters that light lets in.

The interior itself has not held up anywhere like my 91 - the cloth "stains" even if you spill water. Every time it rains - the next day you have to deep clean all your seats to get rid of water spots... The arm rest came detached...

You can be driving down the road and all the sudden your window will fall into the door... $250 bucks - happens at least once every few years...

My truck has 165,000 miles on it. I change the oil every 3,000 miles - all fluids and filters (except oil, 3,000 miles there) are changed every 30,000, the spark plugs are changed every 60,000.

So in other words I baby the **** out of my truck.

The engine and tranny operate fine - the problem is that truck is heavy as balls and the engine is only a 4.6L so everything you do - daily driving to towing is a work out for that thing. You are constantly putting it under a load.

I love my truck outside of all the things mentioned above, but there is no way - the longer I think about it - I would keep it past 200,000 miles - the odd maintenance items here and there will eat you alive as parts are not cheap. Unlike my 91 where parts are 10-15 bucks a pop.

I would rather get rid of it and just get a 1991 F150 again

Honestly my truck started falling apart at 150,000 miles...

Alternator went out, AC broke (still is broke), interior started coming apart...

And oddly the maintenance schedule ends at 150,000 miles too

What about a Mazda3 hatchback? That way you can still fold down the seats and slide some speakers in the back.

I wish I didn't have to have a truck. They are definitely more expensive than a car all the way around, but I just can't sit low anymore. I HATE the feeling of being way down low in a car when I've gotten so used to sitting up high in a truck. I don't feel safe down low. I can't see more than the car in front of me in a car, whereas my truck I can see someone doing something stupid three cars up and be prepared. I have a Nissan Pathfinder (my wife does too) and I think they are one of the most reasonable SUV/trucks out there. They run on a V6, both average 17mpg in the city, yet with a V6 has better pulling power than a V8 F150 I used to have. It will pull just about anything (my boat was 3,000lbs and it pulled it easily), it will hold plenty of storage in the back, and they look good. Okay, done with the commercial.

I hear you Sid....I like basic. Less stuff to dick up. My Dodge is a 1999, basic V6, rubber floor mats etc and I love it. 150K and going strong...I'll never get rid of it.

It comes down to what type of driving do you do most and whether you REALLY need a truck. I owned a pick-up previously and found that I REALLY used its capacity only in a handful of days each year. It was very useful when I needed it, but most of the time when I am commuting to work with it, I was just wasting gas.

FYI....I read yesterday that the Fiesta has become the sales leader in its segment, outselling even the Honda Fit and the Nissan Versa. You may also want to check out those cars as well. I helped my friend move with his 1st generation Honda Fit and I was very impressed that such a small car can swallow a huge bedroom dresser. I imagine the current Fit may be even better. With the Nissan, you may get a good deal on the current model because a completely new Versa is about to be introduced.

when I got the cube, I was feeling the same pain as you....I had a 1991 gmc...was holding strong but little things were going (yours sound worse).

to be honest, I wouldnt have traded it for the cube without the 4500 cash for clunkers I got for the trade.

incidentally, I am getting the itch back. Trucks are more expensive yes....but they last longetr and can take abuse better than cars. there is no ight answer here bud...

I am itching for a truck, but I still have no problem driving the cube.

on the small car front, do not discount the Mazda 2 same platform as the fiesta but 100's of pounds lighter. smaler engine but still peppier and more agile than the fiesta......that fiesta is a damn nice car as well.

We had a work truck that was a '94 Ford F-150 with a 300 straight 6 cylinder. It was used off road quite a bit too. Have to say, that truck held up fairly well over the years til we ended up trading it in at 175,000 miles in 2004. About the only major repairs we had to do were replacing the alternator around 120,000 miles and I think we had to replace the radiator or water pump around 140,00 miles. Only major gripe with that truck was the cab interior problems with broken door handles, window handles, dash rattling, and I think the heater quit working the last year we had it.

When I need a truck I rent a U-Haul pickup, or Home Depot has a rental truck. If I needed a truck everyday then I would buy one. Personally, I prefer small cars for everyday driving.

The 300 straight 6 was probably about the best engine ever made. 1 true weak point - water pumps. Buddy of mine has over 400k miles on his original (never rebuilt) engine.

I have been blown away by how great my c30 has been...

It's a 2008 with 40,000 miles I have only changed the oil 5-6 times, one in cabin filter and one engine filter, and one set of tires... still all the original light bulbs for gods sake!

My old Nissan Maxima @ 40,000 miles...6 MAF sensors, two wheel bearings, 12 oil changes, 5 air filters, three sets of headlights, three sets of tires, two head units, one FULL exhaust system, new suspension, one motor mount, new VIAS system...

Don't even get me started on my old Saab 9-3 vector...
