That's correct AFAIK. I leave it up to you to say if that's a good or a bad thing.

Agreed. I also doubt there is such a thing as a (good) solid ebony violin, but the point is that we're not talking about pure hardwood/softwood cabinet construction. The original point was that difficulties of solid wood are removed when laminating onto plywood. This also gives the required thickness for a roundover while still hiding the plywood endgrain. The roundover is standard these days to reduce cabinet diffraction, and is a pain to veneer. Has anyone here ever tried to veneer over a short-radius roundover?

I had an old Mercedes (1957 220S) that had a radio grille with some incredible compound curves that were veneered. I have applied solid mahogany edges to veneered panels and then made 1.5" radius roundovers or full bullnoses on, it was for Heckler & Koch's corp. offices in N. Va. In answer to your question about sm. radius veneering.....some folks veneer the barrels of pen/pencil sets. Heat, glue pot filled with rabbit flakes and a hammer, you can veneer most anything.

That's impressive. These are things that require real skill. I tend to really just shy away from veneer on irregular surfaces.

    I'd stick with the SL2500.
So, rromeo923, is it SL2500 or RDO-198? And have you re-secured the drivers?

Cool.Since we are already way OT I have a veneering? When veneering a flat panel with two separate pieces what is the best way to hide the seam?Overlap then sand excess flush or is there a better way?

    Thanks Skippy:biggrin:

I always used a "shooting board" set up with a low angle block plane. stack the pieces, true them up in the S'board and then butt them together, then.....if you can find some, stick the seam/joint together with paper tape with the "wet to stick" adhesive on it. (like an envelope has) This tape will sand off with out leaving any residue. Don't s'pose you've got a stroke sander laying around??

I forgot to mention "bookmatching" do you do that? IMO it looks way better than "slipmatching" !

In the first video (from the top of the search list) I didn't quite get the overall strategy (?!?) and I wondered "where's your masking tape, dude?". And in the second video there it was. Second video is simple and makes more sense to me.

It's fun stuff, I used to make up starburst clock faces or inlays for coffee table tops etc. etc. After all these years, I've still got all of my fingers too !

    Ha ha. Too funny.

I wish I could hear all of these awesome designs. Jeff, if you never need help on a project let me know (by help I mean get in your way and watch, maybe touch the soldering gun once in awhile). I'd love to learn

Well, my plan for the next design is to do something a bit crazy, probably a large floorstanding WMTMW (woofer-mid-tweeter-mid-woofer). Something like this:

I had my eye on some hand-made-old-school-high-Qts 8s (good for sealed enclosures) for the woofers, but am now rethinking that. Have to decide soon and get the ball rolling. I'll keep you posted. My wife and daughter will be in Europe until the end of June, so I'll have lots of free time.

I am sticking with the SL2500 and have enjoyed this thread. You guys certainly know more about this stuff than I. I have not re-secured the drivers yet.

I have however bought a turntable and have been listening to some vinyl (Awesome!)

I have been listening to the vinyl with my SDA 1C's so I have not been concerned as much w/ the 10's lately.

O.K. If I understand you, you are keeping the damaged SL2500, not replacing with an undamaged unit (is that correct). If so, be aware that dome perforations/tears have been shown to affect the low-frequecy tweeter response (2kHz-4kHz) by 4dB or more (Bolejko, AES, 2006).

It means that I will not be getting the RDO 198s. I may still replace the 2500

If anyone has a spare let me know.

    TIA

    1. Sorry sport, I've been called a lot of things, troll isn't one of them.
2 & 3. Those are the two things a troll always brings up.
    4. Post a poll, I guarantee you'll win the troll award.

Every time someone brings up a valid counterpoint to your gibberish, you either ignore it or do the side step. Therefore, any attempt at having a discussion with you on a given subject matter is an excerise in futility.

Your behavior has not gone unnoticed by those that matter and the powers that be. With perhaps one exception (audiocr381ve), no one wants you here.

Dude, I respect your knowledge and allegiance to this forum, but just freakin' stop. You and the groupies that gang up on Jeff are honestly just silly. The back and forth between both parties is so ridiculous, but your party seems to be the ones constantly resorting to being cyber-instigators enforcing my belief that wisdom does not come with age.

Like I'd tell my 11 month old, "Shhhhhh, inside voice."

Both parties need to practice some humility. Until we get an octagon to figure out who is actually tougher, can we stop the trash talking?

Oh really? Forgive me, but did I miss the post where you backed up the ridiculous claim that "plywood, laminated or whatever is an extremely poor choice of any part of a speaker cabinet"?

You've never tried to have a discussion with me. Your no-insult limit is about two sentences.

Unless "Those that matter and the powers that be" can't read or are your cousins, I can't see how that's going to be a problem.
