heiney, i love the idea behind those open-air shoes, but I've yet to find any that aren't horribly uncomfortable, and plus my feet end up sweating in them.

I like sandals. I'd go barefoot if it was acceptable, but it isn't, so sandals it is. The idea that "men shouldn't do it" is retarded and is purely made up based on some macho bull and bizarre fashion. If you're so concerned with what is "manly" or "what men shouldn't do," maybe think about the idea that men shouldn't care what other men wear.

Except those toe sandal things. Those are just weird.

    So angry!

I think it's turning me on!

    No...

    ...wait...

    ...yep, it was just gas.

Honestly, I'm not a fan of sandals. People tell me "Oh! you should get a pair! They're awesome!" While that's all fine and dandy, but I'd be chopping toes off left and right wearing sandals like my friends do.

The thing I don't like about sandals is the lack of support. My ankles crack and pop every morning like a bowl of rice krispies. It probably means I'm going to be a cripple in my old age but I find that low-rise sneakers, dress shoes, or any other footwear that doesn't support my ankles actually makes my ankles hurt by the end of the day. So I'm usually wearing mid-rise sneakers (hi-tops are so 1989), hiking boots or what have you. Even at work I have a pair of chukkas which look like typical business casual shoes unless I pull my pant leg up. Then they look like the boots that they are.

And Brock, when I have to go somewhere for casual dining or a bar where shorts are acceptable then sneakers are acceptable as well. Places where sneakers are not acceptable don't typically allow shorts either. So sneakers or hikers are usually what I'm wearing in your "casual dining or bar" scenario.

So true, the last part made me LOL. As for the Fivefingers, very popular out here in Japan. Construction workers wear the 5 finger boots like the Ninja type. They have the socks out here also. As for me I won't wear them, but I got a few nice chuckles out of the responses.

As for me, I'm not a sandal guy at all. If I'm wearing shorts then I'll do a pair of low cut socks and nice pair of sneaks (nice and clean). I should Karma some fivefingers (the originals from Japan). Food for thought.

I've got a pair of Keen sandals very similar to the ones you posted. They're very comfortable...I've worn them on long hikes and outside all weekend long at festivals, and they've never really worn on my feet at all.

I've had the same pair for nearly 3 years now, and they're still holding together quite well. I'm probably going to get myself some new ones soon though, but I'll still be keeping my current ones around too.

Honestly though, I prefer going barefoot. A lot of the time when I go to festivals, my shoes will be in my car all weekend long, and I'll just go barefoot the whole time. I'll never forget the time I was barefoot at a festival last summer though, and stepped on a lit cigarette. That was a LOT of fun...lol

You northern types who are anti-sandal, wouldn't make it through one summer in the south without changing your mind. 6-months+ of 90 degree, high humidity weather.

I wear mine more for active stuff, not going to bars, restaurants, etc. Washing my car-sandals on; to the beach or pool- sandals on; driving up to the store to get some beer-sandals on; fishing by the lake-sandals on.

BTW, this is what I think of when I think of the classic 'sport sandal'.
    Mens-TEVA-Terra-Fl-Terra-Fl-MadangBlue-M6673.jpg

You can wear these in a pool, go on a boat, jump in the water, ride a waverunner, wade in the ocean, walk on the sand, etc., and you never have to worry about taking the sandals off. They can be sprayed off by a hose in seconds and dry out in minutes. They are supportive enough even for my flat **** feet.

Owned most of them, I'd go with the Keens over the Tevas with no looking back. Chacos are bullet proof but do tend to be heavy. The model I have has a Vibram sole much like that of a backpacking boot. Great on hikes where there are water crossings, but not something I'd want to wear every day.

Keens are super comfortable and last forever. Difficult to find a deal on, however. I'd check out sierratradingpost.com before I paid full retail.

Ben, I was thinking the same thing but the Teva's are on sale for 54.99 from 69.99 and the Keen's I like are 99.95..........quite a difference. Not convinced the extra 45.00 is actually worth it but I've never owned Keen's so I don't know.

I just ordered a pair of Columbia Tillie Creek sandals (closeout) for all purpose use from alltrec.com, now I'm looking for something a little nicer looking as well as with good support so I was thinking Teva or Keen.

    I'll check the link.

    Bill,

You watched "Gladiator" more than a few times didn't you?

    George,
I haven't really watched that movie much. 3-4 time max. However, if you look at the various movie still photos that are on the web, I think you'll find that they mostly wear calf-high boot type footwear in that movie.

I really just think you anti-sandal types are just not getting out and doing much with respect to water-sports and outdoor summer activities that involve wet conditions. Sneakers and high top boots are fine until you need to get them wet. Docksiders are fine on the boat, but once you get them wet or get some sand in them, you will have blisters galore; not to mention, the stink to high heaven if you go sockless with them. None of these problems are found with a good set of sport sandals.

Russ, I'm with you on flip-flops. Can't stand to wear them, can't stand to see people wearing them, can't stand hearing people walk in them.

Sounds like you have already made your decision but I know that my in-laws wore Tevas for a long time until they found Keens and now wear them all the time. I have actually gone the Vibram route and wear them all the time. They are very comfortable while making others sometimes feel uncomfortable. I can't wait to hike this summer in Arizona and Colorado with them.

Ever try to mow a lawn in sandals?

Ever get a fish hook caught in a toe?

Ever step on a rusty piece of metal on the beach gettin' to your favorite fishing point?

Hell, camping gets my feet wet all the time. So does canoeing and kayaking.

I do plenty of stuff where my shoes get wet and I have zero problems. Waterproofing boots as well as proper footwear will do just the same if not better than sandals. I also don't wear good shoes when going fishing in case I have to jump in the drink for one reason or another.

But one thing I won't do is wear sandals. They don't protect your feet and doing the summer and watersports activities that I do, my feet would get really messed up if I wore sandals.

    Nope, don't mow in sandals

Nope, been fishing since I was 7 years old and I wear sandals in the summer and never had a hook in my toe or foot.

I'm not near the beach, but the few times I've been, I've never had an issue.

I camp infrequently perhaps 30-40 times in my life mostly in the summer and wear sandals most of the time unless there is heavy under growth.....never an issue.

No, I don't mow the lawn in sandals. That wasn't one of my stated uses. I wouldn't advocate that to anyone.

Also no, no fishing hooks. But really, with all the rest of your body there to catch a hook, what's the difference between catching one on your foot, or on your arm, or on your back?

Honestly, a piece of metal on the beach? These Tevas would protect the bottoms of your feet just as well as any sneaker or shoe this side of serious work boot/hiking boot. Who wears boots to the beach?

Look, its not like I don't wear shoes at all in the summer. I probably still wear them 75% of the time, but there are many times where a sport sandal can't be beat for comfort, ease of removal, use without socks, and the ability to get submerged.

Maybe its not a big deal to sweat it out in the 1 or 2 month long summer up North, but down South, it sucks having feet that feel like they are in a blast furnace for 6 months out of the year. Its better for your feet to get aired out anyway. I lived in Michigan for 25 years. I don't think I ever owned a pair of sandals up there. I probably didn't have any in Georgia for the first year or two. Since then, they have become preferred footwear in the summer.

    Well just aren't you special?

Fishing on a boat that is rolling with the ocean, you can lose your footing pretty quick trying to get a fish off of a line. End up stepping on something or having something slide in to your foot can create a pretty nasty hole in your foot that will just get nastier when the infection sets in. A friend of mine wears sandals all the time on the boat and we tell him not to and he doesn't listen. He got a fishhook caught in a toe and the infection was so bad, he was this >< close to having amputated. Another time, he actually broke a toe when the boat too a bad roll on a rogue wave and dropped a crab pot on the bridge of his foot. Yeah, I'll keep my steel toed hikers instead.

I'm not talking about a beach where kids are playing in the sand and some parks service clears the beach regularly of foreign matter that could be dangerous. The beach I hit is called Graveling Point and it's on the bank of the mouth of a river. The stuff you find out there just poking out of the rocks will slice right through a sandal or stab you from an odd angle. That and the uneven terrain can tweak an ankle pretty quickly with just one bad step. A boot is more likely to keep you from rolling an ankle where as a sandal offers no protection at all.

As far as camping, define camping. 'Cause camping to me is a tent in the woods. No trailers with running water and bathroom facilities. Besides, dunno about where you are but here in NJ and eastern PA, Lyme disease is a very real threat and sandals in the woods is a good way to go gettin' yourself pretty freaking sick.

I go fishing at least 15 times a season if I can. I haven't had much time to go camping in the past 2-3 years because of work and availability of friends' schedules but prior to that I have over 3,000 days and nights camping since I was about 10 years old. I also mow 2 yards now but that means I'm running a mower, weed whacker and edged at least once a week. Sandals don't cut it for me. Maybe they cut it for you, that's great. But with the kinda stuff I do, I can't trust sandals. I'm not knocking your or anyone else but all you "pro-sandal" guys seem to have your panties in a bunch because us "anti-sandal" guys aren't convinced/swayed from our opinions.

If I had personal experience/advice to offer on sandals, I would. But all I have is personal experience/advice against them. I'm not even bagging on them. Just sayin' they don't work for me and all you "pro-sandal" guys seem to keep challenging that and/or trying to convince me to come to the dark side.

Lighten up. They're just sandals. Even if George thinks they're a bit fruity.
