It just snows now. It's all it does. All winter long snow snow snow. And it's not like a whole lot of snow , it's s@#$$y messy snow.

I'm so over the winter , I just want to move somewhere where it's warm. In the cold your joints hurt , your uncomfortable outside , you have to warm your car up , shovel snow , watch everyone else drive like it's the first time in snow , wear heavy clothes and boots.

Yeah winter just sucks.

    Awwwww. Poor guy.

Just take some Advil, put on those heavy clothes, shovel your way out of your house, and throw slush-balls at unsuspecting strangers! That aught to cheer you up.

Don't forget to post pix to so we can all enjoy!

Yeah, they consider that 'assault on an officer' now, and especially if you're not a 14-year old, they're not gonna be too casual about it.

Snow? In winter? Whoda thunk?!

What I find fascinating is that people in the Greater Philadelphia area wring their hands in stress at the thought of snow. They act like this has never happened here before. But all through the 90's and early 2000's, we had it easy. Had one or two major storms in about 15 years. When I was growing up in the 70's and 80's, we got hammered like this all the time! I was used to having at least a week worth of days off for snow when I was in grade school.

Then, for years, drought-like conditions and no snow but biting cold. Now that it's back to normal weather patterns, everybody flips out and screams about going to warmer climates.

I love the snow! I don't mind driving in it. I don't mind bundling up to go outside. I've even gone camping in the snow! I shoveled driveways for years and got tired of it so I got a snow thrower and it's actually fun to clear snow again! My joints don't hurt in the cold either. Only two things I dislike about the snow. Other people driving in it and the mess it makes on the floors and carpets. Other wise...YAY SNOW!!!!!:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

You wanna try it? Be my guest. I didn't say it was reasonable, I just know the kind of "zero tolerance" bull they try to pull with everything nowadays, and you can bet if you caught a cop on a bad day, they could charge you with a whole slew of nonsense.

Lol, growing up in Iowa, I miss all the snow. Used to work for a small city, and loved going in at midnight and plowing until 6 pm that day, loved the OT! I'm in Boone, NC right now, wen't into a shop, came out 45 minutes or so later, and it had dumped 2 inches! Stopped now. Back to work.

....one great thing about SNOWY days is the "QUIET" it brings to the city. I love the sounds of a blizzard. Walking outside in the snow making virgin foot prints and hearing the slight howl of the wind whipping the snow. The streets are empty and few traffic sounds. Then to come inside for some hot chocolate and some nice MUSIC. Switching slowly over to Vino and Brandy.....relaxing and enjoying a break in normal activity. Then ,when the sun sets , switching on that big screen and watching all those movies you never get time for.

...Enjoy the GOOD that life has to offer.

...Here in DC, we have managed to miss the last 2 snow events. We are just getting the cold weather.....NOW, that sucks. Hope this one hits as predicted. 4 to 8" s.

I LOVE the snow when I don't have to go anywhere.
I HATE the snow when I have to drudge out onto the roads with the rest of the idiot drivers. Just because you can drive safely on the roads, doesn't mean you won't get clobbered by somebody else.

Like today--all I hear on the scanner is accident after accident after accident. And I still have to go to work to get my laptop so I can finish work for a deadline on Friday morning. I am not looking forward to heading out there. Any other day, I'd be staying home clearing my driveway and playing with my kids. Another thing I can't stand is snowblowing when its windy--talk about a futile and miserable effort.

    I already do.

Then again, I did take the Lightning off the road last October. That probably had alot to do with it.

And for the record, I like winter with cold and snow. That's how it's supposed to be.

They could open ski resorts in the parking lots of all the big department stores around me. The snow piles look like mountains, taller than the dept stores themselves lol.

I always thought that it would be a real cool job....one year a guy was driving a construction duty plow pushing snow to clear a parking lot--He would go real fast and ram the snow into the mountain of snow---he really looked like he was having loads of fun, like a kid again.

He was having so much fun because he knew the size of the check he'd be getting when the winter was over. My neighbor, every winter pulls in 50K from JUST plowing. But you have to be able to work long shifts for days on end to pull coin like that. I'll pass.

No, it's not. Well, maybe at first but it wears thin quickly.

Most guys driving plows are in medium or light duty trucks and they can struggle in heavy snow falls. Whenever I filled in for a friend who did snow removal with his lawn service in the off-season, I got stuck with a clapped out Ford or Dodge pickup or stakebed. It was tiring and I used to wear a neck brace like they wear in monster trucks because those impacts shake everything and can really throw you around.

The big trucks can be more fun (18,000 pounds and up) but they are much more laborious to drive and you can get tired very quick if you have to muscle one of them around in a tight space. I know a 4 axle (3 axles, 1 drop axle) Mack dump truck with a plow and a bed full of sand can be brutal on drive and equipment. I've had to go out to mall parking lots or like a FedEx depot lot in the middle of the night to repair broken U-joints and blown brake adjusters on plow trucks and it flat out sucks.

I've never driven anything like a front end loader for snow removal though but I'm told that they are boring as hell. Even though they have the big bucket, it's like driving a gigantic snow thrower. You can only do a thin line and you have to go through the lot like you're mowing a lawn. It's tedious and time consuming. Especially since it's hard to make a turn with the bucket down on the ground. Not like a plow at all. It also beats up the equipment.

The paving company I used to do service work for had BIG equipment like that and had contracts with businesses with large lots to clear. I used to think it would be cool too. But one guy I knew who would be stuck in a front end loader said that if the snow started at around, say, 5pm and was supposed to go until 9 am the next morning, they would drop him off at like 8 pm with his front end loader. He'd have to have coffee and food with him. He wouldn't see anyone until about midnight when the fuel truck would come by to fill the loader's tank. Then he would get picked up when the snow stopped in the morning. He'd start at one end of the lot and go like a lawn mower, line after line. What sucked the most about it was it could take him 3 hours to do the whole lot and when he got done, the snowfall had accumulated enough on the rows he cleared first that he'd have to start all over again.

He said it was fun building the huge piles and shoving the snow all kinds of places but after the first time through, it's old and you just want to be home and in bed.

Plowing is cold, miserable work and there's a reason they get paid well to do it. The work sucks but somebody has to do it. If you're willing and able to do it, you can make a mint. I used to make between $1,000 and $2,000 in a night starting around 9pm and going to Noon the next day depending on how many lots I could get to. I'd call out of work and still get paid for the sick time or vacation time on top of it. If I could go home, get some sleep and head back out later on that night, I could literally make a month's pay at my regular job in less than 24 hours plowing snow.

I can't find any good sites that conveniently list amount of snowfall by year, but I'm just curious if we really got "more snow when we were kids" or if it just seemed that way cuz, well, we were kids, and it was a long time ago.

You guys complain too much. It's ONLY January for God's sake! Up here under Canada, we consider this the BEGINNING of WINTER...not the END. We won't see that till April--if things go WELL. And if they don't we'll just have a cold, sloppy, rainy/icy period before we SKIP spring and go directly to Summer.

I will admit that I am no fan of Winter. Mostly because I'm not a KID anymore and the CITY doesn't plow my sidewalks regularly--which THEY are responsible for?

Oh well. We're getting some snow tonight...a few inches. Not even WORTH mentioning in Maine! Class tomorrow for sure!
