Best rock album of the nineties?

Subjective? Yes. Often brought-up? Of course. Nonetheless interesting? Naturally.

Been listening to Soundarden's 'Badmotorfinger' tonight ... and it occured to me that this may be the best 'legit' rock album of the that decade. I won't go into detail, because I'm wasted on wine, but if you've got a better rock album from that decade bring it on!

    So, wasted on wine eh?

Sitting there like uninvited company? Wallowing in your own obscenity? Sharing a cigarette with negativity? Sitting there like wet ashes with X's in your eyes, and drawing flies?

I agree, Badmotorfinger is a GREAT album. I actually have been spending a bit of time with it recently too.

Off the top, staying on the Seattle theme, I'll go for the highly polished and well recorded 'Nevermind' from Nirvana.

It's 3am here, to be continued....

Edit: actually it's 4:14, Tour can chalk one up for the graveyard shift on my timecard.

    Cheers,

Yeah, when they re-mastered and re-released a couple of Hendrix albums, the 90's had rock.

Ok, sorry, but Nirvana was MTV's little **** pick of the year once and then all the POSER grunge kids MADE that album 'great'. Man...Nirvana didn't start ****. It was bands like Mudhoney, the Meat Puppets, Pixies, TAD, Swallow, Skin Yard, The Fastbacks....

The list could go on and on. Many of the aforementioned bands were also far better than Nirvana was...and thats not even subjective. The difference is that they weren't plucked from Seattle by the suits and stuck in a ballroom in Hollywood to record a video called Nevermind.

Go back and listen to Bleach and then Nevermind and tell me that their sound didn't change to the soup-de-jour of the moment. Many people believe that was the source of Kurt's suicide.

Sorry to go off on the tangent on Nirvana. I don't mean to undermine them as a band, but so many people have no scope on music beyond whats surfaced on the radio. There is so much more out there. I remember making a post awhile back with a list of great bands some of you should check out. I haven't heard a damn thing from any of you about it. Are you interested in trying out new music or not? I think a lot of you are going to find how much has really been lost in the mix out there. It's pretty sad.

In conclusion...There is no definitive album of any era. Everything is subjective and every band has influences from plethoras of others. Nirvana...great band, but they didn't start jack ****. It's all the bands in the Seattle area that started it all together.

    Demiurge,

Zoinks, that was quite the 'buzz kill' of a post ... glad I'm just now reading it today, because had I read it last night I may have gone the way of the Cobain. I love the Pixies, though.

Russ, thanks for playing along, I was only trying to have some fun and you were game. Favorite tune from Nevermind is Lounge Act, FWIW.

A great album would have some definative signs of starting a revolution in music. Indeed after Nirvana came out the 'grunge' scene exploded. Like I said....the 'revolution' in MUSIC (not style) wasn't started because Nirvana released Nevermind. Nirvana was just one of many bands, and they were about the biggest sham music has seen as far as being overrated.

They sure sound good to my ears, and my rigs. That, in and of itself, is enough for me.

Wonder why I never heard of anything you listed, maybe the eels? Did Disney produce Nirvana? How dare they actually sound good. ;)

Agreed Russ. Nobody said there was anything wrong with Nirvana....I was just addressing something thats been bothering me a lot.

Try some of the other bands I listed. They'll sound great on your rigs.

**hmm you edited before I replied & refreshed the page**

I really love Nirvana...I was still commenting on how overrated they are though and how much good stuff has been unrecognized and has had as much if not more to do with the evolution of music with better and more creative stuff than them.

And no, Nirvana was on Sub-Pop in the beggining ( A great record company) and then on Geffen (of which Weezer is on. A band I toured with last year).

Ok, i'm not big on hard 90's rock. I like the Chilli Peppers and that's about it.. well then Sheryl Crow is good too. So is Melissa Ethridge...
i'm more of the 70's and 80's hard rock myself. But, the CD that comes to mind for me in the late 90s has to be Supernatural by Santana. (# Original Release Date: June 15, 1999)

That dude can play like no one else.

ok, continue on as you were. :)

You might consider not trying so hard to live up to your name.

    L&C,
Not a big 90's RnR fan, but I am very fond of Portishead's Dummy.

No apology necessary, Demi... Passion is cool when it involves rather than excludes others, and including is pretty much where you ended up.
So if you had to pick one... what would it be?

Kind of surprised Dream Theater hasn't gotten a nod here. Ave and Sid were pretty fond of Scenes from a Memory back in the RnR Rem threads...

    Another vote for Nevermind.

Some others that come to mind -

Pearl Jam's "Ten" - still a great album. Unfortunately I think everything they have made since has been a snore-fest.

    Smashing Pumpkins - "Siamese Dream"

    Foo Fighters - 1st album

Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction (if metal can count)

Hey Demiurge - You say you toured with Weezer last year - what did you do on the tour? I caught one of the shows in Raleigh NC.
Weezer's first album would be another I would consider for the above list.

I was going to vote for scenes Tour2, but I thought it came out in 2000. Maybe I am wrong though.

As for the nineties though, I would still say Images and Words by DT was break through in many aspects for the small and limited progrock scene.

I would also nominate/recommend Porcupine Tree's- Stars Die: The Delerium Years '91-'97 although it was released in 2002, it does cover their work from the early 90's to the late 90's. Excellent two disk cd.

    (DT:Scene's from a Memory released October 26, 1999 :) )

    Woody,

PJ's Ten is a good nomination.

As for Smashing Pumpkins......good call on Siamese Twins. That cd just plain rocks.

I would also say the Weezer's blue album was fantastic. I still love their video to Buddy Holly. That is one of the best music video's I have ever seen.

I toured with them a bit July 9th - 14th just as a fan. I've been involved with Weezer as a fan for a long time. I used to moderate their message board and other crap like that. I've kinda developed a friendship/aquaintence with the band so they we really kind and hooked me up with free tickets and BSP's. I still do run a Weezer board now, closed to the public, with fans Rivers, Scott, and Karl (Photo Guy/Best Friend/DVD Designer, EVERYTHING!) are all active members. I don't know....it's just one of the best kinships I could ask for. I get to see one of my favorite bands up close and personal whenever they are around.

Weezer is just a band thats really special to me. I guess I'm your source for all things Weezer around here if nothing else.... :p

They are currently working on their 5th album that should be due out around Christmastime or a little while after. Rivers has had to do some MAJOR soul searching due to the fact that Maladroit was such a **** album. I know some may like it, but as you can tell, I'm pretty anal about music, and so are a lot of the Weezer fans. Rivers has to do something magnificent, and I can tell you now that it's looking good. I've got about 25 songs that Rivers had originally recorded for the 5th album, but later he told me he scrapped them.

I personally think that was a wise decision. Since that time he's hired Rick Rubin, 2 of the other guys went off to do side projects...while Rivers & Scott worked on the album. They've been doing a lot of work with acoustics, and I got some pics I can share with you of it:

    20030723weez01big.jpg

    20030729weez01big.jpg

    20030731rec02big.jpg

    20030803rec01big.jpg

    20030803rec03big.jpg

I'm not sure whether or not that is Album 5 recording OR recording for the SPECIAL EDITION BLUE ALBUM coming out later this fall. Some of the information has been kept tight on that, and I haven't heard from Rivers in awhile. My main contact has been Karl and he's not saying too much either.

Anyhow....If you're a Weezer fan there is reason to be happy.

Actually, I'm sorry for my first comment. I often say things I should only be thinking. I'm blunt like that. I get it from my dad...

Anyhow...Weezer's - Blue Album has the most meaning for me.

They didn't spark any revolutions IMO, but they have definatly influenced all the bands I mentioned above and have even influenced a lot of the **** OVERPRODUCED bubble-gum pop out there today.

    ***SIDE NOTE***

It's EFFIN' impressive some of the music you guys ARE nominating. Some of the stuff is OBVIOUS...

but when I see things like:

    Portishead
    Radiohead
    Mad Season

it makes me happy. not that anyone cares!

    Hey Demiurge,

Thanks for all of the way cool Weezie info and photos! Glad to hear they are working on the 5th album. I'm pretty jealous that you get to hang out with those guys...seems like they would be really cool (of course in kind of a geeky way).

I really like about 3 cuts from Maladroit...just cause they are heavier than most other Weezer stuff. The blue album will probably always be my favorite Weezer release, but I doubt that the new one will dissapoint.
