I'm really glad that they don't take that stance with the historic buildings in Europe!:biggrin:

You been to Europe lately? Many of the same issues there as here. Many historic structures are crumbling from the lack of maintenence and upkeep. Even many of the tourist sites are deteriorating due to the cost of maintaining.

In most cases, the crucial factor is maintaining the roof, once the roof is compromised, the real decay can/will begin. Even if the whole building renovation can't be funded, they could at least scrape up enough pride/interest/concern/monies to keep the frikkin roof intact!

So a city govt. is going to spend maybe $50-100,000 for a roof for an unoccupied building that may never be used again when they are struggling to provide basic services like law enforcement, schools and infrasturcture with a declining tax base? As a charitable organization are you going to spend money for the roof or to take care of hungry and needy?

Say what you want about pride of your city ect...but it really is about money...whether to save a structure or even try to maintain it.

Even just knocking them down cost money, that they don't have. Would be nice to just knock it all down and plant grass and tree's, something better to look at and takes away a place for the crack heads to hang. But that too costs money.

Gotcha, people in other states should use their tax money to fix roofs in unoccupied buildings in Detroit. From where I sit, thats called waste, something we are trying to eliminate on both local and federal levels.

Hmm, I wasn't going there. I was thinking of a guy that rhymes with Salami and others, though.

"In downtown Detroit, the streets are lined with abandoned hotels and swimming pools, ruined movie houses and schools, all evidence of the motor city's painful decline. The photographs of Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre document what remains of a once-great city – and hint at the wider story of post-industrial America,"

Well, not really. It's a mess. I live in the burbs outside Detroit (West Bloomfield) and head downtown frequently. There's still a fair amount to do. Comerica Park, Ford Field, Joe Louis Arena (Go Wings!) Cobo Hall. Chris Chelios has a popular bar downtown. There's the Hockeytown Cafe and a fair amount of night life and eateries and a nice waterfront.

Is Detroit like Chicago or something? Uh, no! But it's not as bad everywhere as some of the pictures posted here.

Those are some intense images. I heard they are bulldozing some neighborhoods.

Strange to see that in a big city. Some of our smaller communities in California are headed that way...

This wasn't an overnight event and the single biggest impact is population. There is no reason to have services for 6 million people when only 1 million still live there. Government tried to keep it up decades after private firms left. People fled to the suburbs for white collar jobs and those seeking blue collar jobs left the state entirely. Detroit has gotten the publicity lately but this is what is/will happen to all manufacturing towns. Its time to make it into green space and let it be reborn as something entirely new. I'm from Flint(another winner) and still only 45 minutes from Detroit and love it dearly but its time to honor the past with an entirely different future.

I hope someone can help save some of these old art deco buildings. I bet that they will look fantastic if restored. Obviously not every one of these buildings can be saved, but at least try to save some of them.

Many of you have heard of Oakland, California. Most likely from its infamous reputation as a mecca for crime. Ever though the city can't even keep one Gap store in business in its downtown, it has managed to save, and restored, many of its art deco era buildings. For example, the Fox Theater. You may remember this abandoned theater as the hideout for Robert Redford's gang in the movie "Sneakers". However, it has been completely restored to its former glory and it's now serving as a performing venue for many music acts, like the Moody Blues.

Never mind that there're hardly any businesses open near it, the restored Fox Theater has attracted people to Oakland when not much else is happening (other than crime).
