I'm revitalizing the old HT (well, in a couple months, anyway)....so, I'm going to need a sub or two. For those 'in the know' what's the 411 on the current sub lineup.

Discuss.

It all depends on how much you want to spend. I have 2 mp4k's and love them for both music and HT but it's very hard to beat the ID company's right now like Epik,ED,SVS and HSU.

I'm over 2 years out from Installing the DSW and Micro Pro subs. Polk seemed to be getting better with their subs but not as good as Velodyne or others we carried like Martin Logan. So our sales staff started selling them with our Polk systems instead. We also had a few more then we would have liked fail. Not saying they have a high rate but just more then others at that time.

Polk never was known for really good subs. It's hit or miss. Once in a while they hit a home run other times it's a strike out. Their speakers are a few years ahead of their subs and it shows.

Sorry I can't speak for todays offerings. This dates back to OCT of 2008.

Your comments on Polk subwoofers are based on 2008? Why even post? Aside from the PSW1200, Polk subwoofers have historically sucked. The new DSW and MicroPro subwoofers are more than an equal or above Velodyne depending on what hairs we're splitting. Even Velo took a dump on their market share and models for a number of years, complacent if you will. The Digital series is cool but then again, who isn't doing digital drive or room optimization now?

Anyways, get your ears on something new from Polk Dan. The MicroPro is overpriced from my perspective so its not easy to apple it but it's not like the old days anymore.

I'd suggest the DSW Pro 500 to you Troy.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

When I was looking at subs the Polk name was not a forerunner. This was before they came out with their new lines & really stepped up their game. But if I was in the market for a new sub today you can bet Polk would be high on my list. I think it's great that they recoginized their weakness in the sub market & really corrected it with some fantastic subs.

I agree, the new line of subs is really in a different class from earlier Polk subs. My very first sub was a PSW12 (I still have it in a box somewhere). It wasn't terrible but it huffed and chuffed and was really easy to overdrive.

I've heard the DSW600 and all I can say is that it's pretty comparable to a Velo in its price range and I've always liked Velodyne subs. And it makes the PSW12 look like a sub made of cardboard. It's also tighter cleaner and far more controlled and is more musical than it's predecessor, the PSW505 (which is better than the PSW12 but still has some shortcomings that the 600 doesn't).

I also like the list of subs that Leroy gives above. All good value, good quality. But don't rule the Polk sub out without listening to the newer lines first.

I'm leaning to the DSW pro series....looks to be some serious bang/buck. The microPro LOOKS sweet but don't know if I can justify the price for HT....

The Velo CHT line I've never thought was anything to write home about. SVS would be bitchin'....I've made sweet man-love to Mark's on a couple of occaisions....but I'm looking for something a little less overkill...little smaller.

I know your room, dual DSW500, you are MORE than done. Blackstone all the way around, Ronco it for another 10 years. You would be happy with a single 500 or 600, but I REALLY like the 10 inch (that's what she said). Two of them, one on each side of the room on the main wall, you'll be golden and mess your flat hat.

    Cheers,

I've also been researching subs lately and the DSW Pro 600 is one on my list. But the another sub that's caught my attention is the HSU VTF-15H.

I have a pretty big room (almost 6000 cubic feet); though my listening area is significantly smaller, what I've been reading is you want a sub that will be able to pressurize your whole room.

The only problem with HSU is they're based in California and I'm up in Canada so unless I can find someone up here who already owns it, I can't give it a test listen.

The only negative I've ever heard about the DSW Pro 600 is it wasn't loud enough; though it sounded great. Our local futureshop store only had the 500 and it sounded good.

+10 on what Russ said Troy. My brother has the DSW Pro 500, and it rattles his glass cabinets. I'd hate to think of what damage two of them could do!

I have the DSW Pro 400 and it does great with both music & movies.

That Hsu will do a much better job in your room. Even so, I'd recommend a pair for 6000 cube. Hsu doesn't make a bad sounding sub. They have stellar sound quality with each level of product. You'll just have to trust online reviews for vindication.

I have 2 micropro 3K with my MMG's for 2 channel. Perfect is the best word I can find.

But it's a 10 x 13 room. And if I really push them I need to call my wife and daughter to step on them or they will dance to the music. I know. I need to get me some lead shot bags. I would say this is the only thing I don't like about them.

I tried a single sub (didn't have the pair at the time) in place of my SVS 20-39 PC Plus in the 20 x 25ish Home Theater. It made the couch shake as much as the SVS, granted I had to raise the gain almost to the max, which you would not want to do in a continuous basis. But these little subs are amazing. No distortion, no matter how high you play them, period. They really hit it out the park with that "push forward" or whatever it's called.

Troy, the DSW lineup is like nothing that I have ever heard Polk build before. Polk's reputation for a good sub might have been sub par years ago but todays DSW lineup is nowhere near anything you have heard from Polk before. I like the fact that on the 4K model, the sub will adjust itself to the room acoustics. You will NOT be lacking on the big and low bass punch you are expecting. In fact, I think you'll be very surprised.
